Description

RYZODEG PENFILL 100 IU/ML 3 ML CARTRIDGE

Ryzodeg Penfill 100 IU/ML is a combination insulin product designed for managing diabetes mellitus.

  • Name: Ryzodeg Penfill (Brand Name).
  • Composition: Each mL contains 100 units of insulin degludec (70%) and insulin aspart (30%) as active ingredients. It also contains glycerol, phenol, metacresol, zinc acetate, sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, and water for injections.
  • Uses: Ryzodeg 100 IU/ML is prescribed for the treatment of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults and children aged 6 years and older. It helps to regulate blood glucose levels by providing both ultra-long-acting insulin (insulin degludec) for basal control and rapid-acting insulin (insulin aspart) to manage post-meal blood sugar spikes.
  • Dosage and Administration: This medicine is administered via subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Injection sites should be rotated regularly within the same region to prevent skin changes. It can be taken once or twice daily with the main meal(s). If dosing time changes, ensure a minimum 8-hour gap between doses. Always use a new needle for each injection and never inject into a vein or muscle. Dosage is individualized based on patient needs and blood glucose monitoring.
  • Side Effects: The most common side effect is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels). Other common side effects include injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling, itching), lipodystrophy (skin thickening or pits), weight gain, rash, and edema. Serious but rare side effects can include severe allergic reactions and hypokalemia.
  • Precautions:
    • Do not use if you have hypoglycemia or are allergic to any ingredients.
    • Monitor blood sugar frequently, especially during changes in regimen, illness, or altered diet/exercise.
    • Exercise caution with kidney, liver, or heart conditions.
    • Avoid alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.
    • Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
    • Do not share needles.
  • Storage: Unopened cartridges should be stored in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) and protected from light; do not freeze. After first opening or if carried as a spare, the cartridge can be stored below 30°C or in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C) for up to 28 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about RYZODEG PENFILL 100 IU/ML

What is RYZODEG PENFILL used for?

RYZODEG PENFILL 100 IU/ML is a combination of two types of insulin: insulin degludec (long-acting) and insulin aspart (rapid-acting). It is used to manage blood sugar levels in adults, adolescents, and children from 2 years of age with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps provide steady insulin levels throughout the day and night, as well as control blood sugar spikes after meals.

How does RYZODEG PENFILL work?

RYZODEG PENFILL works by mimicking the natural insulin produced by the body. The insulin degludec component forms soluble multi-hexamers upon injection, creating a depot from which insulin is continuously and slowly absorbed, providing a flat and stable glucose-lowering effect for over 24 hours. The insulin aspart component is absorbed rapidly, providing quick mealtime coverage. Together, these components facilitate glucose uptake by muscle and fat cells and inhibit glucose production by the liver, thus lowering blood sugar.

What is the usual dosage for RYZODEG PENFILL?

The dosage of RYZODEG PENFILL is individualized based on the patient's metabolic needs, blood glucose monitoring results, and glycemic control goals. For patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus, the recommended total daily starting dose is typically 10 units with meal(s), followed by individual dosage adjustments. For Type 1 diabetes mellitus, the recommended starting dose is 60–70% of the total daily insulin requirements, used once daily at mealtime in combination with short-/rapid-acting insulin at the remaining meals. It can be administered once or twice daily with the main meal(s). Dose adjustments are usually based on fasting plasma glucose measurements and may be necessary if there are changes in physical activity, diet, or during illness.

What are the possible side effects of RYZODEG PENFILL?

The most common side effect of RYZODEG PENFILL is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can be severe. Other common side effects include allergic reactions, injection site reactions (such as pain, redness, hives, swelling, or itching), body fat redistribution (lipodystrophy) at the injection site, itching, rash, swelling, and weight gain. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur.

Is RYZODEG PENFILL safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

There is limited clinical experience with RYZODEG PENFILL in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Intensified blood glucose control and monitoring are recommended throughout pregnancy and when contemplating pregnancy for women with diabetes. Insulin requirements typically decrease in the first trimester and increase in the second and third trimesters. It is unknown if insulin degludec/insulin aspart is excreted in human milk, but animal studies show insulin degludec is secreted in milk at lower concentrations than in plasma. Breastfeeding mothers may require adjustments in insulin dose. RYZODEG PENFILL should only be used during pregnancy if prescribed by a doctor.

Can RYZODEG PENFILL be taken with other medications?

RYZODEG PENFILL can interact with various medications, which may either intensify or reduce its blood sugar-lowering effect. Medications that may require a dose reduction of RYZODEG PENFILL and increased glucose monitoring include other antidiabetic agents, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blocking agents, salicylates, and certain antibiotics. Medications that may require dose increases and increased glucose monitoring include atypical antipsychotics, corticosteroids, diuretics, oral contraceptives, and thyroid hormones. Alcohol can also intensify or reduce the hypoglycaemic effect of insulin. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

What precautions should be taken with RYZODEG PENFILL?

Always check the insulin label before each injection to prevent medication errors. Do not share your RYZODEG PENFILL device with another person, even if the needle is changed, due to the risk of transmitting blood-borne pathogens. Rotate injection sites within the same region (thigh, upper arm, or abdomen) to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy (skin thickening or lumps). Be aware of the signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). If you have kidney or liver disease, low potassium levels (hypokalemia), or are prone to recurrent hypoglycemia, your doctor may need to adjust your dose and monitor you more closely.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If a dose of RYZODEG PENFILL is missed, you can take the missed dose with the next main meal of that day, and then resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose. Ensure there is a minimum gap of 8 hours between doses.

How should RYZODEG PENFILL be stored?

Unopened RYZODEG PENFILL cartridges should be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze RYZODEG PENFILL, and do not use it if it has been frozen. Once opened or in-use, the cartridge can be stored for a maximum of 4 weeks (28 days) at room temperature, below 30°C (86°F), or in a refrigerator, away from direct heat and light. Always keep the cap on the pen to protect it from light.
