Frequently asked questions
ESTROPLUS Tablet (21 TAB) by Alembic Pharmaceuticals Limited is a combination hormonal contraceptive primarily used to prevent pregnancy. It contains Ethinyl Estradiol and Dienogest.
What is ESTROPLUS Tablet used for?
ESTROPLUS Tablet is mainly used for contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Additionally, it is prescribed for managing heavy menstrual bleeding, regulating menstrual cycles, reducing menstrual pain, decreasing the risk of ectopic pregnancies, lowering the incidence of benign breast disease, and managing moderate acne vulgaris in women unresponsive to other treatments.
How does ESTROPLUS Tablet work?
ESTROPLUS Tablet combines two synthetic female hormones, Dienogest (a progestin) and Ethinyl Estradiol (an estrogen). These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by suppressing ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries), thickening the cervical mucus to make it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, and altering the lining of the uterus to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg.
What is the usual dosage for ESTROPLUS Tablet?
The typical dosage involves taking one tablet daily for 21 consecutive days. After completing a pack, the next pack generally starts between day 2 and day 5 of your menstrual cycle. It is important to take the tablet at approximately the same time each day, with or without food, as advised by your physician.
What are the possible side effects of ESTROPLUS Tablet?
Common side effects may include headache, nausea, breast tenderness or discomfort, spotting or bleeding between menstrual periods, mood changes, acne, and weight gain. Some individuals might also experience stomach pain, absence of periods, painful or irregular bleeding, difficulty wearing contact lenses, vaginal irritation, urinary tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, depression, trouble sleeping, nervousness, back pain, fatigue, fever, allergy, rash, diarrhea, and flatulence. Serious, though less common, side effects can include blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke), loss of eyesight, jaundice, allergic reactions, and inflammation of the liver. While it does not cause breast cancer, it may slightly increase the risk of cervical cancer.
Is ESTROPLUS Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
No, ESTROPLUS Tablet is contraindicated during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or suspect you are pregnant, you should stop taking the medicine immediately and consult your doctor. It is also not advisable to take it immediately after delivery; generally, it should only be used after 4 weeks postpartum, following a doctor's consultation.
Can ESTROPLUS Tablet be taken with other medications?
It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking, including herbal remedies and over-the-counter drugs. ESTROPLUS Tablet may interact with certain medicines, such as those used to manage epilepsy (e.g., primidone, phenytoin, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, lamotrigine), tuberculosis (e.g., rifampicin), HIV infection (e.g., ritonavir, nevirapine, efavirenz), fungal infections (e.g., ketoconazole, griseofulvin), arthritis (e.g., etoricoxib), and the herbal remedy St. John's wort, potentially reducing its effectiveness or causing other issues.
What precautions should be taken while using ESTROPLUS Tablet?
ESTROPLUS Tablet is not recommended for individuals with a history of blood clots or those at high risk for them, kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease, or scheduled surgeries. It should be used with caution in patients with depression, varicose veins, inflammatory bowel disease, and anaemia. Smoking, especially for women over 35, increases the risk of serious heart-related problems and should be avoided. Regular blood pressure monitoring is recommended as the medication may increase blood pressure. It is generally not recommended for post-pubertal female children under 18 or elderly women without specific caution and medical advice.
What happens if a dose of ESTROPLUS Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule; do not double the dose to catch up. If you miss multiple doses, the contraceptive effectiveness may be reduced, and it is advisable to use additional contraceptive precautions, such as condoms. If vomiting occurs within 4 hours of taking a dose, another tablet should be taken. If a dose is missed by more than 12 hours, use a condom during intercourse for the next 2 days.
How should ESTROPLUS Tablet be stored?
ESTROPLUS Tablet should be stored below 30°C.
