Frequently asked questions
What is Pataday Eye Drop used for?
Pataday Eye Drop is primarily used to relieve eye itching and redness caused by allergies, including symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis (pink eye). It effectively addresses eye allergies triggered by substances like pollen, ragweed, grass, animal hair, and dander.
How does Pataday Eye Drop work?
Pataday Eye Drop contains olopatadine, which acts as both an antihistamine and a mast cell stabilizer. It works by blocking histamine, a natural chemical released by the body during an allergic reaction, which causes symptoms like itching and redness. It also helps prevent mast cells from releasing other inflammatory substances.
What is the usual dosage of Pataday Eye Drop?
The recommended dosage for Pataday Eye Drop (olopatadine ophthalmic solution 0.2%, often referred to as Pataday Once Daily Relief) is one drop in each affected eye once a day. Different concentrations of Pataday (e.g., 0.1%, 0.7%) may have varying dosing instructions, such as twice daily or once daily for up to 24-hour relief. Always follow your doctor's instructions or the directions on the label for your specific Pataday product.
What are the possible side effects of Pataday Eye Drop?
Common side effects can include headache, blurred vision, burning or stinging in the eye, dry eyes, a feeling as if something is in the eye, and an unusual or unpleasant taste in the mouth. Less common side effects may include back pain, cold-like symptoms, or nausea. Serious allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical attention if symptoms such as rash, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, or trouble breathing occur.
Is Pataday Eye Drop safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pataday Eye Drop is classified as Pregnancy Category C. It should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit to the mother justifies the potential risk to the fetus, as animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity. It is unknown if olopatadine passes into human breast milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. It's advisable to consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can Pataday Eye Drop be taken with other medications?
When using other eye products, you should wait at least 5 minutes between applying Pataday Eye Drop and the other medication to ensure proper absorption of each product. Eye ointments should generally be applied last. While few significant drug interactions are expected with ophthalmic medications, it is always best to inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products you are using.
What precautions should be taken when using Pataday Eye Drop?
For topical ocular use only; do not inject or take orally. To prevent contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye or surrounding areas. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 10 to 15 minutes before reinserting them. Do not use Pataday to treat irritation caused by contact lenses, or if your eyes are red due to contact lens wear. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
What happens if a dose of Pataday Eye Drop is missed?
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Pataday Eye Drop be stored?
Pataday Eye Drop should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, typically between 2°C and 25°C (36°F and 77°F), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze the medicine. Discard the bottle approximately 4 weeks after opening to maintain sterility. Keep this and all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.
