    • Brand Name: Vigamox® Sterile Ophthalmic Solution
    • Common Name: Moxifloxacin Ophthalmic Solution
  • Composition:

    • Active Ingredient: Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride 0.5% (equivalent to 5 mg/mL moxifloxacin base)
    • Inactive Ingredients: Boric acid, sodium chloride, and purified water. May also contain hydrochloric acid/sodium hydroxide to adjust pH.
  • Uses: Vigamox Sterile Ophthalmic Solution is a topical fluoroquinolone antibiotic indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections of the eye. It is primarily used for:

    • Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) caused by susceptible strains of various bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.
    • It may also be used for other bacterial eye infections like blepharitis, dacryocystitis, hordeolum, tarsadenitis, and keratitis (including corneal ulcer), as well as for preoperative and postoperative prophylaxis.
  • Dosage and Administration:

    • For bacterial conjunctivitis, instill one drop in the affected eye 3 times a day for 7 days.
    • For preoperative and postoperative prophylaxis, typically instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 5 times per day for 2 days before surgery, and 3 times a day for up to 14 days after surgery.
    • Patients should wash their hands thoroughly before use and avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface (including the eye) to prevent contamination.
    • If using other ophthalmic medications, administer them at least 5 minutes apart.
  • Side Effects: Most people do not experience significant side effects. Common ocular (eye-related) side effects (occurring in approximately 1%-6% of patients) include:

    • Conjunctivitis
    • Decreased visual acuity (blurred vision)
    • Dry eye
    • Keratitis
    • Ocular discomfort or pain
    • Ocular hyperemia (eye redness)
    • Ocular pruritus (itchy eyes)
    • Subconjunctival hemorrhage
    • Tearing (watery eyes) Non-ocular side effects (occurring in approximately 1%-4% of patients) may include fever, increased cough, infection, otitis media, pharyngitis, rash, and rhinitis.

Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention are rare but can include severe allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions such as swelling of the face, eyes, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing, rash, itching, or hives.

  • Precautions:

    • Hypersensitivity: Vigamox is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any components of the medication. Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions have been reported with systemic quinolones.
    • Topical Ophthalmic Use Only: This solution is for use in the eye only and should not be injected.
    • Contact Lenses: Patients should not wear contact lenses if they have signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis.
    • Contamination: Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination of the solution.
    • Overgrowth of Organisms: Prolonged use may lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
    • Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a doctor if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Storage: Store at room temperature, ideally between 2°C and 25°C (36°F and 77°F), away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Discard any unused portion 28 days after opening.

Frequently asked questions

VIGAMOX STERILE OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION is an antibiotic eye drop containing moxifloxacin, used to treat bacterial infections of the eye.

What is VIGAMOX used for?

VIGAMOX is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis, also known as "pink eye," and other bacterial eye infections such as keratitis, blepharitis, and corneal ulcers. It works by targeting and eliminating various types of bacteria responsible for these infections. It is not effective against viral or fungal eye infections.

How does VIGAMOX work?

VIGAMOX contains moxifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by inhibiting two essential bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, which are crucial for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and cell division. By blocking these enzymes, VIGAMOX effectively kills the bacteria and prevents them from multiplying, thus clearing the infection.

What is the usual dosage of VIGAMOX?

The typical dosage for VIGAMOX is one drop instilled into the affected eye(s) three times a day for seven days. It is important to complete the entire course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve sooner, to ensure the infection is fully eradicated and to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.

What are the possible side effects of VIGAMOX?

Most people do not experience severe side effects. Common ocular side effects, occurring in about 1-6% of patients, may include eye redness (ocular hyperemia), discomfort, pain, itching (ocular pruritus), dry eye, and temporary blurred vision. Rarely, more serious allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face or throat, rash, itching, or difficulty breathing, can occur. If any serious side effects or allergic reactions are noticed, discontinue use and seek immediate medical attention.

Is VIGAMOX safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: VIGAMOX is categorized as Pregnancy Category C. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Breastfeeding: It is not known if moxifloxacin passes into human milk after ophthalmic administration. However, systemic absorption from eye drops is very low, making significant effects on a breastfed infant unlikely. Caution should still be exercised when VIGAMOX is administered to a nursing mother.

Can VIGAMOX be taken with other medications?

Drug-drug interaction studies have not been specifically conducted for VIGAMOX ophthalmic solution. However, due to its low systemic absorption when applied topically to the eye, clinically significant drug interactions are unlikely. If you are using other eye medications, it is recommended to wait at least five minutes between applying VIGAMOX and other drops. Eye ointments should generally be applied last.

What precautions should be taken when using VIGAMOX?

VIGAMOX is for topical ophthalmic use only and should not be injected into the eye. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to your eye, fingers, or any other surface. Patients with bacterial conjunctivitis should avoid wearing contact lenses. Discontinue use immediately and contact your doctor if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction or if your symptoms worsen or do not improve after treatment. Prolonged use of VIGAMOX may lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi, or the development of resistant bacteria.

What happens if a dose of VIGAMOX is missed?

If you miss a dose of VIGAMOX, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should VIGAMOX be stored?

VIGAMOX should be stored at room temperature, typically between 2°C and 25°C (36°F and 77°F), away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and out of the reach of children. Any remaining medication should be discarded 28 days after opening the bottle.
