Frequently asked questions

NOVACLOX NF, manufactured by Cipla Health Limited, is a combination antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It contains Amoxicillin and Cloxacillin, which work together to eliminate bacteria.

What is NOVACLOX NF used for?

NOVACLOX NF is primarily used to manage a wide range of bacterial infections caused by both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. This includes respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and tonsillitis), urinary tract infections (like cystitis and urethritis), skin and soft tissue infections (including cellulitis, abscesses, and infected wounds), dental infections, bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis), abdominal infections (peritonitis), and genital tract infections (such as gonorrhoea).

How does NOVACLOX NF work?

NOVACLOX NF contains two active ingredients: Amoxicillin and Cloxacillin. Both are antibiotics that work by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective cell wall, which is essential for bacterial survival. By disrupting this process, the medicine weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to the breakdown and death of the bacteria. Cloxacillin is also effective against certain bacteria that produce enzymes called beta-lactamases, which can normally inactivate other penicillin-type antibiotics.

What is the usual dosage for NOVACLOX NF?

The dosage of NOVACLOX NF will be prescribed by your doctor, who will determine it based on factors like the severity of your condition and your response to treatment. It is usually taken orally, often three to four times a day. You should swallow the capsule whole with water and avoid chewing or crushing it. It can be taken with or without food. It is crucial to adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage and complete the full course of treatment, even if you start feeling better, to prevent the infection from returning and to avoid antibiotic resistance.

What are the possible side effects of NOVACLOX NF?

Common side effects of NOVACLOX NF may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal pain, headaches, skin rashes, and itching. Most of these side effects are temporary and resolve on their own. However, if you experience serious side effects or if common symptoms worsen or persist, you should consult your doctor. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions (such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or difficulty breathing) can occur, requiring immediate medical attention.

Is NOVACLOX NF safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

  • Pregnancy: NOVACLOX NF is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy if prescribed by a doctor, though caution is advised. It is best to consult your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant, as they will assess the benefits versus risks.
  • Breastfeeding: Both Amoxicillin and Cloxacillin pass into breast milk in small amounts. This may cause side effects in a breastfed baby, such as diarrhea or a fungal infection of the mouth. Therefore, caution is advised, and it should only be used during breastfeeding if medically prescribed by your doctor. Some sources recommend not breastfeeding while taking this medicine.

Can NOVACLOX NF be taken with other medications?

NOVACLOX NF can interact with certain medications. For instance, antigout medications like probenecid and allopurinol can increase the levels of Amoxicillin in your blood, potentially leading to more side effects. Other antibiotics, including doxycycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, macrolides, and sulphonamides, may interfere with the bacteria-killing effects of NOVACLOX NF. Additionally, this medicine may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so alternative birth control methods may be necessary. It can also affect the way blood thinners like warfarin work. Always inform your doctor about all other medicines, herbal preparations, and supplements you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using NOVACLOX NF?

Before taking NOVACLOX NF, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies to penicillins or cephalosporin antibiotics. Also, disclose any history of kidney or liver problems, HIV infection, blood disorders, heart disease, mononucleosis, meningitis, or frequent diarrhea. It is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption while on this medication, as it may increase the risk of side effects like nausea, vomiting, or excessive drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or convulsions, refrain from driving or operating machinery. Always complete the entire prescribed course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent bacterial resistance. If you experience severe or persistent diarrhea, contact your doctor promptly.

What happens if a dose of NOVACLOX NF is missed?

If you miss a dose of NOVACLOX NF, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Always consult your doctor before adjusting your dosage.

How should NOVACLOX NF be stored?

NOVACLOX NF should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. It is important to keep this medicine out of the reach of children. Ensure you use it before the expiration date printed on the package.
