TONOFERON SF CAP

TONOFERON SF CAP is a comprehensive hematinic formulation manufactured by East India Pharmaceutical Works Limited, designed to address iron and folate deficiencies.

Composition

TONOFERON SF CAP contains a combination of:

  • Ferrous Succinate BP (equivalent to 70 mg Elemental Iron)
  • Folic Acid IP (400 mcg)
  • Succinic Acid (210 mg)

Uses

This medicine is primarily used to prevent and manage nutritional anemia caused by iron or folate deficiency. It is also indicated for:

  • Iron deficiency states and depleted bone marrow iron stores.
  • Increased physiological demand during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence.
  • Recovery from chronic illnesses such as tuberculosis, malaria, kidney, and liver diseases.
  • Heavy or chronic blood loss due to surgery, bleeding piles, or gynecological disorders (from menarche to menopause).
  • Supporting red blood cell production, enhancing energy levels, and aiding oxygen transport.

Dosage and Administration

Typically, 1 capsule daily or as directed by a healthcare professional. The capsule should be swallowed whole with water; it should not be crushed or chewed. The doctor will determine the correct dose and duration based on age, body weight, and condition.

Side Effects

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach upset

Serious side effects, though rare, may include signs of allergic reactions such as skin rash, flaking skin, boils, sore lips and mouth, sudden noisy breathing, chest tightness, or collapse.

Precautions

TONOFERON SF CAP is not recommended for individuals with vitamin B12 deficiency (e.g., due to pernicious anemia or a vegetarian diet) as folic acid can mask the hematological manifestations of B12 deficiency while neurological complications progress. Consult a doctor before use if allergic to any ingredients. Caution is advised for pregnant and breastfeeding women, those with a history of neural tube defects, diabetes, obesity, or those undergoing therapy for a folate-dependent tumor. It may interact with anti-epileptics, antibacterials (like chloramphenicol, co-trimoxazole), sulfasalazine, and methotrexate.

Storage

Store TONOFERON SF CAP below 25°C in a cool, dry, and dark place, away from direct sunlight, heat, moisture, and out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

TONOFERON SF CAP is an iron and folic acid supplement primarily used to manage and prevent nutritional anemia caused by deficiencies in iron or folate. It is also beneficial in various conditions requiring increased iron and folic acid, such as during pregnancy, childhood, adolescence, and recovery from certain illnesses.

Here are some frequently asked questions about TONOFERON SF CAP:

What is TONOFERON SF CAP used for?

TONOFERON SF CAP is used to treat or prevent nutritional anemia resulting from iron or folate deficiency. It helps manage iron deficiency states and replenish depleted iron stores in the bone marrow during periods of increased physical growth and physiological demand, such as pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. It's also used during recovery from chronic illnesses like tuberculosis, malaria, kidney, and liver diseases, and following heavy blood loss from surgery, bleeding piles, or gynecological disorders. The capsule can also help combat general weakness, lack of appetite, and rundown conditions.

How does TONOFERON SF CAP work?

TONOFERON SF CAP contains Ferrous succinate, Folic acid, and Succinic acid. Ferrous succinate and succinic acid work by directly increasing the iron stores in the body, which enhances the synthesis of hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying pigment in red blood cells) and myoglobin (oxygen-carrying pigment in muscles). Folic acid is a vital co-factor in the synthesis of the "heme" part of hemoglobin and is essential for healthy red blood cell production, as well as DNA and RNA synthesis.

What is the usual dosage of TONOFERON SF CAP?

The typical dosage is one capsule daily, or as advised by your healthcare professional. The capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not crushed or chewed. It is generally recommended to take it with food to minimize the risk of stomach upset.

What are the possible side effects of TONOFERON SF CAP?

Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and stomach upset. In rare instances, allergic reactions may occur, such as skin rash, flaking skin, boils, sore lips and mouth, sudden noisy breathing, chest tightness, or collapse. If any side effects worsen or persist, it's advisable to consult your doctor.

Is TONOFERON SF CAP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

TONOFERON SF CAP should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is particularly beneficial for pregnant women who have increased iron requirements and for preventing neural tube defects. However, it is important to consult a doctor before taking it to ensure optimal outcomes for both the mother and child.

Can TONOFERON SF CAP be taken with other medications?

TONOFERON SF CAP can interact with certain medications. Inform your doctor if you are taking anti-epileptics (e.g., phenytoin, phenobarbital), antibacterials (e.g., chloramphenicol, co-trimoxazole), sulfasalazine, or methotrexate. Iron absorption can be decreased when taken with antacids, colestyramine, trientine, and proton pump inhibitors. It can also decrease the absorption of certain antibiotics like tetracycline, and reduce the efficacy of levothyroxine. Additionally, it may affect the absorption of cefdinir, bisphosphonates, entacapone, fluoroquinolones, levodopa, methyldopa, and penicillamine. Avoid taking it with milk, tea, coffee, or calcium supplements, allowing at least a 2-hour gap for better absorption.

What precautions should be taken with TONOFERON SF CAP?

TONOFERON SF CAP is not recommended for individuals with vitamin B12 deficiency (such as pernicious anemia or those on a vegetarian diet) without consulting a doctor, as folic acid can mask the symptoms of B12 deficiency. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you are undergoing therapy for a folate-dependent tumor, have a family history of neural tube defects, are obese, or have diabetes.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should TONOFERON SF CAP be stored?

Store TONOFERON SF CAP at room temperature, below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medicine out of the reach of children and pets.
