Description
ODIMONT LC SYP by ZYDUS CADILA
Name: Odimont-LC Syrup (Brand name). Manufactured by Zydus Cadila.
Composition: Odimont-LC Syrup contains Levocetirizine (2.5 mg/5ml) and Montelukast (4 mg/5ml) as active ingredients. Levocetirizine is an antihistamine that blocks histamine, a chemical messenger responsible for allergy symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that reduces inflammation and swelling in the airways and nose by blocking leukotrienes.
Uses: Odimont-LC Syrup is primarily prescribed for children to alleviate symptoms associated with various allergic conditions and for the management of asthma.
- Allergic Rhinitis: Effective in treating symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including hay fever, perennial allergic rhinitis, runny nose, sneezing, itching, congestion, and watery eyes.
- Asthma: Used for the prevention and long-term management of asthma, but it is not intended for stopping an acute asthma attack. It also helps with exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
- Allergic Skin Conditions: Treats conditions such as rashes, itching, hives (urticaria), allergic dermatitis, and atopic eczema by reducing inflammation and itching.
- Allergic Cough: Helps relieve allergic cough by reducing inflammation and blocking allergy triggers.
Dosage and Administration:
- Administer orally as directed by a healthcare professional, preferably at a consistent time each day.
- For asthma, it is often recommended in the evening or two hours before physical activity. For allergies, it can be given in the morning or evening based on symptom onset.
- Shake the bottle well before use. Use a measuring cup for accurate dosing.
- Can be taken with or without food.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
- Complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure maximum benefit and prevent worsening of the condition.
- If a child vomits within 30 minutes of taking the syrup, administer the same dose again; however, skip it if the next scheduled dose is approaching.
Side Effects: Most side effects are temporary and mild, subsiding as the body adjusts to the medicine.
- Common: Nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, headache, fatigue, drowsiness/sleepiness, vomiting, skin rash, fever, increased liver enzymes, abdominal pain, cough, pharynx inflammation, upper respiratory tract infections, and cold-like symptoms.
- Serious (consult a doctor if persistent or worsening): Severe dizziness, breathing difficulties, chest tightness, joint pain, difficulty in swallowing, pus in urine, indigestion, blurred vision, or major allergic reactions like severe skin rash or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat.
- Overdose symptoms: Headache, mental/mood changes (restlessness, agitation), severe drowsiness, sleepiness, stomach pain, thirst, and vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Precautions:
- Avoid use if there is a known allergy to levocetirizine, montelukast, or any other components of the syrup.
- Use with caution in children with kidney or liver problems. Dose adjustments may be necessary, and it is generally not recommended for severe kidney or liver disease.
- Inform the doctor about the child's complete medical history, including heart problems, blood disorders, phenylketonuria, or seizure disorders.
- Disclose all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, as Odimont-LC Syrup can interact with certain medicines. For example, levocetirizine can increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants, and antacids containing aluminum or magnesium may reduce its absorption. Montelukast may interact with antiasthmatic medicines like theophylline.
- This syrup contains aspartame, a source of phenylalanine, and should be used with caution in children with phenylketonuria.
- Levocetirizine may increase the risk of seizures in children with a history of convulsions.
- It contains sugar, so caution is advised for diabetic children; consult a doctor.
- Do not combine with other cold and flu medicines.
Storage:
- Store at room temperature (below 30°C) in a cool, dry place.
- Protect from direct heat and light.
- Keep the bottle cap securely closed after use.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children to prevent accidental consumption.
- Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
Frequently asked questions
What is ODIMONT LC SYP used for?
ODIMONT LC SYP is primarily used in children to manage symptoms associated with allergies. This includes conditions such as allergic rhinitis (hay fever), which causes symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose, and watery eyes. It also helps in managing allergic skin conditions like hives (urticaria) by reducing itching and inflammation, and can be used to prevent asthma attacks, including exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.
How does ODIMONT LC SYP work?
ODIMONT LC SYP contains two active ingredients: Levocetirizine and Montelukast. Levocetirizine is an antihistamine that works by blocking histamine, a natural substance in the body responsible for allergy symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks leukotrienes, which are substances in the body that cause inflammation and swelling in the airways and nose. Together, these components work to alleviate allergy symptoms and provide relief.
What is the usual dosage for ODIMONT LC SYP?
The dosage of ODIMONT LC SYP should be administered as prescribed by a doctor, as it can vary based on the child's age, the severity of the condition, and their response to the medicine. It is typically given orally, often once daily, and can be taken with or without food. It is important to use a measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing and never to exceed the prescribed amount. For asthma, it may be advised in the evening or two hours before physical activity, while for allergies, it can be morning or evening depending on symptom onset.
What are the possible side effects of ODIMONT LC SYP?
Common side effects of ODIMONT LC SYP may include headache, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fatigue. Less common but more serious side effects can include changes in behavior and mood such as agitation, anxiety, depression, irritability, sleep disturbances, and in rare cases, suicidal thoughts. If any side effects persist, worsen, or if you notice any unusual changes in your child's behavior, consult a doctor immediately.
Is ODIMONT LC SYP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
ODIMONT LC SYP is primarily recommended for pediatric use. There is limited information on its effects during pregnancy, and it is generally recommended to avoid its use unless specifically prescribed by a doctor. During breastfeeding, Levocetirizine, one of the active ingredients, passes into human milk and may cause drowsiness in the breastfed baby. Therefore, it is generally not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
Can ODIMONT LC SYP be taken with other medications?
ODIMONT LC SYP can interact with certain medications. Levocetirizine can increase the sedative effects of Central Nervous System (CNS) depressants like alprazolam and diazepam. Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium may decrease the absorption of levocetirizine. Montelukast may interact with antiasthmatic medicines such as theophylline, and also with phenytoin and rifampicin. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products your child is currently taking to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken with ODIMONT LC SYP?
Caution is advised when giving ODIMONT LC SYP to children with liver or kidney impairment, phenylketonuria (due to aspartame content in montelukast), or a history of seizure disorders, as it may increase the risk of seizures. This syrup is not meant for immediate relief of acute asthma attacks; an appropriate rescue inhaler should be used in such situations. Avoid combining it with other cold and flu medicines unless advised by a doctor. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may alter alertness.
What happens if a dose of ODIMONT LC SYP is missed?
If a dose of ODIMONT LC SYP is missed, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one. If your child vomits within 30 minutes after taking the syrup, give the same dose again, but skip it if it's already time for the next dose.
How should ODIMONT LC SYP be stored?
ODIMONT LC SYP should be stored in a cool, dry place, ideally below 30°C, and protected from direct sunlight and high heat. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Ensure the bottle cap is securely closed after each use to prevent air exposure and use it before its expiry date.
