MUCOLITE LS SYRUP 100 ML

MUCOLITE LS SYRUP is a medication manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd., primarily used for the treatment of productive cough and associated respiratory symptoms.

Composition Each 5 ml of MUCOLITE LS SYRUP contains a combination of three active ingredients:

  • Levosalbutamol: 1 mg
  • Ambroxol Hydrochloride: 30 mg
  • Guaifenesin: 50 mg

Uses This syrup is prescribed for relieving productive cough, chest congestion, and breathing difficulties. It is effective in managing symptoms of respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by relaxing airway muscles, thinning and loosening mucus, and making it easier to cough out phlegm. It may also help alleviate symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.

Dosage and Administration MUCOLITE LS SYRUP should be taken orally, with or without food, as advised by your doctor. Shake the bottle well before each use and accurately measure the dose using the provided measuring cup or syringe. The typical recommended dosage for adults is 5-10 ml, two to three times daily, but this can vary based on the patient's age, condition severity, and doctor's instructions. Consult a doctor before administering to children, especially those under 2 or 6 years of age.

Side Effects Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, and skin rash. More serious, though rare, side effects may include fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, worsening breathing problems, or seizures. Seek immediate medical attention if any severe or unusual symptoms occur.

Precautions

  • Do not use if allergic to Levosalbutamol, Ambroxol, Guaifenesin, or any other ingredients.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult their doctor before use.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness and dizziness, and can interfere with medication absorption.
  • Use with caution in patients with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, stomach ulcers, kidney or liver disease, or a history of fits.
  • May cause dizziness or drowsiness; therefore, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if affected.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including other cough and cold medicines, beta-blockers, diuretics, cardiac glycosides, or antidepressants, to avoid potential interactions.

Storage Store MUCOLITE LS SYRUP in a cool and dry place, below 30°C (or between 10ºC to 25ºC), away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach and sight of children and pets. Ensure the bottle is tightly sealed when not in use.

Frequently asked questions

What is Mucolite LS Syrup used for?

Mucolite LS Syrup is primarily used to treat wet or productive coughs that are associated with mucus. It helps relieve symptoms such as chest congestion, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and coughing caused by respiratory conditions like bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other lung infections. Additionally, it may help alleviate allergy symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, itching, and watery eyes.

How does Mucolite LS Syrup work?

Mucolite LS Syrup is a combination medication containing three active ingredients: Levosalbutamol, Ambroxol, and Guaifenesin.

  • Levosalbutamol is a bronchodilator that works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and widening them, making breathing easier.
  • Ambroxol is a mucolytic agent that thins and loosens phlegm (mucus) in the lungs, windpipe, and nose, making it easier to cough out. It also stimulates the production of pulmonary surfactant, which lubricates the airways.
  • Guaifenesin is an expectorant that increases the volume of fluid in the airways and reduces the stickiness of mucus, aiding in its removal from the respiratory tract. Together, these ingredients work to relieve cough by clearing airways and easing breathing.

What is the usual dosage for Mucolite LS Syrup?

The dosage of Mucolite LS Syrup should always be as advised by your doctor, as it depends on factors like the patient's age, the severity of the condition, and other medical factors. As a general guideline, adults may be prescribed 5-10 ml, two to three times a day. For children, the dosage will vary based on their age and weight and must be prescribed by a doctor. It is not recommended for children under 6 years of age without consulting a doctor. Always shake the bottle well before each use and use a calibrated measuring cup or spoon provided with the pack for accurate dosing.

What are the possible side effects of Mucolite LS Syrup?

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, tremors, restlessness, anxiety, palpitations, and skin rash. Most of these side effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve over time without requiring medical attention. However, if any side effects persist or worsen, it is important to consult your doctor. In rare cases, more serious side effects like a fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, worsening breathing problems, or seizures can occur, requiring immediate medical attention.

Is Mucolite LS Syrup safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: The safety of Mucolite LS Syrup during pregnancy is not well-established, and there is limited information available. It should be used with extreme caution during pregnancy, only if the potential benefits are considered to outweigh the potential risks to the fetus, and strictly under a doctor's guidance.

Breastfeeding: It is unknown whether Mucolite LS Syrup is excreted in human milk. Limited human data suggest that the drug may not represent a significant risk to the baby, but caution is still advised. It should only be used by breastfeeding mothers if prescribed by a doctor, who will assess if the benefits are greater than the potential risks.

Can Mucolite LS Syrup be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications, including supplements or herbal preparations, you are currently taking before starting Mucolite LS Syrup. Concomitant use with cough suppressants is not recommended as they have opposing effects. Specific interactions have been noted with medications such as Atenolol, Ketoconazole, Propranolol, Xylometazoline, Furosemide, Hydrochlorothiazide, Formoterol, and Pseudoephedrine. Additionally, this syrup can increase the concentrations of certain antibiotics like Amoxicillin, Cefuroxime, and Erythromycin in the sputum.

What precautions should be taken while using Mucolite LS Syrup?

Do not take Mucolite LS Syrup if you are allergic to any of its components. Exercise caution if you have underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease (including high blood pressure), liver disease, kidney disease, stomach ulcers, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), or a history of seizures. Mucolite LS Syrup may cause dizziness or drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. It is also advisable to avoid consuming alcohol while taking this syrup, as it can worsen drowsiness and dizziness. If your cough persists for more than one week, tends to recur, or is accompanied by a fever, rash, or persistent headache, consult your doctor immediately.

What happens if a dose of Mucolite LS Syrup is missed?

If you miss a dose of Mucolite LS Syrup, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

How should Mucolite LS Syrup be stored?

Mucolite LS Syrup should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, ideally below 30°C (or between 10ºC to 25ºC). Keep the medicine out of reach and sight of children and pets. Ensure that any unused or expired medicine is disposed of properly and not flushed down the toilet or thrown into the drain.
