Frequently asked questions

CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION by CENTAUR PHARMACEUTICALS PVT. LTD. is a paracetamol-based medicine used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever. It is commonly prescribed for children for various conditions.

What is CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION used for?

Centamol 125 Suspension is primarily used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever. It is effective for conditions such as headache, migraine, neuralgia, toothache, sore throat, menstrual cramps, muscle aches, and body aches. It also helps in reducing fever associated with colds and flu, and for post-immunization pyrexia (fever after vaccination).

How does CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION work?

Centamol 125 Suspension contains paracetamol, which works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers in the brain called prostaglandins. These prostaglandins are responsible for causing pain and fever. By inhibiting their release, paracetamol helps to increase the pain threshold and lower body temperature by acting on the heat-regulating centers in the brain, leading to vessel relaxation and sweating.

What is the usual dosage of CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION?

The dosage varies depending on age and weight, and should always be given as advised by a doctor. Generally, for children, the recommended dose is 10-15 mg/kg body weight, given every 4 to 6 hours, not exceeding four doses in 24 hours. For specific age groups:

  • <3 months: 10 mg/kg body weight (reduce to 5mg/kg if jaundiced).
  • 3 months–1 year: 1.25ml-2.5ml.
  • 1-5 years: 2.5ml-5ml (125mg-250mg).
  • 6-12 years: 5ml-10ml (250mg-500mg).
  • For post-immunization pyrexia in children 2-3 months of age, a dose of 60mg is recommended, with a second dose possible after 4-6 hours. Adults may take 10-20ml (500-1000mg) every 4-6 hours, up to a maximum of 4g daily. For long-term therapy, the daily dose should not exceed 2.6gm unless monitored by a doctor. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food or milk may help prevent an upset stomach.

What are the possible side effects of CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION?

Centamol 125 Suspension is generally well-tolerated, and adverse reactions are rare when taken at therapeutic doses. Possible temporary side effects include indigestion, nausea, vomiting, allergic reactions, skin rashes, itching, and blisters. Serious side effects are usually associated with overdosage and can include severe life-threatening liver injury, kidney injury, decreased platelet count, and agranulocytosis.

Is CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Paracetamol, the active ingredient in Centamol 125 Suspension, has been widely used for over 40 years and is considered safe during pregnancy when taken at therapeutic doses, with available data indicating no adverse effects on the pregnant mother or the fetus. It is often the first choice of painkiller during pregnancy or breastfeeding. For breastfeeding mothers, recommended analgesic doses do not pose a risk to the nursing infant, as only minimal amounts (0.1% to 1.85% of the maternal dose) pass into breast milk, meaning breastfeeding need not be interrupted.

Can CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications, including vitamins, minerals, prescribed drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products, as Centamol 125 Suspension can interact with several drugs. Do not take Centamol 125 Suspension with other medicines that also contain paracetamol, as this can lead to an overdose and dangerous side effects, including liver damage. Specific interactions include:

  • Anticoagulant drugs (e.g., warfarin): Dosage may need reduction if taken for a prolonged period.
  • Metoclopramide or domperidone: These can increase paracetamol absorption.
  • Propantheline, antidepressants with anticholinergic properties, and narcotic analgesics: These can decrease paracetamol absorption.
  • Chloramphenicol: Paracetamol may increase its concentrations.
  • Cholestyramine: Reduces paracetamol absorption if given within 1 hour.
  • Other hepatotoxic drugs or drugs that induce liver microsomal enzymes (e.g., alcohol, anticonvulsants): May increase the risk of paracetamol toxicity.
  • Probenecid: Can affect paracetamol excretion and alter plasma concentrations.
  • Zidovudine: Regular use of paracetamol possibly reduces its metabolism, increasing the risk of neutropenia.

What precautions should be taken with CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION?

  • Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of use, as this can be dangerous and cause serious liver damage.
  • Avoid taking any other paracetamol-containing products simultaneously.
  • Use with caution in patients with impaired kidney or liver function, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular problems, epilepsy, and closed-angle glaucoma.
  • Chronic heavy alcohol abusers may have an increased risk of liver toxicity and should not exceed 2g/day of paracetamol.
  • Consult a doctor if your child has severe liver or kidney disease, as the dose may need adjustment or the medicine may be contraindicated.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as you remember. However, maintain a gap of at least 4-6 hours between the missed dose and the next scheduled dose. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one.

How should CENTAMOL 125 SUSPENSION be stored?

Centamol 125 Suspension should be stored below 25°C and protected from light. It should be kept at room temperature, away from heat and direct light, and out of the reach of children and pets. Do not freeze the suspension.
