Frequently asked questions
Yaz Tablet, a combined oral contraceptive by Bayer Zydus Pharma Pvt. Ltd., is a medication used for several purposes related to women's health. Below are some frequently asked questions about Yaz, along with their concise answers.
What is Yaz Tablet used for?
Yaz Tablet is primarily used to prevent pregnancy. Additionally, it is prescribed for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in women who also desire oral contraception, and for managing symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women who choose oral contraceptives as their birth control method.
How does Yaz Tablet work?
Yaz Tablet contains two hormones, drospirenone (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). These hormones work together to prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). They also thicken the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg, and thin the lining of the uterus to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting. For PMDD, it helps by balancing hormone levels to reduce symptoms, and for acne, it lowers testosterone levels, which reduces oil production and clogged pores.
What is the usual dosage for Yaz Tablet?
A Yaz pack typically contains 28 tablets: 24 active light pink tablets and 4 inactive white placebo tablets. The usual dosage is one active pink tablet taken daily for 24 consecutive days, followed by one white placebo tablet daily for the next 4 days. It is crucial to take the tablets at the same time each day, in the order directed on the blister pack.
What are the possible side effects of Yaz Tablet?
Common mild side effects can include headaches, nausea, breast pain or tenderness, mood changes (including depression), irregular periods (such as spotting or breakthrough bleeding), fatigue, and weight gain. More serious but less common side effects can involve an increased risk of blood clots, high blood pressure, elevated potassium levels, liver problems, and migraines.
Is Yaz Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Yaz Tablet should not be used by women who are pregnant or suspect they might be pregnant. It is also not recommended for use during breastfeeding, as it may decrease the amount and quality of breast milk.
Can Yaz Tablet be taken with other medications?
Yaz can interact with certain other medications, which may reduce its effectiveness or increase the risk of side effects. These include some antibiotics, antifungal medicines, HIV and hepatitis C virus treatments, certain epilepsy medications (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine, topiramate), and some blood pressure medications (e.g., potassium-sparing diuretics like spironolactone). Products containing St. John's wort can also decrease Yaz's effectiveness. Additionally, grapefruit juice and vitamin C supplements may increase the levels of Yaz in your system, potentially leading to more side effects.
What precautions should be taken while using Yaz Tablet?
Yaz is generally not recommended for women over 35 years of age who smoke, due to a significantly increased risk of serious cardiovascular events like blood clots, heart attack, or stroke. It should also be avoided by individuals with certain medical conditions, including kidney, liver, or adrenal disease; a history of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, or certain hormone-sensitive cancers (like breast cancer); or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
What happens if a dose of Yaz Tablet is missed?
The instructions for a missed dose vary depending on when and which type of tablet was missed. If one active pink tablet is missed, take it as soon as you remember, and then take your next tablet at the regular time, even if it means taking two tablets in one day. Usually, no additional backup birth control is needed in this specific case. If multiple active tablets are missed, or if tablets are missed during certain weeks of the cycle, specific instructions must be followed, and a backup contraceptive method may be required for 7 days. If you miss any of the white (inactive) tablets, simply discard them and continue with your next pack as usual. If you miss your period twice in a row, consult your doctor for a pregnancy test.
How should Yaz Tablet be stored?
Yaz Tablet should be stored at or below 30°C (86°F) in its original carton to protect it from heat, moisture, and direct light. It should always be kept out of the reach of children.
