ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET

  • Name: ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET. Also known as Clozapine Orodispersible tablet Alkepin ODT.
  • Composition: Each tablet contains Clozapine 200mg.
  • Uses: ALKEPIN ODT is an atypical antipsychotic primarily used for the management of schizophrenia, especially when at least two other antipsychotic medicines have been ineffective or caused severe side effects. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of recurrent suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. Additionally, it treats psychotic disorders in individuals with Parkinson's disease when standard treatments have failed.
  • Dosage and Administration: The initial dose is typically 12.5 mg once or twice daily. The total daily dose can be gradually increased by 25 mg to 50 mg per day, if tolerated, to reach a target dose of 300 mg to 450 mg per day within two weeks. The maximum recommended dose is 900 mg per day. ALKEPIN ODT can be taken with or without food. The orodispersible tablet should be placed in the mouth and allowed to disperse rapidly by contact with saliva before swallowing. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet.
  • Side Effects: Common side effects include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, increased saliva production, tiredness, headache, weight gain, and blurred vision. Serious side effects can include agranulocytosis (a severe drop in white blood cells), seizures, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and myocarditis.
  • Precautions: Regular blood tests, specifically Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC), are required due to the risk of agranulocytosis. ALKEPIN ODT is contraindicated in patients with a history of agranulocytosis, uncontrolled epilepsy, severe kidney disease, severe liver disease, or certain heart conditions. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness. It is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women and should be used with caution during pregnancy if clearly necessary. Patients should avoid driving or operating machinery if they experience dizziness or drowsiness.
  • Storage: Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture, and out of the reach of children. The tablets should remain in their original blister pack until use.
Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET:

What is ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET used for?

ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET, containing clozapine, is primarily used to manage schizophrenia, especially when other antipsychotic medications have been ineffective or have caused severe side effects. It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of recurrent suicidal behavior in patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and to manage psychotic disorders associated with Parkinson's disease when standard treatments have failed.

How does ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET work?

This medication is an atypical antipsychotic. It works by blocking certain chemical receptors in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin. By inhibiting or modulating the action of these neurotransmitters, it helps to improve thoughts, feelings, and behavior, thereby alleviating the symptoms of schizophrenia and other related psychotic disorders.

What is the usual dosage of ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET?

The starting dose is typically 12.5 mg, taken once or twice daily. The dosage is gradually increased by 25 mg to 50 mg per day, if well-tolerated, to reach a target dose of 300 mg to 450 mg daily by the end of two weeks. Further increases can be made once or twice weekly in increments of up to 100 mg, with a maximum daily dose of 900 mg. It can be taken with or without food. For orodispersible tablets, place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve rapidly with saliva before swallowing. Do not push through the foil or swallow whole.

What are the possible side effects of ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET?

Common side effects include dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, increased salivation, tiredness, headache, and weight gain. More serious, but less common, side effects can include severe constipation, a fast heartbeat, signs of infection (due to a rare but serious drop in white blood cells known as agranulocytosis), seizures, and symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (like a sudden rapid increase in body temperature and rigid muscles).

Is ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: It should be used with caution during pregnancy and only if clearly necessary, with the benefits outweighing the potential risks. It belongs to pregnancy category B, and you should consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy. Breastfeeding: ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET is not recommended for use by breastfeeding women as it may pass into breast milk.

Can ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET be taken with other medications?

Yes, but caution is advised as it can interact with several medications. For instance, combining it with antibiotics (like co-trimoxazole, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin), certain painkillers, or antiepileptic drugs (like carbamazepine, phenytoin) can increase the risk of side effects or reduce effectiveness. It should be used with caution with medicines that affect heart rhythm (e.g., ketoconazole) and can increase the risk of seizures when taken with tramadol. Also, it may affect the effectiveness of antidiabetic drugs and can cause hypotensive effects when taken with antihypertensives. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while using ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET?

Regular blood tests are essential to monitor white blood cell counts due to the risk of agranulocytosis. Do not stop taking this medication abruptly, as it can lead to withdrawal symptoms and a worsening of your condition. Exercise caution if you have conditions such as heart disease, liver or kidney problems, epilepsy, diabetes, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, or severe constipation. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase drowsiness and other side effects.

What happens if a dose of ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET be stored?

Store ALKEPIN ODT 200 MG TABLET below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep it in its original packaging and out of the reach of children and pets. Orodispersible tablets should remain in their unopened blister pack until the time of use.
