Frequently asked questions
MUCIFLO TAB is a medication containing a combination of Acebrophylline and N-Acetylcysteine, primarily used to manage various respiratory conditions. Acebrophylline acts as a bronchodilator, relaxing the muscles in the airways to facilitate easier breathing, while N-Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic agent that thins and loosens mucus, making it easier to clear from the lungs.
Here are some frequently asked questions about MUCIFLO TAB:
What is MUCIFLO TAB used for?
MUCIFLO TAB is used to treat and prevent symptoms associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions that involve airway inflammation and excessive mucus production. It can also be used in managing complications of pulmonary cystic fibrosis and pneumonia.
How does MUCIFLO TAB work?
MUCIFLO TAB combines two active ingredients: Acebrophylline and N-Acetylcysteine. Acebrophylline acts as a bronchodilator and a mucoregulator. It relaxes the smooth muscles of the airways, widening them to improve airflow, and helps regulate mucus production. N-Acetylcysteine is a powerful mucolytic agent that breaks down the disulfide bonds within thick mucus, making it thinner and easier to cough up and expel from the lungs. This dual action helps to clear airways and improve breathing.
What is the usual dosage for MUCIFLO TAB?
The usual adult dose is typically one tablet, taken two or three times daily, or sometimes once daily, preferably in the evening, as prescribed by your doctor. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions regarding the dosage and duration. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, and not crushed, broken, or chewed. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset.
What are the possible side effects of MUCIFLO TAB?
Common side effects of MUCIFLO TAB may include vomiting, heartburn, stomach upset, nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, constipation, drowsiness, and skin rash. These side effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve over time. If any side effects persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult your doctor.
Is MUCIFLO TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
MUCIFLO TAB is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy as there is limited safety data available. Similarly, it is not recommended while breastfeeding, as it is unknown if its components pass into breast milk. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding before taking this medication.
Can MUCIFLO TAB be taken with other medications?
MUCIFLO TAB can interact with certain other medications. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking. Particular caution is advised with oral contraceptives, steroids, water pills (diuretics like frusemide), antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, doxycycline, gentamycin, azithromycin), allopurinol (for gout), cimetidine (for stomach ulcers), isoprenaline, diltiazem, and verapamil (for heart problems).
What precautions should be taken while taking MUCIFLO TAB?
Before starting MUCIFLO TAB, inform your doctor if you have any existing liver or kidney problems, heart conditions (such as fast or irregular heartbeats, low blood pressure, heart attack, heart failure), an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), fits (seizure disorders), stomach ulcers, or viral infections. Alcohol consumption should be avoided or limited while on this medication as it may increase drowsiness or alter its effectiveness. MUCIFLO TAB is not recommended for children under 14 years of age, and some sources indicate under 6 years.
What happens if a dose of MUCIFLO TAB is missed?
If you miss a dose of MUCIFLO TAB, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should MUCIFLO TAB be stored?
MUCIFLO TAB should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Always check the expiration date before using the medication.
