Frequently Asked Questions

NURIL 5MG (Enalapril) FAQs

What is Nuril 5MG used for?

Nuril 5MG, which contains the active ingredient Enalapril, is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is also prescribed for managing heart failure and can be used to prevent heart attack and stroke. Additionally, it may be prescribed after a heart attack to improve recovery and is used in the treatment of left ventricular dysfunction, a condition where the heart's pumping capacity is lowered.

How does Nuril 5MG work?

Nuril 5MG belongs to a class of medicines called Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of an enzyme responsible for forming a substance called angiotensin, which normally constricts blood vessels. By blocking this, Enalapril relaxes and widens the blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow through. This reduces blood pressure and the workload on the heart, allowing it to pump more effectively.

What is the usual dosage of Nuril 5MG?

The dosage of Nuril 5MG varies based on the condition being treated and individual response. For adults with arterial hypertension, the usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily. For heart failure, the initial dose may be lower, around 2.5 mg once or twice daily. The maintenance dose for hypertension typically ranges from 10 mg to 40 mg per day, taken as a single dose or divided into two doses. For heart failure, the dose may be gradually increased to 20 mg per day, divided into one or two doses. It can be taken with or without food. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding dosage.

What are the possible side effects of Nuril 5MG?

Common side effects of Nuril 5MG may include dizziness, headache, a persistent cough, low blood pressure (causing light-headedness or fainting), fatigue, weakness, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, changes in taste, and blurred vision. Some more serious but less common side effects can include chest pain, increased heartbeats, rashes, and allergy. If any side effects become bothersome or do not go away, or if you experience severe symptoms like swelling of the face, tongue, or limbs, seek immediate medical attention.

Is Nuril 5MG safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Nuril 5MG is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as it can cause harm to the developing fetus. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, inform your doctor immediately as they will likely advise you to stop taking it and switch to an alternative.

For breastfeeding mothers, Nuril 5MG is also generally not recommended. Enalapril, the active ingredient, can pass into breast milk, and breastfeeding to premature babies and newborns is not advised while taking this medicine. Discuss with your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

Can Nuril 5MG be taken with other medications?

Nuril 5MG can interact with various medications. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Be cautious if you are taking other medicines to lower blood pressure, as this can further reduce blood pressure. Combining it with potassium-containing medicines or supplements (like spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride) can lead to dangerously high potassium levels. It should not be taken with aliskiren if you have diabetes or kidney problems. Caution is also advised with certain mood/psychiatric disorder medications, lithium, anti-diabetic agents, and some anti-inflammatory drugs.

What precautions should be taken while taking Nuril 5MG?

  • Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol as it can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect and increase dizziness or sleepiness.
  • Driving: If you experience dizziness, sleepiness, or blurred vision, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have heart, kidney, or liver problems, a history of angioedema, diabetes, or are on a salt-restricted diet.
  • Surgery: If you are scheduled for surgery, you may be asked to stop taking Nuril 5MG.
  • Stopping Treatment: Do not stop taking Nuril 5MG suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can lead to a sudden increase in blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.

What happens if a dose of Nuril 5MG is missed?

If you miss a dose of Nuril 5MG, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Regular intake is important for blood pressure control.

How should Nuril 5MG be stored?

Nuril 5MG tablets should be stored at room temperature in a cool and dry place. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets, and protect it from heat and moisture.
