SULPITAC 400 Tablet

SULPITAC 400 is an antipsychotic medication manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. It is commonly available as Sulpitac 400 Tablet.

  • Composition Each tablet contains 400 mg of Amisulpride. Amisulpride is an atypical antipsychotic that works by modulating the action of certain chemical messengers, particularly dopamine, in the brain. It blocks specific dopamine receptors to correct overactivity and also affects other neurotransmitters like serotonin.

  • Uses SULPITAC 400 is primarily used for the treatment of schizophrenia, both acute and chronic forms. It helps manage positive symptoms like delusions and hallucinations, as well as negative symptoms such as emotional and social withdrawal. Additionally, it possesses anti-emetic properties and is used to prevent and treat postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV).

  • Dosage and Administration SULPITAC 400 can be taken with or without food. For doses exceeding 300 mg, it is often recommended to take half the dose in the morning and the other half in the evening. Typical dosages for schizophrenia range from 400-800 mg daily, divided into two doses, with a maximum of 1.2 g daily. For predominantly negative symptoms, lower doses of 50-300 mg daily may be prescribed. It should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. Abrupt discontinuation of the medication should be avoided as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms or worsening of the condition.

  • Side Effects Common side effects include dry mouth, constipation, weight gain, decreased blood pressure (leading to dizziness), involuntary muscle contractions (dystonia), restlessness (akathisia), parkinsonism-like symptoms, increased prolactin levels in the blood, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, insomnia, anxiety, agitation, and drowsiness. Serious but less common side effects can include Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (characterized by high fever and muscle stiffness), seizures, and QT prolongation (a heart rhythm disorder).

  • Precautions SULPITAC 400 is contraindicated in individuals with known allergy to Amisulpride, prolactin-dependent tumors (e.g., breast cancer, pituitary tumors), or pheochromocytoma. It is not recommended for children under 18 years of age. Caution is advised in elderly patients due to an increased risk of severe adverse effects. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor, as it is generally not recommended during pregnancy and unsafe during breastfeeding. Patients should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery due to potential dizziness and drowsiness. Alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment. Exercise caution if you have kidney or liver problems, Parkinson's disease, heart conditions (especially those causing QT prolongation), diabetes, or low potassium levels. It should not be taken with Levodopa, a medication for Parkinson's disease.

  • Storage Store SULPITAC 400 Tablets in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of reach of children. The medicine should be stored below 30°C.

Frequently asked questions

Here are frequently asked questions about SULPITAC 400 by SUN PHARMA VV, containing Amisulpride:

1. What is SULPITAC 400 used for?

SULPITAC 400 is an atypical antipsychotic primarily used to treat schizophrenia, a mental disorder characterized by disturbed thoughts, feelings, and behavior, including hallucinations and delusions. It is effective for both acute and chronic forms of schizophrenia, addressing both positive symptoms (like delusions and hallucinations) and negative symptoms (like emotional withdrawal). Additionally, it is used to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting.

2. How does SULPITAC 400 work?

SULPITAC 400 contains Amisulpride, which works by blocking specific dopamine receptors (D2 and D3) in the brain. This action helps to regulate dopamine activity, a chemical messenger responsible for mood and behavior, thereby improving the thoughts and behavior of patients with schizophrenia. For nausea and vomiting, it blocks D2 receptors located in the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the brain responsible for inducing these sensations.

3. What is the usual dosage for SULPITAC 400?

The dosage of SULPITAC 400 can vary based on the patient's condition and the doctor's assessment. For schizophrenia, a common dosage ranges from 400 mg to 800 mg daily, typically in two divided doses. In some cases, a daily dose of up to 1200 mg may be prescribed. For patients experiencing predominantly negative symptoms, a lower dose of 50-300 mg daily might be used. It is usually taken orally, and often advised to be taken before food. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and duration for you.

4. What are the possible side effects of SULPITAC 400?

Common side effects of SULPITAC 400 can include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, weight gain, decreased blood pressure, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision, insomnia, and erectile dysfunction. It may also increase prolactin levels in the blood, potentially leading to symptoms like irregular or missed menstrual periods, unusual breast milk production, and breast pain or enlargement. More serious but less common side effects include involuntary muscle movements (dystonia, akathisia, parkinsonism), seizures, and rarely, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

5. Is SULPITAC 400 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

SULPITAC 400 is generally not recommended during pregnancy and is contraindicated in women planning pregnancy. If taken during the last trimester of pregnancy, babies may experience side effects such as muscle stiffness and drowsiness. It is considered unsafe for breastfeeding mothers as it may pass into breast milk. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as they will weigh the benefits against the potential risks.

6. Can SULPITAC 400 be taken with other medications?

Caution is advised when taking SULPITAC 400 with other medications. It should not be taken with Levodopa, a medicine for Parkinson's disease, as they have opposing effects. Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including other antipsychotics, antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, sedatives, heart medicines, antimalarial drugs, and antihistamines, as interactions can occur. Alcohol should be avoided while taking SULPITAC 400 as it can worsen side effects like dizziness and drowsiness.

7. What precautions should be taken while using SULPITAC 400?

Before taking SULPITAC 400, inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions, including diabetes, kidney or liver disease, Parkinson's disease, heart problems (especially heart rhythm disorders or risk of blood clots), epilepsy or seizure disorders, breast cancer, pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor), or pituitary gland prolactinoma. Due to potential dizziness and drowsiness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you understand how the medicine affects you. Do not stop taking the medication abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this can worsen your symptoms or cause withdrawal effects.

8. What happens if a dose of SULPITAC 400 is missed?

If you miss a dose of SULPITAC 400, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

9. How should SULPITAC 400 be stored?

SULPITAC 400 should be stored in a cool, dry place, typically at room temperature (between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30°C). Keep it away from direct sunlight and moisture, and ensure it is out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the medicine past its expiry date.
