Description

DROFEM TABLET by FDC LTD

DROFEM TABLET is a fixed-dose combination medication manufactured by FDC LTD, designed to provide comprehensive relief from various pain and spasmodic conditions.

Composition

DROFEM TABLET contains two active ingredients:

  • Drotaverine (80 mg): An antispasmodic agent that helps relax smooth muscles and relieve contractions by reducing calcium reuptake in cells.
  • Mefenamic Acid (250 mg): A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by blocking chemical messengers (prostaglandins) responsible for causing pain and inflammation.

Uses

DROFEM TABLET is primarily used to alleviate pain and discomfort associated with smooth muscle spasms and inflammation. It is prescribed for:

  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) and heavy bleeding during periods (menorrhagia)
  • Muscle pain
  • Migraine headache
  • Functional bowel disorders and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Renal colic pain and ureteric spasms (pain due to kidney or gallstones)
  • Post-operative pain, especially when muscle spasms are present

Dosage and Administration

Take DROFEM TABLET as directed by your doctor. It is generally recommended to swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, preferably with or after food to minimize stomach discomfort. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablet. The dosage and duration will vary based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For conditions like colic, a typical dosage might be one tablet three times daily for 7 days, but always follow your doctor's instructions.

Side Effects

While generally well-tolerated, DROFEM TABLET may cause some side effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, heartburn, constipation, decreased appetite), dry mouth, thirst, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, rashes, and itching.
  • Serious/Less Common Side Effects: Blurred vision, ringing or buzzing in the ears, weight gain, shortness of breath, peeling and blistering of skin, increased heart rate, yellow-colored eyes or skin, bloody and cloudy urine, and excessive tiredness. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not take DROFEM TABLET if you are allergic to Drotaverine, Mefenamic acid, other NSAIDs, or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of severe heart failure, recent heart surgery, bleeding problems (such as stomach or bowel bleeding), peptic ulcers, asthma, porphyria, or severe liver or kidney impairment.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: DROFEM TABLET is generally not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless prescribed by a doctor, as it may affect the fetus or infant.
  • Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medicine as it can increase drowsiness, dizziness, and the risk of stomach bleeding.
  • Driving and Machinery: This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness; therefore, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these symptoms.
  • Children and Elderly: Safety and efficacy have not been established for children. Caution is advised for elderly patients as they may be more prone to side effects.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, heparin), antiplatelet medications (e.g., clopidogrel), corticosteroids (e.g., prednisone, dexamethasone), and immunosuppressants (e.g., cyclosporine), as interactions may occur. Your doctor may monitor kidney and liver function if long-term treatment is necessary.

Storage

Store DROFEM TABLET in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, at a temperature below 30°C. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets.

Frequently Asked Questions

DROFEM TABLET by FDC LTD is a combination medication containing Drotaverine and Mefenamic acid. It is primarily used to relieve various types of pain, especially those associated with muscle spasms and inflammation.

What is DROFEM TABLET used for?

DROFEM TABLET is used to treat abdominal pain, muscle pain, migraine headaches, and functional bowel disorders. It is also effective for dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps), heavy bleeding during periods, renal colic pain (pain from kidney stones), and pain experienced after surgery.

How does DROFEM TABLET work?

DROFEM TABLET combines two active ingredients: Drotaverine and Mefenamic acid. Drotaverine is an antispasmodic that works by reducing calcium reuptake by cells, which helps to relax smooth muscles and relieve contractions. Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that blocks the effect of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause pain and inflammation in the body. Together, these components effectively relieve pain and discomfort.

What is the usual dosage?

The dosage of DROFEM TABLET depends on the specific condition being treated, the severity of symptoms, and individual response to the medicine. It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions regarding the exact dosage and duration. Generally, it's recommended to take the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. One common dosage mentioned is one tablet, taken up to three times daily, for a course duration of seven days, with a strength of 80 mg Drotaverine and 250 mg Mefenamic acid. DROFEM TABLET should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or after food to minimize stomach upset.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects of DROFEM TABLET may include gastrointestinal disturbances, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, thirst, heartburn, rashes, itching, abdominal pain, indigestion, headache, and dizziness. Some individuals may also experience vertigo, insomnia, low blood pressure (hypotension), fast heart rate, sweating, constipation, and changes in blood cell counts. If these side effects persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a doctor. More serious, though rare, side effects can include an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, gastrointestinal bleeding, and kidney problems.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

DROFEM TABLET is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, due to potential risks to the fetus and may have severe side effects. Similarly, it is contraindicated during breastfeeding as its components can pass into breast milk and may cause adverse effects in nursing infants. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding to discuss alternatives or if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Can it be taken with other medications?

DROFEM TABLET can interact with various medications. It should be used with caution or avoided with:

  • Anticoagulants (blood thinners) like warfarin and heparin, as it can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Other pain killers or NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen) due to an increased risk of gastrointestinal issues and bleeding.
  • Antihypertensives (blood pressure medications) such as Aliskiren, Captopril, and Valsartan, as their efficacy may be reduced.
  • Anti-diabetic medicines, as DROFEM TABLET can aggravate their blood-glucose-lowering action.
  • Corticosteroids like prednisone and dexamethasone, which can increase the risk of stomach ulcers.
  • Immunosuppressive agents like cyclosporine and tacrolimus, which may increase the risk of kidney damage.
  • Certain antidepressants (e.g., SSRIs and SNRIs) can increase the risk of bleeding. Always inform your healthcare provider about all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken?

  • Allergies: Do not take DROFEM TABLET if you are allergic to mefenamic acid, drotaverine, or any of its ingredients.
  • Pre-existing Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of asthma, peptic ulcers, porphyria, bleeding problems, severe heart failure, recent heart surgery, or liver or kidney impairment. It is contraindicated in severe kidney or liver disease, and in patients with active bleeding or peptic ulcer disease.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Avoid alcohol while taking DROFEM TABLET, as it can increase drowsiness, dizziness, and the risk of stomach bleeding.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: DROFEM TABLET may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these symptoms.
  • Children: The safety and efficacy of DROFEM TABLET in children have not been established, so it should not be given to them without a doctor's advice.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of DROFEM TABLET, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects.

How should it be stored?

Store DROFEM TABLET in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of sight and reach of children. The ideal temperature for storage is below 30°C.
