LIBRIUM 25 MG

Name:

  • Common Name: Chlordiazepoxide
  • Brand Name: Librium 25 mg

Composition: Librium 25 mg contains 25 mg of Chlordiazepoxide as its active ingredient. It also includes inactive ingredients such as corn starch, lactose, and talc. The gelatin capsule shells may contain methyl and propyl parabens and potassium sorbate, along with various dye systems.

Uses: Librium 25 mg belongs to the benzodiazepine class of medicines and is used for the following conditions:

  • Management of anxiety disorders, including severe anxiety.
  • Short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety.
  • Relief of acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms, such as agitation, tremors, and anxiety.
  • Preoperative apprehension and anxiety.
  • Short-term relief of muscle spasms.
  • Anxiety-causing insomnia or distress.

Dosage and Administration: Dosage should be individualized for maximum beneficial effects and should be taken as advised by a doctor.

  • Severe Anxiety: Typically, 20 mg or 25 mg, 3 or 4 times daily.
  • Alcohol Withdrawal: Initial suggested dose is 50 mg to 100 mg, followed by repeated doses as needed until agitation is controlled, up to a maximum of 300 mg per day. Dosage should then be reduced to maintenance levels.
  • Preoperative Apprehension and Anxiety: 5 mg to 10 mg orally, 3 or 4 times daily on days preceding surgery.
  • Geriatric or Debilitated Patients: Dosage should be limited to the smallest effective amount, usually 5 mg, 2 to 4 times daily, or 10 mg or less per day initially, increased gradually as needed.
  • Pediatric Patients (6 years and older): 5 mg, 2 to 4 times daily (may be increased to 10 mg, 2 to 3 times daily). Not recommended for children under 6 years of age. Librium can be taken with or without food, but it is advised to take it at the same time each day. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly without consulting a doctor, as it can lead to withdrawal symptoms.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Lightheadedness, drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, fatigue, balance disorder, unsteadiness, uncoordinated body movements, confusion, sleepiness, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, constipation, swelling, skin rash, irregular menstrual periods, and headache.
  • Serious Side Effects: Profound respiratory depression, coma, death (especially with concomitant opioid use), addiction, abuse, misuse, physical dependence, paradoxical reactions (e.g., excitement, stimulation, acute rage), suicidal thoughts, severe sedation, withdrawal symptoms (convulsions, tremors, agitation, hallucinations), muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, upper stomach pain, dark urine, and yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).

Precautions:

  • Dependency and Withdrawal: Chlordiazepoxide has a high potential for habit-forming and can cause physical and psychological dependence. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms.
  • Concomitant Use with Opioids and CNS Depressants: Concomitant use with opioids, alcohol, or other central nervous system depressants can result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. Avoid concurrent use if possible, and limit dosages and duration to the minimum required if co-administration is necessary.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy, especially the first trimester, due to an increased risk of congenital malformations. It is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk.
  • Impaired Mental Alertness: May impair the ability to perform hazardous tasks such as driving or operating machinery due to drowsiness, impaired concentration, and blurred vision.
  • Renal and Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution in patients with severe kidney or liver disease.
  • Depression: Use with caution in patients with depression, especially if there is a risk of suicidal ideation.
  • Porphyria: Use caution as chlordiazepoxide has been rarely associated with exacerbation of porphyria.
  • Children: Not recommended for pediatric patients under 6 years of age.

Storage: Store Librium 25 mg capsules at room temperature, between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep them in a tightly closed container and away from light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not keep outdated medicine.

Frequently asked questions

What is Librium 25 MG used for?

Librium 25 MG, which contains the active ingredient chlordiazepoxide, is primarily used for the short-term management of severe anxiety. It is also prescribed to treat symptoms associated with acute alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasms, anxiety-causing insomnia, and to reduce apprehension and anxiety before surgery.

How does Librium 25 MG work?

Librium 25 MG belongs to a class of medicines called benzodiazepines. It works by increasing the activity of a natural chemical messenger in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). By enhancing GABA's inhibitory effects at GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system, Librium helps to suppress excessive and abnormal activity of nerve cells, leading to a calming, sedative, and muscle-relaxing effect.

What is the usual dosage for Librium 25 MG?

The dosage of Librium 25 MG can vary significantly based on the condition being treated and individual patient response. For severe anxiety, the typical adult dose is 20 mg or 25 mg, taken three or four times daily. For the relief of acute alcohol withdrawal symptoms, an initial dose of 50 mg to 100 mg may be given, followed by repeated doses as needed up to a maximum of 300 mg per day, after which the dosage is usually reduced to maintenance levels. In elderly or debilitated patients, a lower starting dose, such as 5 mg two to four times daily, is generally recommended.

What are the possible side effects of Librium 25 MG?

Common side effects of Librium 25 MG include lightheadedness, drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, fatigue, balance disorder, unsteadiness, confusion, and uncoordinated body movements. More serious side effects can include profound sedation, respiratory depression, and coma, especially when taken with certain other medications. If the medication is stopped suddenly after prolonged use, withdrawal symptoms such as seizures, tremors, and severe anxiety may occur.

Is Librium 25 MG safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Librium 25 MG is generally not recommended during pregnancy. Studies have suggested an increased risk of congenital malformations, particularly if used during the first trimester. If taken during late pregnancy or for an extended period, it may cause withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. Similarly, Librium is probably unsafe during breastfeeding as it can pass into breast milk and potentially cause drowsiness or feeding difficulties in the baby. It is important to discuss medication use with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Can Librium 25 MG be taken with other medications?

Caution is strongly advised when taking Librium 25 MG with other medications. Concomitant use with opioids, alcohol, or other central nervous system (CNS) depressants (e.g., sleeping pills, certain antidepressants, muscle relaxants) can significantly increase the risk of profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. Librium may also interact with barbiturates, blood thinners, and MAO inhibitors. Always inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking to avoid potentially dangerous interactions.

What precautions should be taken while taking Librium 25 MG?

It is crucial to avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants while taking Librium 25 MG. Due to the potential for drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired motor skills, you should not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you. Librium has a high potential for habit-forming, so it should only be taken as prescribed by your doctor, and you should not suddenly stop the medication without medical guidance to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms. Use with caution if you have kidney or liver disease, certain psychiatric disorders, or a history of drug or alcohol abuse.

What happens if a dose of Librium 25 MG is missed?

If you miss a dose of Librium 25 MG, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects.

How should Librium 25 MG be stored?

Librium capsules should be stored at room temperature, typically between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep the medication in a tightly closed, light-resistant container and protect it from moisture and direct sunlight. Always store Librium and all medicines out of the reach of children to prevent accidental overdose.
