EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB: Detailed Product Description

  • Name: EmpaHope L 25 Tablet. It is manufactured by MACLEODS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD.

  • Composition: Each tablet contains a combination of Empagliflozin (25mg) and Linagliptin (5mg). Empagliflozin belongs to the SGLT-2 inhibitor class, which works by increasing the removal of glucose through urine. Linagliptin is a DPP-4 inhibitor that enhances insulin release and decreases glucose production by the liver.

  • Uses: EmpaHope L 25 Tablet is primarily used for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults, alongside a balanced diet and regular exercise, to improve blood sugar control. It also helps prevent serious diabetes complications like eyesight loss (retinopathy), kidney damage (nephropathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), diabetic foot ulcers, and delayed wound healing. Additionally, it may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease and is used to treat chronic kidney disease in adults with reduced kidney function.

  • Dosage and Administration: This medicine should be taken orally once daily, preferably at the same time each day, with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. Your doctor will determine the specific dose. It is crucial not to stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor, as abrupt cessation can lead to increased blood sugar levels and serious complications.

  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Frequent urination, dizziness, light-headedness, urinary tract infections, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), upper respiratory tract infections, genital fungal infection, cough, constipation, and nausea.
    • Serious (less common): Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), particularly when used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Diabetic ketoacidosis has been reported rarely with SGLT2 inhibitors.
  • Precautions:

    • Avoid if allergic to Empagliflozin, Linagliptin, or any other components.
    • Use with caution or avoid in patients with moderate to severe kidney or liver disease.
    • Alcohol consumption should be limited or avoided as it may increase the risk of side effects and blood sugar fluctuations.
    • Not recommended for Type 1 diabetes.
    • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor, as its use is generally not advised.
    • Patients should monitor their blood sugar levels regularly, stay well-hydrated, and practice good genital hygiene to prevent infections.
    • Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, dehydration, pancreatitis, low blood pressure, heart failure, or are taking diuretics.
  • Storage: Store EmpaHope L 25 Tablet at room temperature, away from moisture, excessive heat, and direct light. Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and do not use the medication past its expiration date. It should be stored below 25°C or 30°C.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB:

What is EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB used for?

EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It helps improve blood sugar (glucose) control, especially when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient. This medicine can also help prevent complications associated with diabetes, such as kidney damage, nerve problems, and eyesight loss.

How does EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB work?

This medication contains two active ingredients: Empagliflozin and Linagliptin. Empagliflozin works by increasing the removal of excess sugar from your body through the kidneys and urine. Linagliptin works by increasing the levels of natural substances called incretins, which help regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin release (especially after meals) and decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver.

What is the usual dosage for EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB?

The usual recommended starting dose is one tablet (10 mg empagliflozin/5 mg linagliptin) once daily in the morning, with or without food. The dose may be increased to 25 mg empagliflozin/5 mg linagliptin once daily if needed for additional blood sugar control and if tolerated. It is important to take this medicine at the same time each day as directed by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB?

Common side effects can include urinary tract infections, genital fungal infections (more common in those with a history of such infections or uncircumcised men), increased urination, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), cough, constipation, nausea, dizziness, and headache. Serious side effects can include ketoacidosis, dehydration, kidney problems, pancreatitis, and severe allergic reactions.

Is EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB is generally not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to potential harm to an unborn baby. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding, as it may pass into breast milk and potentially harm the baby. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss alternative diabetes treatments with your doctor.

Can EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB be taken with other medications?

Yes, but caution is advised. It's important to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are taking. Taking EMPAHOPE L with insulin or sulfonylureas may increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and a dose adjustment of these medications might be necessary. Co-administration with diuretics can increase the potential for volume depletion. Certain strong inducers of P-glycoprotein or CYP3A4 enzymes may reduce the effectiveness of linagliptin. Empagliflozin may also decrease lithium levels.

What precautions should be taken while using EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB?

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, a history of urinary tract infections, dehydration, pancreatitis, heart failure, or are on a low-salt diet. You should also monitor your blood sugar levels regularly and stay well-hydrated. Alcohol consumption should be limited as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar or dehydration. It is not for Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

What happens if a dose of EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB is missed?

If you miss a dose and it's 12 hours or more before your next scheduled dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it's less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

How should EMPAHOPE L 25MG TAB be stored?

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
