OFLOX REDIUSE Suspension

OFLOX REDIUSE, manufactured by Cipla Ltd., is an antibiotic medication available as an oral suspension. It contains Ofloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class of drugs.

  • Composition: The active ingredient is Ofloxacin, typically available in strengths such as 50mg/5ml or 100mg/5ml.

  • Uses: OFLOX REDIUSE is primarily used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in children, though the 100mg variant can be for adults too. It is effective against bacterial infections affecting:

    • Respiratory Tract (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis, tonsillitis).
    • Urinary Tract (e.g., bladder and kidney infections).
    • Skin and Soft Tissues (e.g., cellulitis, impetigo, infected wounds).
    • Gastrointestinal Tract (e.g., infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever).
    • Ears and Eyes (e.g., bacterial conjunctivitis, ear infections).
    • Bone, joint, abdomen, and prostate infections.
    • It is also part of the treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and certain sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea. It does not treat viral infections.
  • Dosage and Administration: This medicine is taken orally, with or without food, preferably at a fixed time each day. Shake the bottle well before use and measure the dose accurately with a measuring cup, syringe, or dropper. The dosage and duration are determined by the doctor based on the infection's type and severity, and the patient's age and weight. If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes of intake, the dose may be repeated, but avoid doubling the next scheduled dose.

  • Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, itching, insomnia, rash, genital itching, vaginal inflammation, and taste changes. More serious, though less common, effects can include tendinitis, tendon rupture, and serious heart rhythm issues. Overdose symptoms may include confusion, dizziness, and seizures.

  • Precautions: Do not use if allergic to Ofloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics. Use with caution in individuals with a history of tendinitis, myasthenia gravis, QT prolongation, liver or kidney impairment, or heart conditions. Avoid dairy products as they can reduce efficacy. Limit sun exposure due to potential photosensitivity. This medicine may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so avoid driving or operating machinery. Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, at temperatures between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

OFLOX REDIUSE is an antibiotic medication primarily used to treat various bacterial infections. It contains Ofloxacin, which belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics.

What is OFLOX REDIUSE used for?

OFLOX REDIUSE is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections affecting different parts of the body. These include infections of the respiratory tract (like pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis), urinary tract (including UTIs and prostate infections), skin and soft tissues (such as cellulitis and impetigo), eyes, ears, nose, and throat. It is also effective against infectious diarrhea, typhoid fever, gonorrhoea, pelvic inflammatory disease, and is part of the treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

How does OFLOX REDIUSE work?

OFLOX REDIUSE, containing Ofloxacin, works by inhibiting the multiplication and growth of bacteria. It interferes with bacterial DNA replication by binding to essential bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. These enzymes are crucial for the bacteria's survival and cell division. By blocking their function, Ofloxacin causes damage to the bacterial cell wall and genetic material, leading to the death of the bacterial cells.

What is the usual dosage for OFLOX REDIUSE?

The dosage of OFLOX REDIUSE depends on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and body weight. For children, the recommended dose is typically calculated based on weight, usually 7.5 to 10 mg/kg every 12 hours for 10 to 14 days. For adults, the usual dose can range from 200 to 400 mg every 12 hours. It's crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding the dose and duration of treatment. The medication can be taken with or without food, but taking it at a fixed time each day is recommended for consistent drug levels.

What are the possible side effects of OFLOX REDIUSE?

Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), itching, rash, and changes in taste. More serious, though less common, side effects can include tendon disorders (like tendinitis and tendon rupture), numbness due to nerve damage, seizures, psychosis, and muscle weakness in people with myasthenia gravis. If you experience persistent or bothersome side effects, or any severe reactions like allergic symptoms (rashes, swelling, difficulty breathing), inform your doctor immediately.

Is OFLOX REDIUSE safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

OFLOX REDIUSE should generally be avoided during pregnancy as it may cause harm to the unborn baby. It is not known if or how ofloxacin could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby, so it should be used with caution, and only if recommended by a doctor. During breastfeeding, Ofloxacin can pass into human breast milk and potentially cause serious harm to the baby. Therefore, breastfeeding should be discontinued while taking this medicine.

Can OFLOX REDIUSE be taken with other medications?

OFLOX REDIUSE can interact with several other medications. It should not be taken within two hours of medicines or dietary supplements containing iron, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, or sucralfate, as these can reduce the absorption and effectiveness of Ofloxacin. Caution is advised when taken with anti-HIV medicines, anticoagulants like warfarin, painkillers like ibuprofen or diclofenac, and corticosteroids. It may also increase the levels of other drugs like cyclosporine and theophylline. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using OFLOX REDIUSE?

Several precautions should be observed when taking OFLOX REDIUSE:

  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or use sunscreen, as the medicine can increase sensitivity to light (photosensitivity).
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of fits (epilepsy), mental illness, myasthenia gravis, liver or kidney disorders, or diabetes.
  • Patients over 60 years of age may have an increased risk of tendon disorders.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol, as it may worsen side effects like drowsiness or dizziness.
  • Do not consume dairy products within two hours before or after taking OFLOX REDIUSE, as they can interfere with absorption.
  • This medicine is generally not recommended for children below 18 years of age, though it is sometimes prescribed for pediatric use under specialist medical supervision.
  • Do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you experience drowsiness, dizziness, or visual disturbances.

What happens if a dose of OFLOX REDIUSE is missed?

If a dose of OFLOX REDIUSE is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one. It is important to complete the entire course of treatment, even if you feel better, to prevent the bacteria from becoming resistant.

How should OFLOX REDIUSE be stored?

OFLOX REDIUSE should be stored at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry place, typically between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
