Composition: Each tablet contains:
- Empagliflozin: 25 mg
- Sitagliptin: 100 mg
Uses: EMPAGLYDE S 25MG Tablet is primarily used for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps lower and maintain blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are insufficient. Consistent use can help reduce the risk of serious diabetes-related complications such as nerve damage, kidney problems, and heart issues.
Dosage and Administration: This medicine should be taken in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food, but it is generally recommended to take it at a fixed time each day for consistent blood sugar control. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not chew, crush, or break it. Do not stop taking the medicine without your doctor's advice, as diabetes is a long-term condition requiring ongoing care.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include:
- Urinary tract infection (UTI)
- Fungal infection (including genital fungal infections)
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Headache
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if taken with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol, or if meals are delayed or missed.
Precautions:
- EMPAGLYDE S 25MG Tablet is not recommended for people with Type 1 diabetes or those with a history of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- Inform your doctor if you have a history of kidney or liver problems, urinary tract infections, or heart conditions.
- Use with caution in older adults and in those who are dehydrated or on diuretics, as it may increase the risk of low blood pressure.
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine, as it may be unsafe during these periods.
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it can lower blood sugar and increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Carry sugar candy or sweet juices to manage symptoms of low blood sugar.
- Inform your doctor if you are taking any other diabetes medicines, especially insulin or sulfonylureas, to avoid the risk of hypoglycemia.
- If you plan to undergo surgery or any major procedure, inform your doctor in advance.
Storage: Store below 30°C.
Frequently asked questions
What is Empaglyde S 25mg used for?
EMPAGLYDE S 25mg Tablet is primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps lower blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient. This medicine is also used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. Additionally, it helps lower the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in patients with heart failure, and slows the worsening of kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression.
How does Empaglyde S 25mg work?
EMPAGLYDE S 25mg contains Empagliflozin, which belongs to a class of medications called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which is responsible for reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream. By inhibiting SGLT2, Empagliflozin causes the kidneys to remove excess glucose from the body through urine, thus lowering blood sugar levels. This mechanism of action is independent of insulin. Empagliflozin also has diuretic and natriuretic effects, which can reduce blood volume and blood pressure, contributing to its cardiovascular and renal benefits.
What is the usual dosage?
The usual starting dose for empagliflozin (the active ingredient in Empaglyde S 25mg) for type 2 diabetes is typically 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust the dose as needed, and it can be increased to 25 mg once a day for those who tolerate the 10 mg dose and require tighter glycemic control. For heart failure or chronic kidney disease, the recommended dose is often 10 mg once daily. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food, but it's recommended to take it at the same time each day.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of empagliflozin include genital mycotic infections (yeast infections in both men and women), urinary tract infections (UTIs), frequent urination, increased thirst, and low blood pressure (hypotension), which can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting.
Serious, but less common, side effects include diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition with high ketone levels in the blood), acute kidney injury, Fournier gangrene (a rare but severe bacterial infection of the genital area), and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Empagliflozin is generally not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to potential risks to the unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should talk to your doctor, who may suggest an alternative treatment.
It is also not usually recommended while breastfeeding because it is not known how much passes into breast milk, although it's unlikely to be in clinically important amounts. However, manufacturers advise against its use due to a theoretical risk to the infant's developing kidneys. Your doctor can help determine the best course of action.
Can it be taken with other medications?
Empagliflozin can interact with several medications. Combining it with diuretics ("water pills") can increase the risk of dehydration and lower blood pressure. When taken with insulin or other diabetes medications like sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) increases, and dosage adjustments of these other medicines may be necessary. It is generally safe to take with everyday painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products you are taking.
What precautions should be taken?
Before taking Empaglyde S 25mg, inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, a history of urinary tract infections, genital infections, or diabetic ketoacidosis. It's important to stay well-hydrated, especially during exercise or hot weather, as the medicine can cause dehydration. Be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar and how to treat them, especially if you are taking other diabetes medications. Your doctor may ask you to temporarily stop the medication before surgery or during periods of acute illness or fasting to reduce risks like ketoacidosis or acute kidney injury. Avoid excessive alcohol intake, as it can increase the risk of ketoacidosis and low blood sugar.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you miss a dose of Empaglyde S 25mg (empagliflozin), take it as soon as you remember, unless it is less than 12 hours until your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should it be stored?
Empaglyde S 25mg (empagliflozin) should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of reach of children. Do not use outdated medicine.
