Description
RESTASIS Eye Drop 0.4 mL
RESTASIS Eye Drop is an ophthalmic emulsion manufactured by ALLERGAN INDIA PVT. LTD. It is designed to address chronic dry eye conditions by targeting underlying inflammation.
Name
- Common Name: Cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion
- Brand Name: RESTASIS, RESTASIS MultiDose
Composition
RESTASIS Eye Drop contains Cyclosporine 0.05% w/v as its active ingredient. Inactive ingredients include glycerin, castor oil, polysorbate 80, carbomer copolymer type A, purified water, and sodium hydroxide to adjust pH.
Uses
RESTASIS is indicated to increase natural tear production in patients whose tear production is presumed to be suppressed due to ocular inflammation associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca, also known as chronic dry eye syndrome. It works by reducing inflammation in the eyes, which helps the eyes produce more tears, thus alleviating dryness, redness, burning, and itching.
Dosage and Administration
The typical dosage of RESTASIS is one drop into each affected eye twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart.
- Wash hands before use.
- Gently invert the single-use vial a few times to ensure the emulsion is uniformly mixed and appears white and opaque.
- Carefully instill one drop into each eye.
- Avoid touching the tip of the vial to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination and potential eye injury.
- Discard the single-use vial immediately after use; do not save any remaining contents.
- If using other eye drops, wait at least 15 minutes between applications. If using eye ointments, apply RESTASIS first, wait 15 minutes, then apply the ointment.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Eye burning or stinging sensation (the most frequently reported side effect)
- Eye redness
- Watery eyes or excessive eye mucus/discharge
- Eye pain or irritation
- Blurred vision (temporary)
- Feeling like something is in the eye (foreign body sensation)
- Itchy eyes
Serious side effects are rare but can include a serious allergic reaction (e.g., eye swelling, hives, face or throat swelling, shortness of breath) or eye injury from improper application.
Precautions
- Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before administering RESTASIS. Wait at least 15 minutes before re-inserting them.
- Contamination: Do not allow the vial tip to touch the eye or any surface to prevent contamination and potential eye injury.
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use if allergic to cyclosporine or any of the ingredients.
- Other Eye Conditions: RESTASIS has not been studied in patients with a history of herpes keratitis, end-stage lacrimal gland disease, or dry eye due to vitamin A deficiency or scarring.
- Children: RESTASIS is approved for adults and children ages 16 years and older; it is not recommended for children younger than 16 years of age.
- Blurred Vision: Cyclosporine eye drops may temporarily cause blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery until vision is clear.
Storage
Store RESTASIS Eye Drop at room temperature, specifically between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Keep the single-use vials in their original thermoformed tray until use and protect from light. Do not freeze.
