Frequently asked questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions about GEMITROL NS SPRAY by TORRENT PHARMA:
What is GEMITROL NS SPRAY used for?
GEMITROL NS SPRAY is primarily used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to weaken and become brittle in women who are at least five years past menopause, especially when other treatments are not suitable. It is also used to manage Paget's disease, a condition that affects the bone remodeling process, and bone pain associated with osteolysis and/or osteopenia.
How does GEMITROL NS SPRAY work?
GEMITROL NS SPRAY contains Calcitonin (salmon), which is a synthetic polypeptide hormone that works by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue. By suppressing osteoclast activity, it helps to decrease bone resorption, increase bone density, and strengthen bones, thereby reducing the risk of fractures.
What is the usual dosage for GEMITROL NS SPRAY?
For postmenopausal osteoporosis, the recommended dosage is 200 IU (International Units) administered once a day intranasally, with alternating nostrils daily. For conditions like bone pain associated with osteolysis and/or osteopenia, the dosage can be 200-400 IU daily, given as a single dose or in divided doses if higher amounts are needed. For Paget's disease, the typical dosage is 200 IU daily as a single dose, though 400 IU in divided doses may be necessary at the start of therapy in some cases. Your physician will determine the correct dosage and treatment duration based on your individual condition.
What are the possible side effects of GEMITROL NS SPRAY?
Common side effects can include nasal irritation, runny nose, nosebleeds, headaches, back pain, and joint pain. Other reported side effects include sinus pain, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, and a change in taste. Rarely, more severe allergic reactions like skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, eyes, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, or a sudden drop in blood pressure can occur, requiring immediate medical attention.
Is GEMITROL NS SPRAY safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
GEMITROL NS SPRAY is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy. While animal studies have not shown embryotoxic or teratogenic potential, adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking, and some animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. For breastfeeding mothers, it is not known if calcitonin (salmon) is excreted into human breast milk, and in animals, it has been shown to decrease lactation and be excreted in milk. Therefore, nursing should typically not be undertaken while using this drug, and it should only be used if deemed necessary by a physician after careful consideration of benefits and risks.
Can GEMITROL NS SPRAY be taken with other medications?
It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbs, and supplements, as GEMITROL NS SPRAY can interact with certain medicines. Concomitant use with lithium may lead to a reduction in plasma lithium concentrations, requiring a dosage adjustment for lithium. Other medications for osteoporosis (like bisphosphonates) and certain antiarrhythmic medicines (like digoxin) may also interact.
What precautions should be taken when using GEMITROL NS SPRAY?
Before starting treatment, inform your doctor about any medical conditions, sensitivities, or medications you are taking. It is specifically intended for postmenopausal women and is not recommended for other populations. A skin test may be performed to check for calcitonin allergy. Caution is advised if you have low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia) or mineral metabolism disorders, as these need to be corrected before starting the spray, and calcium and vitamin D supplementation may be recommended. Regular nasal examinations are recommended, and the spray should be temporarily interrupted or discontinued if severe nasal irritation, ulceration, or nosebleeds occur. This medicine may cause transient dizziness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
What happens if a dose of GEMITROL NS SPRAY is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should GEMITROL NS SPRAY be stored?
Unopened bottles of GEMITROL NS SPRAY should be stored in a refrigerator between 2-8°C. Once opened, the bottle should be stored at room temperature (15-30°C) in an upright position and must be discarded after 30 doses or 30 to 35 days, even if some medicine remains. It should not be frozen. Before administration, allow the refrigerated spray to reach room temperature.
