Description

PROGYNOVA 2 TABLET

PROGYNOVA 2 TABLET, manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, is a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medication.

Name

  • Brand Name: Progynova 2 mg Tablet
  • Common Name: Estradiol Valerate

Composition Each tablet contains 2 mg of Estradiol Valerate, which is a prodrug of the natural human hormone 17ß-estradiol. It also contains lactose and sucrose as excipients.

Uses PROGYNOVA 2 TABLET is primarily used for hormone replacement therapy to alleviate symptoms of estrogen deficiency in peri- and postmenopausal women. These symptoms include hot flushes, sweats, sleep disturbances, depressive moods, irritability, headaches, dizziness, and vaginal dryness and burning. It is also prescribed for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at high risk of fractures, for hypoestrogenism (estrogen deficiency), and sometimes to support fertility treatments and manage certain menstrual disorders.

Dosage and Administration Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, one PROGYNOVA 2 mg tablet is taken daily. Tablets should be swallowed whole with some liquid, with or without food. Treatment is typically continuous, meaning the next pack follows immediately without a break. For women with an intact uterus, a progestogen should be added for at least 12-14 days each month/cycle. If a dose is missed by less than 12-24 hours, it should be taken as soon as possible. If more than 12 hours late, the missed tablet should be disregarded to avoid irregular bleeding.

Side Effects Common side effects can include headaches, nausea, breast pain and tenderness, abdominal cramps, bloating, weight gain or loss, and irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting (which often subside with continued treatment). More serious, though less common, adverse reactions include an increased risk of blood clots, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, stroke, heart attack, gallbladder disease, and, rarely, liver tumors.

Precautions PROGYNOVA 2 TABLET is contraindicated in individuals with allergies to estradiol valerate or other ingredients, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, existing or suspected breast cancer, other hormone-dependent tumors, severe liver disease, or a history of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke. Patients should inform their doctor if they smoke, are overweight, have high blood pressure, diabetes, or thyroid disease. Regular medical check-ups, including breast and gynecological examinations, are essential during treatment. Certain medications (e.g., barbiturates, rifampicin, St. John's Wort) may interact with PROGYNOVA and reduce its effectiveness. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Storage Store PROGYNOVA 2 mg tablets below 25°C or 30°C. Keep them in their original pack, away from moisture, heat, or direct sunlight, and out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

PROGYNOVA 2 TABLET by BAYER PHARMACEUTICALS PVT LTD is a medication primarily used for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

What is Progynova 2 Tablet used for?

Progynova 2 Tablet is primarily used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to relieve symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flushes, sweats, sleep disturbances, depressive moods, irritability, dizziness, headaches, and vaginal dryness and burning. It is also used to treat estrogen deficiency and to prevent osteoporosis (thinning of bones) in postmenopausal women who are at high risk of fractures and for whom other treatments are not suitable. Additionally, it may be used in fertility treatments, such as IVF, to help prepare the uterine lining for embryo implantation.

How does Progynova 2 Tablet work?

Progynova 2 Tablet contains estradiol valerate, which is a precursor to estradiol, a natural female hormone (estrogen). It works by replacing the estrogen that the body no longer produces in sufficient amounts, particularly during and after menopause. This replenishment of estrogen helps to alleviate menopausal symptoms and prevent bone loss.

What is the usual dosage of Progynova 2 Tablet?

Unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor, the usual dosage is one Progynova 2 mg tablet daily. The tablets should be swallowed whole with some liquid. It is important to take the tablet at the same time each day. Treatment is typically continuous, meaning the next pack follows immediately without a break. For women with an intact uterus, a progestogen should also be taken for at least 12-14 days of each 28-day cycle to reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer.

What are the possible side effects of Progynova 2 Tablet?

Common side effects can include headache, nausea, breast pain or tenderness, abdominal cramps or bloating, vaginal spotting or irregular bleeding, weight gain, and hair loss. More serious but less common side effects can include blood clots (in legs or lungs), stroke, heart attack, and an increased risk of certain cancers such as breast cancer and endometrial cancer.

Is Progynova 2 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No, Progynova 2 Tablet is not safe during pregnancy and should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy occurs. It is also contraindicated during breastfeeding, as the active ingredient can pass into breast milk and potentially affect the baby.

Can Progynova 2 Tablet be taken with other medications?

Progynova 2 Tablet can interact with other medications, potentially affecting its efficacy or increasing the risk of side effects. Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including herbal remedies. Some medicines that may interfere include anticonvulsants (e.g., barbiturates, phenytoin, carbamazepine), antibiotics (e.g., rifampicin, clarithromycin, erythromycin), medicines for HIV (e.g., ritonavir, nevirapine), some Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) treatments, and herbal medicines containing St. John's Wort.

What precautions should be taken when using Progynova 2 Tablet?

Before starting and during treatment, your doctor should conduct thorough medical examinations, including gynecological and breast exams, and regularly monitor your progress. Inform your doctor if you smoke, are overweight, or have a history of conditions such as high blood pressure, liver disease, heart or kidney disease, or blood clotting disorders. Alcohol consumption should be done with caution. Avoid smoking as it increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack. Grapefruit juice should also be avoided.

What happens if a dose of Progynova 2 Tablet is missed?

If you miss a tablet but are less than 12-24 hours late, take it as soon as you remember and then take the next tablet at the usual time. If you are more than 12-24 hours late, skip the forgotten tablet and continue with your regular schedule, as taking a double dose is not recommended. Missing doses for several days may lead to irregular bleeding or spotting.

How should Progynova 2 Tablet be stored?

Progynova 2 Tablet should be stored below 25°C or 30°C, depending on the specific product information, in a cool, dry place, protected from moisture, heat, and sunlight. Keep the tablets in their original packaging until it's time to take them, and keep them out of sight and reach of children.
