Description

LOPAMIDE TABLET (10 TAB) by TORRENT PHARMACEUTICALS LTD.

LOPAMIDE TABLET is an anti-diarrheal medication manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd..

  • Name:

    • Brand Name: Lopamide Tablet
    • Common Name: Loperamide Hydrochloride
  • Composition:

    • Each tablet contains Loperamide 2 mg as the active ingredient.
  • Uses: LOPAMIDE TABLET is used for the control and symptomatic relief of various types of diarrhea.

    • Acute, non-specific diarrhea.
    • Chronic diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
    • Diarrhea associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
    • To reduce the volume of discharge from ileostomies. It works by slowing down intestinal contractions, thereby decreasing the speed at which contents pass through the bowel. This allows for increased reabsorption of fluids and electrolytes, making stools more solid and less frequent.
  • Dosage and Administration: LOPAMIDE TABLET can be taken with or without food.

    • Acute Diarrhea (Adults and children over 12 years): Initially 4 mg (2 tablets), followed by 2 mg (1 tablet) after each loose bowel movement. Do not exceed 8 mg (4 tablets) for over-the-counter use or 16 mg (8 tablets) in any 24-hour period for prescription use.
    • Chronic Diarrhea (Adults): Initial dose of 4 mg daily, adjusted as needed to 2-12 mg daily, usually not exceeding 16 mg per day.
    • Children (6-11 years): Dosage varies by age and weight; generally, 2 mg (1 tablet) after the first loose bowel movement, then 1 mg (½ tablet) after each subsequent loose bowel movement, with maximum daily doses of 4 mg (6-8 years) or 6 mg (9-11 years) in a 24-hour period. Not recommended for children under 2 years.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Constipation, nausea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, stomach pain, abdominal cramps, flatulence, and dry mouth.
    • Serious (rare but require immediate medical attention): Severe constipation, bloating, blood in stools, fever, symptoms of allergic reactions (rash, itching, hives, swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing), severe stomach pain, fast or irregular heartbeats, or fainting.
  • Precautions:

    • Do not use if allergic to loperamide or any ingredients.
    • Avoid if experiencing stomach pain without diarrhea, bloody or black/tarry stools, diarrhea with high fever, acute dysentery, ulcerative colitis, or bacterial enterocolitis.
    • Use with caution in patients with liver disease or heart rhythm problems.
    • Discontinue use if constipation, abdominal distention, or ileus develops.
    • Avoid alcohol, as it can worsen drowsiness. Tonic water may interact and cause serious heart problems.
    • Consult a doctor if diarrhea persists for more than 48 hours.
    • May cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
    • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a doctor before use.
  • Storage: Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing and out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about LOPAMIDE TABLET (Loperamide), along with concise answers:

What is LOPAMIDE TABLET used for?

LOPAMIDE TABLET is used to control and relieve the symptoms of acute diarrhea, including traveler's diarrhea. It can also be prescribed to manage chronic diarrhea in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, or to reduce the amount of drainage in individuals with ileostomies.

How does LOPAMIDE TABLET work?

LOPAMIDE TABLET contains loperamide, which works by slowing down the movement of food through your intestines. This allows more time for water and electrolytes to be absorbed back into the body from the bowel, resulting in firmer stools and reduced frequency of bowel movements. It primarily acts on mu-opioid receptors in the gut wall.

What is the usual dosage for adults with acute diarrhea?

For adults with acute diarrhea, the usual starting dose is 4 mg (two 2 mg tablets) after the first loose bowel movement. After that, take 2 mg (one 2 mg tablet) after each subsequent loose bowel movement. The total daily dose should generally not exceed 8 mg (4 tablets) for over-the-counter use, or 16 mg (8 tablets) if prescribed by a doctor. It is important to follow the directions on the label or your doctor's instructions.

What are the possible side effects of LOPAMIDE TABLET?

Common side effects can include constipation, nausea, abdominal cramps, flatulence (farting), and headaches. More serious, though rare, side effects can occur, especially with higher than recommended doses, such as serious heart rhythm problems (like irregular heartbeat), dizziness, drowsiness, or severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling of the face/throat, difficulty breathing). If you experience any severe or concerning side effects, seek immediate medical attention.

Is LOPAMIDE TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Loperamide is generally not recommended during pregnancy because there isn't enough information to definitively confirm its safety. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

Regarding breastfeeding, only tiny amounts of loperamide pass into breast milk, and it's not expected to cause side effects in the baby. However, manufacturers often recommend against breastfeeding while using it, so it's best to discuss this with your healthcare professional.

Can LOPAMIDE TABLET be taken with other medications?

Loperamide can interact with certain other medications, which may increase the risk of side effects, including serious heart problems. You should inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, and herbal products you are taking.

Specifically, caution is advised with:

  • Drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 or CYP2C8 enzymes (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, gemfibrozil).
  • P-glycoprotein inhibitors (e.g., quinidine, ritonavir, ketoconazole).
  • Other anti-motility drugs.
  • Some antidepressants (e.g., fluoxetine, citalopram).
  • Heart medications like verapamil or diltiazem.
  • Tonic water and grapefruit juice, which can also interact and may cause serious heart problems.

What precautions should be taken when using LOPAMIDE TABLET?

  • Do not use LOPAMIDE TABLET if you have severe diarrhea with a high fever, bloody or black stools (signs of dysentery), acute ulcerative colitis, or diarrhea caused by a bacterial infection or antibiotics.
  • It should not be given to children younger than 2 years of age, and for children under 12, it should only be used under a doctor's guidance or prescription.
  • If your diarrhea does not stop after 2 days (for acute diarrhea) or if your symptoms worsen, or if you experience stomach pain, bloating, or a fever, stop taking the medicine and consult your doctor.
  • Drink plenty of clear fluids to prevent dehydration, which can be caused by diarrhea.
  • Be aware that this medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Use with caution if you have liver problems or a heart rhythm disorder.

What happens if a dose is missed?

LOPAMIDE TABLET is usually taken on an "as needed" basis after each loose bowel movement. If you miss a dose, you typically don't need to do anything. If you are on a scheduled dosing regimen (e.g., for chronic diarrhea), take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should LOPAMIDE TABLET be stored?

Store LOPAMIDE TABLET in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. It should be kept from freezing. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
