Frequently asked questions

ALZOLAM 0.25MG TAB contains the active ingredient Alprazolam, which is a benzodiazepine.

What is Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet used for?

Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet is primarily used for the short-term relief of severe anxiety disorders and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. It can also be used to treat anxiety associated with depression. It is not recommended for mild anxiety caused by everyday stress.

How does Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet work?

Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet, containing Alprazolam, works by enhancing the activity of a natural chemical messenger in the brain called Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA acts as a natural nerve-calming agent, and by increasing its activity, Alprazolam helps to decrease abnormal and excessive excitement of nerve cells in the brain. This results in a calming effect, reducing anxiety and panic, and helping with relaxation and sleep.

What is the usual dosage of Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet?

The dosage of Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet must be individualized and carefully adjusted by a doctor. For adults, the initial dose is typically 0.25 to 0.5 mg, taken two or three times daily. The dose may be gradually increased by no more than 1 mg per day at intervals of 3 to 4 days, up to a maximum of 4 mg per day for anxiety disorders. For panic disorder, higher doses, sometimes up to 10 mg per day, may be needed in occasional patients. For elderly or debilitated patients, the usual starting dose is lower, typically 0.125 mg to 0.25 mg, two or three times daily, and may be increased gradually based on tolerance and response. Tablets should be taken whole and not chewed, crushed, or broken.

What are the possible side effects of Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet?

Common side effects often observed at the beginning of therapy include drowsiness and light-headedness, which usually disappear with continued medication. Other possible side effects can include depression, headache, confusion, dry mouth, constipation, fatigue, irritability, problems with coordination, blurred vision, changes in sex drive, and low blood pressure. If any side effects persist or worsen, medical advice should be sought.

Is Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet (Alprazolam) is generally not recommended during pregnancy (Pregnancy Category D), as safety in pregnancy has not been established and studies suggest an increased risk of congenital malformations, particularly during the first trimester. Use during later pregnancy can also cause problems in the newborn, such as sedation or withdrawal symptoms.

Alprazolam and its metabolites are secreted into breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding is generally not recommended while taking this medication as it may cause adverse effects in the baby, including sedation, poor feeding, and poor weight gain. A healthcare provider can discuss the benefits versus risks.

Can Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet be taken with other medications?

Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet should be used with caution as it can interact with various medications. It should not be taken with alcohol, opioid medications, or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants (including other benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, and some antihistamines), as this can increase the risk of severe drowsiness, breathing problems, coma, and death.

Certain antifungal medications (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole) and some antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin) can increase the levels of alprazolam in the body, leading to increased side effects. Other medications that can interact include certain antidepressants (e.g., fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, nefazodone), cimetidine, and ritonavir. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking.

What precautions should be taken?

Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet has a high potential for psychological and physical dependence, and misuse can lead to addiction, overdose, or death. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly or change the dose without consulting your doctor, as abrupt discontinuation can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms, including seizures.

Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication. Patients with a history of alcohol or drug abuse, depression, lung disease, kidney disease, or liver disease should use this medicine with caution and under strict medical supervision. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided as they can increase alprazolam levels in the body.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Always discuss missed doses with your healthcare provider.

How should Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet be stored?

Alzolam 0.25mg Tablet should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, typically between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep the medicine out of sight and reach of children and pets. Dispose of any unused or expired medication properly, for example, through a take-back program or by following specific disposal guidelines from your pharmacist.
