Description

BUDECORT 1 MG RESPULES (5 PCS) by CIPLA LTD.

Name

  • Brand Name: BUDECORT 1 MG RESPULES
  • Common Name: Budesonide

Composition

Each 2 ml respule contains Budesonide IP 1 mg as the active ingredient. Other ingredients include disodium edetate, sodium chloride, polysorbate 80, citric acid, sodium citrate, and water for injections.

Uses

BUDECORT Respules contain budesonide, a corticosteroid that works by reducing and preventing swelling and inflammation in the lungs. It is primarily used for:

  • Asthma: Maintenance treatment to reduce airway inflammation, prevent asthma attacks, and improve overall breathing function. It is also used as prophylactic therapy in children aged 12 months to 8 years where other inhaler types are unsatisfactory.
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): To manage symptoms such as breathlessness, chronic cough, and wheezing by reducing airway inflammation and improving lung capacity.
  • Croup: In infants and children where hospitalization is indicated for acute viral upper respiratory tract infection.

Dosage and Administration

BUDECORT Respules are administered via a nebulizer, which turns the medicine into a fine mist for inhalation through a face mask or mouthpiece. The dosage is individualized based on the patient's needs and should be the lowest dose that keeps them symptom-free.

  • Adults (including the elderly and children 12 years and older): Typically 0.5-1 mg twice daily. In very severe cases, the dosage may be increased. For acute exacerbations, daily doses of 4 to 8 mg, divided into 1 to 4 administrations, for no longer than 10 days, may be recommended.
  • Children (3 months to 12 years): Generally 0.25-0.5 mg twice daily. For croup, the usual dose is 2 mg of nebulized budesonide, given as a single administration or two 1 mg doses separated by 30 minutes, repeatable every 12 hours for up to 36 hours or until clinical improvement.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Throat irritation, coughing, and a hoarse voice.
  • Oral fungal infection (thrush), which can be reduced by rinsing the mouth with water after use.
  • Headache, indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, constipation, gas, vomiting, stuffy nose, tiredness/weakness.

Serious side effects can include pneumonia in COPD patients and systemic corticosteroid effects like hypercorticism and adrenal suppression. Paradoxical bronchospasm may occur.

Precautions

  • Infections: Special caution is advised in patients with active or quiescent pulmonary tuberculosis, and in patients with fungal or viral infections in the airways, as Budecort might exacerbate these conditions.
  • Liver Disease: Patients with liver impairment should use with caution, as it may alter the medicine's metabolism and effectiveness.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about other medicines, especially steroid medicines, medicines to treat fungal infections (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole), and HIV medicines (e.g., ritonavir or cobicistat-containing products), as they can affect Budecort's action.
  • Adrenal Function: Patients transferring from systemic corticosteroids should taper slowly and be monitored for signs of adrenal insufficiency.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Other Conditions: Caution is advised in patients with diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, or glaucoma.

Storage

Store BUDECORT Respules below 30°C. Do not freeze. Store in an upright position and in their original carton and foil envelope to protect them from light. Once a foil envelope has been opened, the respules inside should be used within 3 months. An opened single dose unit should be used immediately after opening, and any remaining solution discarded, as it is no longer sterile. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

BUDECORT 1 MG RESPULES (5 PCS) by CIPLA LTD. - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Budecort 1mg Respules used for?

Budecort 1mg Respules are primarily used as a maintenance treatment for asthma and to prevent asthma attacks. It is also used to manage symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) such as breathlessness, chronic cough, and wheezing. Additionally, it is recommended for infants and children aged 3 months to 12 years with croup (acute viral upper respiratory tract infection characterized by a barking cough, noisy breathing, and hoarseness). This medicine is not intended for the rapid relief of acute asthma attacks.

How does Budecort 1mg Respules work?

Budecort 1mg Respules contain Budesonide, which is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid. It works by reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways of the lungs. By inhibiting the release of certain chemical messengers involved in allergic and non-allergic inflammation, Budesonide helps to decrease irritation, reduce mucus production, widen the airways, and make breathing easier.

What is the usual dosage of Budecort 1mg Respules?

The dosage of Budecort Respules is individualized and should be determined by a doctor based on the patient's age, medical condition, and response to treatment. For adults (including the elderly and children 12 years and older), the recommended initial dose for asthma is usually 1-2 mg twice daily, which can be increased in very severe cases. The maintenance dose is typically 0.5-1 mg twice daily. For children aged 3 months to 12 years, the recommended initial dose for asthma is 0.5-1 mg twice daily, with a maintenance dose of 0.25-0.5 mg twice daily. For croup, the usual dose is 2 mg, given as a single administration or as two 1 mg doses separated by 30 minutes, and can be repeated if necessary.

How should Budecort 1mg Respules be used?

Budecort 1mg Respules are for inhalation use only, administered with a nebulizer. To use, detach a respule from the strip, shake it gently, and twist off the wing tab. Squeeze the entire liquid content into the nebulizer cup. Connect the nebulizer mask or mouthpiece and inhale the fine mist. After inhalation, it is important to rinse your mouth with water to minimize the risk of oral fungal infections, and wash facial skin if a face mask was used, to prevent irritation. The nebulizer chamber should be cleaned after every administration.

What are the possible side effects of Budecort 1mg Respules?

Common side effects include a mild sore throat, coughing, a hoarse voice, and oral thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth). Rinsing the mouth with water after use can help reduce the risk of thrush. Other reported side effects may include headache, indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, constipation, gas, vomiting, and a stuffy nose. If you experience severe allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat, or sudden wheezing, seek immediate medical attention. Long-term use may also lead to a risk of bone weakness (osteoporosis) and eye damage (glaucoma or cataracts).

Is Budecort 1mg Respules safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

It is recommended not to use Budecort Respules during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed by your doctor, who will weigh the benefits against potential risks to the fetus. Maintaining adequate asthma treatment during pregnancy is important for both mother and fetus. Budesonide is excreted in breast milk; however, at therapeutic doses of Budecort Respules, no effects on the suckling child are anticipated. It should be used with caution while breastfeeding and only if prescribed by your doctor.

Can Budecort 1mg Respules be taken with other medications?

Inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal remedies, as Budecort Respules can interact with certain medications. Concomitant use with strong inhibitors of the CYP3A4 enzyme, such as antifungal medicines (e.g., ketoconazole and itraconazole) and HIV medicines (e.g., ritonavir or cobicistat-containing products), can increase systemic exposure to budesonide and should generally be avoided or used with caution, requiring careful monitoring. If co-administration is necessary, a sufficient time interval between doses should be considered. Other steroid medicines and certain antibiotics (like Clarithromycin) should also be used cautiously.

What precautions should be taken while using Budecort 1mg Respules?

Special caution is advised for patients with active or quiescent pulmonary tuberculosis, or fungal or viral infections in the airways. Patients with liver problems should use this medicine with caution. Long-term use in children may affect growth, so regular monitoring of height is recommended. If blurred vision or other visual disturbances occur, consult an ophthalmologist. It's also important to note that Budecort will not work for sudden asthma attacks; a fast-acting reliever should be kept on hand. Do not stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor, even if symptoms improve.

What happens if a dose of Budecort 1mg Respules is missed?

If you forget to take a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose as usual. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one, as this may increase the chances of side effects.

How should Budecort 1mg Respules be stored?

Budecort Respules should be stored in their original carton and foil envelope, protected from light and moisture. They should not be stored above 30°C and must not be frozen. Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Once a foil envelope has been opened, the respules inside should be used within 12 hours. Any solution remaining after use should be discarded.
