LORVAS by TORRENT PHARMACEUTICALS LTD

Name: LORVAS (Brand Name), Indapamide (Common Name)

Composition: LORVAS contains Indapamide as its active ingredient, typically available in strengths of 1.5 mg and 2.5 mg. Indapamide is a non-thiazide indole derivative of chlorosulphonamide.

Uses: LORVAS is a diuretic ("water pill") primarily prescribed for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to reduce excess fluid levels in the body (edema) associated with conditions such as heart failure, liver, kidney, or lung disease. By increasing the excretion of sodium and water through urine, it helps to lower blood pressure and reduce fluid retention.

Dosage and Administration: The typical adult dosage for hypertension is one sustained-release tablet (e.g., 1.5 mg or 2.5 mg) once daily, preferably in the morning. For edema, a starting dose of 2.5 mg once daily may be increased to 5 mg daily after one week if needed. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed. LORVAS can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea, gastrointestinal symptoms, muscle cramps, skin rash, dry mouth, increased urination.
  • Serious: Electrolyte imbalances (e.g., low potassium, low sodium), severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome), irregular heartbeat, severe abdominal and back pain due to inflamed pancreas, hepatic encephalopathy, and inflammation of the liver.

Precautions:

  • Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase dizziness and risk of low blood pressure.
  • Use with caution in patients with severe kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, gout, or lupus erythematosus.
  • Regular monitoring of blood pressure and electrolyte levels is necessary during treatment.
  • May cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Inform your doctor about all existing medical conditions and current medications to avoid potential interactions.
  • May increase skin sensitivity to sunlight.

Storage: Store LORVAS in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, at room temperature (10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC). Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about Lorvas by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd.:

What is Lorvas used for?

Lorvas is primarily used to control high blood pressure (hypertension) and to manage excess fluid levels in the body, also known as edema. Edema can be associated with conditions such as heart failure and certain liver or kidney disorders. It also helps prevent complications related to high blood pressure, like stroke and heart attack.

How does Lorvas work?

Lorvas contains Indapamide, which is a thiazide-like diuretic. It works by increasing the production of urine, which helps eliminate excess salt and water from your body. This process reduces fluid buildup and subsequently lowers blood pressure. It achieves this by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions in the kidneys. Over time, it also helps relax blood vessels, improving blood flow.

What is the usual dosage of Lorvas?

For adults, the usual starting dose of Lorvas is typically 1.25 mg to 2.5 mg, taken once daily in the morning. Your doctor will determine the exact dosage based on your individual condition and how you respond to the medicine. It's crucial to always follow the prescribed dosage and never exceed it without consulting your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of Lorvas?

Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, fatigue or weakness, increased urination, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, and constipation. Less common or more severe side effects can include skin rashes, skin allergies, and in rare cases, irregular heartbeats, low potassium or sodium levels, and dehydration.

Is Lorvas safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Lorvas is generally not recommended during pregnancy. It is advised to use it cautiously after discussing potential risks and benefits with your doctor, or to inform your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking this medicine. For breastfeeding mothers, Lorvas is considered probably unsafe as the active ingredient can pass into breast milk and may affect the newborn. Breastfeeding is generally not advisable while on this medication.

Can Lorvas be taken with other medications?

Lorvas can interact with several other medications. Combining it with other blood pressure-lowering drugs may lead to excessively low blood pressure. Taking it with other diuretics can increase the risk of dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. It can also increase lithium levels, potentially leading to toxicity, and may decrease the effectiveness of corticosteroids. Additionally, NSAIDs may reduce its effectiveness, and potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics can cause high potassium levels. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while taking Lorvas?

You should avoid Lorvas if you are allergic to Indapamide or sulfa medications. Caution is advised for individuals with kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, gout, heart rhythm problems, or a history of penicillin or sulphonamide allergy. Lorvas may cause dizziness or fatigue, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. Limiting alcohol consumption is recommended as it can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects and increase dizziness or dehydration. Regular monitoring of blood pressure and electrolyte levels is important. Do not stop taking Lorvas without consulting your doctor. It's also advisable to maintain a low-salt diet.

What happens if a dose of Lorvas is missed?

If you miss a dose of Lorvas, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Lorvas be stored?

Lorvas should be stored in a closed container, away from direct light and moisture. The ideal storage temperature should not exceed 30°C. Ensure the medicine is kept out of reach of children. Always check the expiry date before taking the medication.
