Description

Name: Zithium 500 Tablet (Brand name: Zithium)

Composition: Each Zithium 500 Tablet contains 500 mg of Azithromycin. Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic.

Uses: Zithium 500 Tablet is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria. It is prescribed for:

  • Respiratory tract infections: Such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and infections of the nose, throat, and lungs.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Including acne, rosacea, cellulitis, and impetigo.
  • Ear infections: Like acute otitis media (middle ear infection).
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Including Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and genital ulcer disease.
  • Other infections: Typhoid fever, urinary system infections, and for preventing Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in HIV patients. It does not treat viral infections like the flu or common cold.

Dosage and Administration: Zithium 500 Tablet should be taken as directed by a doctor. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. It is often recommended to take it at a fixed time for optimal results. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water, not broken, crushed, or chewed. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve to prevent the infection from returning and developing resistance.

Side Effects: Common side effects include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach pain/abdominal pain
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Indigestion/upset stomach

Serious side effects are rare but can include allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, swelling of face/throat/tongue, breathing difficulties), prolonged QT interval, and worsening of myasthenia gravis symptoms.

Precautions:

  • Allergies: Do not take if allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, or other macrolide antibiotics.
  • Liver/Kidney Disease: Use with caution in patients with liver or severe kidney disease.
  • Heart Conditions: Exercise caution in patients with a prolonged QT interval, arrhythmia, or other heart problems.
  • Myasthenia Gravis: May worsen symptoms in patients with this muscle weakness disorder.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe if prescribed by a doctor, but caution is advised, and a doctor should be consulted.
  • Interactions:
    • Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium may reduce azithromycin absorption; take Zithium 500 at least one to two hours before or after antacids.
    • Consult a doctor about other medications, including antiarrhythmic drugs, warfarin, digoxin, colchicine, and certain cholesterol-lowering drugs.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and potentially harm liver function.
  • Sunlight Exposure: Zithium 500 can increase sensitivity to sunburn; use protective clothing or sunscreen when outdoors.

Storage: Store Zithium 500 Tablet in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat, typically below 30°C. Keep out of sight and reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

This information is for general knowledge and informational purposes only, and does not constitute medical advice. Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional for any health concerns or before making any decisions related to your health or treatment.

What is Zithium 500mg Tablet used for?

Zithium 500mg Tablet, containing azithromycin, is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. These include respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and sinusitis. It is also prescribed for skin and soft tissue infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, urethritis, cervicitis, and chancroid.

How does Zithium 500mg Tablet work?

Zithium 500mg Tablet works by stopping the growth of bacteria. As a macrolide antibiotic, azithromycin interferes with the bacteria's protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit within the bacterial cell, which inhibits the translation of messenger RNA (mRNA), thus preventing the bacteria from producing essential proteins needed for their growth and reproduction.

What is the usual dosage for Zithium 500mg Tablet?

The dosage of Zithium 500mg Tablet varies depending on the type and severity of the infection. For many infections, including pneumonia, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and skin infections, adults typically take 500 mg on the first day, followed by 250 mg once daily for the next 2 to 5 days. For sinusitis or chronic bronchitis flare-ups, a common dosage is 500 mg once daily for 3 days. For certain sexually transmitted infections, a single higher dose of 1 gram or 2 grams might be prescribed. Tablets can generally be taken with or without food.

What are the possible side effects of Zithium 500mg Tablet?

Common side effects of Zithium 500mg Tablet may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and an upset stomach.

More serious side effects, though less common, can occur. These include severe allergic reactions (such as rash, hives, swelling of the face or throat, and difficulty breathing), liver problems (indicated by yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe stomach pain), and changes in heart rhythm (like fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeats, fainting, or dizziness). It can also cause severe diarrhea due to Clostridioides difficile infection or worsen symptoms in patients with myasthenia gravis. If you experience any severe side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Is Zithium 500mg Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Azithromycin is generally considered acceptable for use during pregnancy if an infection requires treatment and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. However, other antibiotics may be more suitable depending on the specific infection, and it should only be used after consultation with a healthcare provider. It is classified as FDA Pregnancy Category B.

Breastfeeding: It is generally considered safe to take azithromycin while breastfeeding, as only small amounts pass into breast milk, and no consistent adverse effects have been reported in breastfed infants. However, some sources suggest caution due to a lack of definitive data. Always consult your doctor or health visitor if you have any concerns.

Can Zithium 500mg Tablet be taken with other medications?

Zithium 500mg Tablet can interact with several medications. It should not be taken with cisapride, dronedarone, pimozide, or thioridazine. Caution is advised when taken with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium; azithromycin should be taken at least 2 hours before or after these antacids. Interactions can also occur with blood thinners like warfarin, digoxin, colchicine, cyclosporine, nelfinavir, statins, and certain antiarrhythmics, which may increase the risk of heart rhythm issues (QT prolongation). Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medications and supplements you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while using Zithium 500mg Tablet?

Before taking Zithium 500mg Tablet, inform your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, or heart problems, especially those involving QT prolongation, a slow heart rate, or low levels of potassium or magnesium. It is also contraindicated if you have a history of severe allergic reactions to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, or a history of cholestatic jaundice or hepatic dysfunction related to prior azithromycin use.

What happens if a dose of Zithium 500mg Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of Zithium 500mg Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if you start to feel better, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent antibiotic resistance.

How should Zithium 500mg Tablet be stored?

Zithium 500mg Tablet should be stored at room temperature, typically between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep the medicine in its original, tightly closed container and out of reach of children. Do not refrigerate or freeze the tablets. If you have an oral suspension form, be aware of its specific storage instructions, as some require discarding within a certain timeframe after preparation.
