Description

Ipravent Respirator Solution 15ml by Cipla Ltd. is an anticholinergic bronchodilator used to manage various respiratory conditions.

Name

  • Brand Name: Ipravent Respirator Solution
  • Common Name: Ipratropium bromide

Composition

  • Active Ingredient: Ipratropium bromide 250 mcg/ml.
  • Inactive Ingredients: Sodium chloride, and water for injections. It does not contain preservatives in the unit dose vials.

Uses

Ipravent Respirator Solution is primarily used for the maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. It helps to relieve symptoms such as chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing by relaxing the muscles in the airways, thereby widening them and making breathing easier. It may also be used for other lung conditions where breathing is difficult, including after surgery or during assisted ventilation. It is important to note that this medicine is for maintenance treatment and not for immediate relief of sudden breathing problems or acute asthma attacks.

Dosage and Administration

Ipravent Respirator Solution is intended for inhalation only, using a suitable nebulising equipment. The specific dose and duration of treatment are determined by a physician based on the patient's age, body weight, and medical condition.

  • Adults (12 years and older): The usual dose is 250 mcg to 500 mcg, diluted to 2 to 3 mL with normal saline and nebulized until the entire volume is inhaled, typically three or four times a day, every 6 to 8 hours as needed.
  • Children (5 to 12 years): The recommended dose is 125 mcg to 250 mcg, administered three or four times a day, every 4 to 6 hours as needed. For acute asthma in children under 6 years, 125-250 mcg, given no more often than every 6 hours up to a total dose of 1 mg. For children 6-12 years, 250 mcg, repeated as necessary up to a total dose of 1 mg.
  • It is crucial not to exceed the prescribed dose or frequency. If a dose is missed, take the next scheduled dose; do not take extra doses to compensate. Ensure the nebuliser mask is correctly fitted to prevent the mist from contacting the eyes.

Storage

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, at a temperature between 10ºC to 30ºC. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Once diluted with sterile saline, solutions should be used within 24 hours if stored at room temperature or within 48 hours if refrigerated. Discard any unused portion if it is a unit-dose vial.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ipravent Respirator Solution used for?

Ipravent Respirator Solution is used to manage breathing problems associated with chronic asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It helps to relieve symptoms such as tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing, making breathing easier. It is intended for maintenance treatment and should not be used as a rescue inhaler for sudden, acute breathing difficulties.

How does Ipravent Respirator Solution work?

Ipravent Respirator Solution contains Ipratropium, which is an anticholinergic bronchodilator. It works by blocking certain chemical signals in the body, primarily by relaxing the muscles in the airways of the lungs and widening them. This action helps to decrease muscle contraction around the airways and can also reduce mucus (phlegm) production, thereby improving airflow and making it easier to breathe.

What is the usual dosage for Ipravent Respirator Solution?

The dosage and duration of treatment for Ipravent Respirator Solution are determined by your doctor based on your age, body weight, and specific medical condition. It is meant for inhalation use only and should be administered exactly as advised by your physician. Do not use more or less than the prescribed dose, or stop using the medicine without consulting your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of Ipravent Respirator Solution?

Common side effects include headache, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, cough, and throat irritation. If these effects bother you or worsen, consult your doctor.

More serious but uncommon side effects can include wheezing or difficulty breathing that worsens after use (paradoxical bronchospasm), allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or sudden difficulties in breathing and reduction of blood pressure), and fast, uneven, or irregular heartbeat. If any of these serious side effects occur, seek immediate medical attention.

Accidental contact with the eyes may cause painful, stinging, or red eyes, dilated pupils, blurred vision, or seeing halos or odd colors. If this happens, or if you experience any other eye problems, consult your doctor.

Is Ipravent Respirator Solution safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Ipravent Respirator Solution should be used with caution during pregnancy, and only if clearly needed after consulting your doctor, as safety data has not been fully established. While animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects, human studies are limited. Your doctor will determine if the benefits outweigh the potential risks.

Breastfeeding: This medicine should be used with caution by breastfeeding women. It is not known whether the medicine passes into breast milk. Limited human data suggests the drug does not pose a significant risk to the baby. Consult your doctor before using this medicine while breastfeeding.

Can Ipravent Respirator Solution be taken with other medications?

It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking, including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal supplements. Ipravent Respirator Solution may interact with other bronchodilators, such as epinephrine, potentially increasing the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. It may also interact with other medicines used to relax muscles for COPD (e.g., tiotropium), medications for irritable bowel syndrome (e.g., mebeverine), medicines for urinary incontinence (e.g., oxybutynin, solifenacin), certain cough medicines (e.g., dextromethorphan), and other breathing medications like salbutamol, theophylline, and aminophylline.

What precautions should be taken while using Ipravent Respirator Solution?

Before using this medicine, inform your doctor if you have pre-existing conditions such as cystic fibrosis, raised eye pressure (glaucoma), prostate problems (for men), or difficulty passing urine.

Care should be taken to prevent the solution from getting into your eyes during inhalation, as it can cause eye pain, blurred vision, and other eye issues; closing your eyes while inhaling may help. If you experience worsened wheezing or breathing difficulties after using the solution, discontinue treatment immediately and seek medical advice.

It is advisable to rinse your mouth with water after each inhalation to help prevent dry mouth and throat irritation. Additionally, caution is advised regarding alcohol consumption, and if you experience dizziness or blurred vision, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery. Use with caution if you have liver or kidney disease.

What happens if a dose of Ipravent Respirator Solution is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one, as this may increase the chance of side effects.

How should Ipravent Respirator Solution be stored?

Ipravent Respirator Solution should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and not above 25°C. Keep it in its original container until it is time for use and ensure it is out of the sight and reach of children. Once a respule or transpule is opened, the liquid should be used immediately.
