Description

GLUCORYL M1 TABLET by ALKEM LABORATORIES LTD

GLUCORYL M1 Tablet is a combination medication prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It is manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Ltd..

  • Composition Each uncoated bilayered tablet contains Glimepiride IP 1 mg and Metformin Hydrochloride IP 500 mg (in sustained release form).

    • Mechanism of Action: Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, works by stimulating the beta cells in the pancreas to release more insulin, which helps lower blood glucose levels. Metformin, a biguanide, reduces glucose production in the liver, delays glucose absorption from the intestines, and improves the body's sensitivity to insulin. These two active ingredients work synergistically to maintain blood sugar within the target range.
  • Uses GLUCORYL M1 Tablet is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly in patients whose blood sugar levels are not adequately controlled by diet and exercise alone, or by a single antidiabetic medication. It helps regulate blood sugar levels, reduce diabetes complications like kidney damage, eye problems, and nerve issues, and supports overall metabolic balance.

  • Dosage and Administration GLUCORYL M1 Tablet should be taken orally with food, typically once daily, preferably with the first meal of the day or in the evening. It should be swallowed whole with water and not crushed or chewed. Consistency in taking the medication at the same time each day is crucial for its effectiveness. The dosage is determined by a doctor based on individual factors like response to treatment and blood glucose levels. It is important to adhere to the prescribed dose and not exceed it without consulting a doctor.

  • Side Effects

    • Common Side Effects: Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), taste changes or metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, and upper respiratory tract infection. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include sweating, dizziness, headache, irritability, hunger, fast heart rate, and shaking.
    • Serious Side Effects: Lactic acidosis (a rare but serious metabolic complication), inflammation of the liver (which may result in jaundice), and severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, hives, increased sensitivity to sun, inflammation of blood vessels leading to difficulty in breathing, fall in blood pressure, and shock).
  • Precautions

    • Contraindications: GLUCORYL M1 Tablet is contraindicated in patients with allergies to glimepiride, metformin, other sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides. It is also not recommended for individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney or liver failure, heart or lung failure, severe infections, dehydration, shock, or a history of lactic acidosis.
    • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It is contraindicated during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. It should be avoided by nursing mothers as it may pass into breast milk and potentially cause toxicity to the baby.
    • Alcohol Consumption: Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can further reduce blood sugar levels and increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis.
    • General Warnings: Close monitoring of blood sugar levels is essential. Patients should be aware of hypoglycemia symptoms and carry a quick source of sugar. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing conditions, especially kidney or liver problems, heart disease, or circulation issues. It may decrease alertness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
  • Storage Store GLUCORYL M1 Tablet in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. It should be stored at 10°C to 25°C or below 30°C. Keep the medicine out of reach and sight of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about GLUCORYL M1 TABLET by ALKEM LABORATORIES LTD:

What is Glucoryl M1 Tablet used for?

Glucoryl M1 Tablet is primarily used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It helps control high blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient, aiming to improve glycemic control and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications such as kidney damage, eye problems, and nerve issues.

How does Glucoryl M1 Tablet work?

Glucoryl M1 Tablet is a combination medicine containing Glimepiride and Metformin. Glimepiride stimulates the pancreas to produce and release more insulin, which helps lower blood glucose levels. Metformin works by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver, delaying the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin. Together, these actions help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

What is the usual dosage for Glucoryl M1 Tablet?

The usual dosage of Glucoryl M1 Tablet is typically once daily, taken with meals. It is crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding the dose and timing, as it can vary based on your individual blood sugar levels and response to treatment. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed, crushed, or broken.

What are the possible side effects of Glucoryl M1 Tablet?

Common side effects may include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), changes in taste, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, headache, metallic taste, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, and loss of appetite. Less common but serious side effects can include lactic acidosis, severe allergic reactions, and, with long-term use, vitamin B12 deficiency. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is Glucoryl M1 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Glucoryl M1 Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. It is also advised to avoid this medicine while breastfeeding, as it may pass into breast milk and could have adverse effects on the infant. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Can Glucoryl M1 Tablet be taken with other medications?

Glucoryl M1 Tablet can interact with other medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Some medications that may interact include blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, aspirin), beta-blockers (e.g., metoprolol), diuretics (e.g., furosemide), steroids (e.g., prednisone), NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen), and certain cardiovascular, antibiotic, antifungal, or HIV/AIDS medications.

What precautions should be taken while taking Glucoryl M1 Tablet?

Several precautions should be observed:

  • Avoid alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and a serious condition called lactic acidosis.
  • This medicine is not suitable for individuals with Type 1 Diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or severe kidney or liver disease.
  • Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is important.
  • Be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar (e.g., sweating, dizziness, headache) and carry a fast-acting source of sugar, such as candy or fruit juice, to treat it.
  • Since it may decrease alertness, exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems, or if you are scheduled for surgery.

What happens if a dose of Glucoryl M1 Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one, as this can lead to low blood sugar. Missing a dose may result in elevated blood sugar levels.

How should Glucoryl M1 Tablet be stored?

Glucoryl M1 Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. The recommended storage temperature is typically below 30°C or between 10°C to 25°C. Keep the medication out of reach and sight of children and pets.
