Description

FREXT 100 Tablet

FREXT 100 Tablet, manufactured by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is an antidepressant belonging to the class of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).

Composition Each tablet contains Fluvoxamine Maleate 100 mg as the active ingredient.

Uses FREXT 100 Tablet is primarily prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Depression (major depressive episode), characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which involves recurrent unwanted thoughts (obsessions) leading to repetitive behaviors (compulsions). It is also used for social anxiety disorder and panic attacks.

Dosage and Administration FREXT 100 Tablet should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. The typical adult starting dose is 50 mg as a single dose at bedtime, with a usual range of 100 to 300 mg per day. Doses exceeding 100 mg daily are often given in two divided doses, with the larger portion taken at bedtime. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not crushed, chewed, or broken. It can be taken with or without food, but avoid taking it with fruit juice as it may reduce absorption. Do not stop the medication suddenly, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms; a gradual dose reduction under medical supervision is recommended. It may take a few weeks to notice an improvement.

Side Effects Common side effects include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, indigestion, loss of appetite
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue
  • Nervousness, anxiety, agitation, difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • Dry mouth, increased sweating
  • Tremors, muscle weakness (asthenia)
  • Decreased sexual desire, delayed ejaculation, erectile dysfunction

Serious side effects, though less common, can include increased suicidal thoughts, mania, bleeding problems, convulsions (seizures), visual problems, and low sodium levels in the blood.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not take if allergic to fluvoxamine maleate or any other ingredients.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of low sodium levels, increased risk of bleeding, suicidal thoughts, liver problems, kidney problems, a family history of depressive disorder, intestinal ulcer, or glaucoma.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: FREXT 100 Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless considered absolutely necessary by a doctor.
  • Alcohol and Driving: Avoid consuming alcohol, as it may increase dizziness and drowsiness. Use caution when driving or operating machinery as it may cause dizziness or sleepiness.
  • Drug Interactions: Do not use within 14 days of starting or stopping Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) due to the risk of serious reactions. Inform your doctor about all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements (like St. John's Wort), and other antidepressants, as interactions can occur with substances such as cisapride, lithium, tryptophan, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, neuroleptics, methadone, mexiletine, phenytoin, carbamazepine, propranolol, and ropinirole. Smoking can also increase the metabolism of fluvoxamine.

Storage Store in a cool and dry place away from sunlight, preferably below 25°C or between 10°C to 25°C/below 30°C. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Store in its original packaging with the lid tightly closed.

Frequently asked questions

FREXT 100 TAB, which contains Fluvoxamine maleate, is primarily used to treat neurological diseases such as depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Depression is a mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest, while OCD involves excessive thoughts leading to repetitive behaviors.

How does FREXT 100 TAB work?

FREXT 100 TAB is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain. This increase in serotonin helps to improve mood, cognition, and memory, balancing excitatory responses in the body and providing relief from the symptoms of depression and OCD.

What is the usual dosage for FREXT 100 TAB?

The dosage of FREXT 100 TAB is determined by your doctor based on your medical condition. It's important to follow the prescribed dose and not take more than recommended, as an overdose may cause harmful side effects. This medicine should be taken as prescribed for as long as your doctor advises.

Is FREXT 100 TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Can FREXT 100 TAB be taken with other medications?

FREXT 100 TAB can interact with several other medications. It is not recommended for use with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) due to the risk of serotonin syndrome, a life-threatening condition.
