  • Drospirenone (3 mg)
  • Ethinyl Estradiol (0.02 mg)

Uses DRONIS 20 TABLET is prescribed for several medical conditions:

  • Contraception: It prevents unwanted pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation (release of an egg), altering sperm movement, and changing the lining of the womb to make it unfavorable for implantation.
  • Irregular Periods: It helps in managing irregular periods, making them more regular and predictable.
  • Acne Treatment: It is used to treat moderate acne in women over 14 years of age who desire oral contraception.
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): The medication can also help alleviate symptoms associated with PMDD.
  • Ovarian Cancer Risk Reduction: It may reduce the risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Dosage and Administration

  • Follow this with one light green inactive tablet daily for the next 7 days, or a 7-day pill-free interval, during which menstruation typically occurs.
  • You can start taking the tablets on either day 1 of your menstrual cycle or on a Sunday, as advised by your doctor.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food.
  • If vomiting occurs within 3-4 hours after taking a tablet, take another dose when you feel better.

Precautions

  • Contraindications: DRONIS 20 TABLET is highly unsafe during pregnancy and probably unsafe during breastfeeding. • Smoking: Avoid smoking while taking this medicine, especially if over 35, as it significantly increases the risk of blood clots, heart attack, or stroke.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the frequently asked questions about DRONIS 20 TABLET:

What is DRONIS 20 Tablet used for?

DRONIS 20 Tablet is primarily used as an oral contraceptive to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It can also be prescribed for managing irregular periods, treating moderate acne in women, and may help in reducing the risk of ovarian cancer.

How does DRONIS 20 Tablet work?

DRONIS 20 Tablet contains two active ingredients: ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and drospirenone (a progestin). These hormones work together by inhibiting ovulation (preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries), thickening the cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to reach the egg, and altering the lining of the uterus to make it unfavorable for a fertilized egg to implant.

What is the usual dosage for DRONIS 20 Tablet?

The usual dosage is one tablet taken orally at the same time every day for 21 consecutive days. This is typically followed by a 7-day period where inactive (placebo) tablets are taken, or no tablets are taken, during which menstruation (withdrawal bleeding) usually occurs. It is crucial to take the tablet at the same time each day to maintain consistent hormone levels and ensure effectiveness.

What are the possible side effects of DRONIS 20 Tablet?

Common side effects may include stomach pain, headache, nausea, breast pain or tenderness, weight gain, irregular uterine bleeding (such as spotting or bleeding between periods), vaginal discharge, vaginal yeast infection, and mood changes like depression. Serious but rare side effects can include blood clots, stroke, and liver issues. It is important to inform your doctor if any side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice symptoms like unexplained swelling and pain in limbs, shortness of breath, chest pain, or changes in vision, as these could indicate a serious condition like a blood clot.

Is DRONIS 20 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

DRONIS 20 Tablet is not safe to use during pregnancy as it can harm the developing baby. If you suspect you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, consult your doctor immediately. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding because the medicine may pass into breast milk and could potentially affect the baby or reduce milk production.

Can DRONIS 20 Tablet be taken with other medications?

DRONIS 20 Tablet can interact with other medications, potentially reducing its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. It is vital to inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking or plan to take. Particular medications that may interact include certain antifungal medications (e.g., ketoconazole, fluconazole), antibiotics (e.g., rifampin, erythromycin), antiepileptic drugs (e.g., carbamazepine, phenytoin), HIV medications (e.g., ritonavir, nelfinavir), medicines for high blood pressure, heart failure, high cholesterol, blood thinners, anti-infectives, anti-tubercular agents, anti-diabetics, anti-asthmatics, painkillers, and immunomodulatory medicines.

What precautions should be taken while using DRONIS 20 Tablet?

Do not use DRONIS 20 Tablet if you have a known allergy to its components. It is important to avoid smoking, especially if you are over 35 years old, as it significantly increases the risk of serious side effects like blood clots, heart attack, or stroke. Inform your doctor about any history of blood clots, stroke, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, certain cancers (of the uterus, cervix, vagina, or breast), liver disease, kidney disease, severe migraines, or high cholesterol. This medication is not intended for use before the first menstrual period (menarche) or after menopause. It does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. Your doctor may recommend regular check-ups, including monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, while you are on this medication.

What happens if a dose of DRONIS 20 Tablet is missed?

If you miss one tablet and remember it within 12 hours of the usual dosing time, take it as soon as you remember and continue with your regular schedule. If you miss one tablet and remember it more than 12 hours late, or if you vomit within 3-4 hours after taking a tablet, it is considered a missed dose. In such cases, take the missed tablet as soon as possible and use a backup method of contraception, such as a condom, for at least the next 2 to 7 days, as advised by your doctor. Missing multiple doses significantly increases the risk of pregnancy, so consult your healthcare provider for specific guidance if this occurs.

How should DRONIS 20 Tablet be stored?

DRONIS 20 Tablet should be stored in a cool, dry place, typically below 25°C. It should be kept away from direct sunlight and moisture. Always ensure the medication is kept out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date, and dispose of any unused medication properly according to local guidelines, rather than through household waste or wastewater.
