Description

CTD-O 12.5/40 Tablet

CTD-O 12.5/40 Tablet is a medication manufactured by IPCA LABORATORIES LTD, primarily used for the management of high blood pressure.

  • Composition

    • Active Ingredients: Each tablet contains Olmesartan Medoxomil 40 mg and Chlorthalidone 12.5 mg.
  • Uses CTD-O 12.5/40 Tablet is prescribed for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It is often used when a single medication is not sufficient to effectively control blood pressure. By lowering blood pressure, it helps to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.

  • Dosage and Administration This medicine should be taken orally, with or without food, as directed by your physician. It is typically taken once daily, preferably at the same time each day for optimal benefit. The first dose might be suggested before bedtime due to potential dizziness. Due to its diuretic component, it is advisable to avoid taking this medicine within four hours of going to bed to prevent frequent urination at night. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.

  • Side Effects

    • Common Side Effects: Dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach, fatigue, increased uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia), upper respiratory tract infection, stomach pain, lack of appetite, indigestion, cough, chills, body pain, joint pain, blurred vision, dry mouth, and increased urination.
    • Serious Side Effects: These may include skin rash or itchiness, painful joints, fast heartbeat, shortness of breath or tightness in the chest, aching, tender or weak muscles not caused by exercise, and swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles. Symptoms indicative of high potassium levels in the blood, such as nausea, diarrhea, muscle weakness, and changes in heart rhythm, should also be reported immediately to a doctor.
  • Precautions

    • Contraindications: CTD-O 12.5/40 Tablet is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to potential harm to the baby. It is also contraindicated in patients with severe kidney problems (e.g., kidney failure, lack of urine, kidney stones), hypersensitivity to its ingredients, low blood pressure, cardiogenic shock, aortic stenosis, or those with urinating problems.
    • Warnings: Caution is advised for patients with a history of asthma, gout, heart conditions (such as heart failure or coronary artery disease), liver or kidney problems, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, alcoholism, or electrolyte imbalances.
    • Drug Interactions: Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can cause excessive drowsiness and enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect. This medicine may interact with lithium-based medications (increasing toxicity risk), NSAIDs (reducing its effect and increasing kidney problem risk), and potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements (increasing the risk of high potassium levels). Grapefruit or grapefruit juice may potentiate the blood pressure-lowering effect.
    • General: May cause drowsiness, dizziness, or light-headedness; patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until they know how the medicine affects them. Regular monitoring of kidney function, parathyroid function, blood pressure, blood electrolytes, and blood sugar levels is important. Do not discontinue the medication abruptly, as this can lead to a sudden rise in blood pressure.
  • Storage Store CTD-O 12.5/40 Tablet at room temperature (below 30°C). Keep the medicine in its original packaging, protected from light and moisture, and out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CTD O 12.5/40 MG used for?

CTD O 12.5/40 MG is primarily used to treat essential hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. By effectively lowering blood pressure, it helps reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.

How does CTD O 12.5/40 MG work?

This medication is a combination of two active ingredients: Olmesartan medoxomil and Chlorthalidone. Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that works by relaxing and widening blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily. Chlorthalidone is a thiazide-like diuretic, or "water pill," which increases the excretion of excess salt and water from the body through urine, thereby reducing overall fluid volume and lowering blood pressure.

What is the usual dosage for CTD O 12.5/40 MG?

The typical dosage is one tablet taken orally once daily. It can be taken with or without food, but it is recommended to take it at a consistent time each day for optimal benefits. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablet. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your condition and response to the medicine.

What are the possible side effects of CTD O 12.5/40 MG?

Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, and increased urination. Some individuals might also experience diarrhea, muscle cramps or weakness, or flu-like symptoms. More serious, but less common, side effects can include electrolyte imbalances (such as high potassium levels), severe dizziness, fainting, or kidney and liver problems.

Is CTD O 12.5/40 MG safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

CTD O 12.5/40 MG is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy as it can cause serious harm to the developing fetus. It is also considered probably unsafe during breastfeeding, as limited data suggest the drug may pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Can CTD O 12.5/40 MG be taken with other medications?

It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions. CTD O 12.5/40 MG may interact with lithium-based medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), potassium-sparing diuretics, and potassium supplements, potentially leading to increased lithium toxicity, reduced blood pressure-lowering effects, or elevated potassium levels.

What precautions should be taken while on CTD O 12.5/40 MG?

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, liver disease, diabetes, heart conditions, glaucoma, gout, asthma, or any allergies. Avoid consuming alcohol and grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as these can increase the risk of side effects or enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect. This medication may cause dizziness, so caution is advised when driving or operating heavy machinery. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels is crucial during treatment.

What happens if a dose of CTD O 12.5/40 MG is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should CTD O 12.5/40 MG be stored?

Store CTD O 12.5/40 MG tablets in a cool and dry place, preferably below 30°C. Keep the medicine away from direct sunlight, moisture, and out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
