Description
SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablets
Name: Spenzo 0.5 mg Tablet (Brand name).
Composition: Each tablet contains Flupentixol Hydrochloride 0.5 mg, which is the active ingredient.
Uses: Spenzo 0.5 mg Tablet is primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia and other related chronic psychoses, particularly in patients whose main manifestations do not include excitement, agitation, or hyperactivity. It is also prescribed for depression and bipolar disorder. It works by balancing certain chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine, to improve mood, behavior, and thoughts, and can help prevent extreme mood swings and reduce agitation.
Dosage and Administration: Spenzo 0.5 mg Tablets are taken orally, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels in the body.
- Adults (Schizophrenia): The dosage should be individualized. An initial recommended dose for adults is two SPENZO 0.5 tablets (1 mg flupentixol) given three times daily. This may be increased by 1 mg every 2 to 3 days until psychotic symptoms are effectively controlled, up to a maximum daily dose of 18 mg (in 2-3 divided portions). The usual maintenance dosage is 3 to 6 mg daily in divided doses.
- Elderly Patients (above 65 years): The initial dose may need to be reduced to a quarter or half of the usual starting dose. The starting dose is usually 0.5mg daily, which may be increased to 1mg per day after one week, with a maximum daily dose of 2mg per day.
- It is crucial not to stop the medication suddenly without consulting a doctor, as it may worsen symptoms.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Sleepiness/drowsiness, dry mouth, orthostatic hypotension (sudden lowering of blood pressure on standing), abnormality of voluntary movements (such as muscle stiffness, tremors, restlessness, difficulty sitting or standing still), weight gain, increased prolactin level in blood, urinary retention, constipation, and muscle rigidity. Other reported common side effects include blurred vision, a faster heartbeat, confusion, changes to sex drive, and breast enlargement or problems with ejaculation/erections in men.
- Serious Side Effects: Seek immediate medical advice for allergic reactions like difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or severe itching. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a rare but potentially fatal complication characterized by hyperthermia, muscular rigidity, and fluctuating consciousness, has been reported with flupentixol.
Precautions:
- Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol is unsafe and should be avoided as it can worsen drowsiness and dizziness.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly necessary, and probably unsafe during breastfeeding. Consult a doctor.
- Driving and Operating Machinery: Spenzo 0.5 Tablet can cause dizziness and sleepiness; therefore, caution is advised when driving or performing tasks requiring concentration.
- Underlying Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with liver damage, kidney disease, severe cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, epilepsy, glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson's disease, thyroid, or prostate problems. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions or allergies.
- Abnormal Movements: Inform your doctor if you experience any abnormal movements, particularly of the face, lips, jaw, and tongue.
- Children and Adolescents: Not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs, as Spenzo can interact with medicines that change heartbeat, other antipsychotics, tricyclic antidepressants, barbiturates, anticoagulants, anticholinergic drugs, metoclopramide, and piperazine.
Storage: Store the tablets below 25°C. It should be stored in an airtight container away from moisture and heat. Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
What is SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet used for?
SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet is primarily used in the treatment of schizophrenia, a serious mental disorder that affects a person's thinking ability, feelings, and behavior. It may also be used to treat depression and bipolar disorder, helping to improve mood and reduce anxiety and tension.
How does SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet work?
SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet contains Flupenthixol, which belongs to a class of medications called typical antipsychotics. It works by blocking the effects of certain chemical messengers, particularly dopamine, in specific nerve pathways in the brain. By normalizing the levels of these chemicals, it helps restore the balance of nerve activity, thereby alleviating psychotic symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, and mood disturbances.
What is the usual dosage of SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet?
The dosage of SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet is individualized by a doctor based on the severity of symptoms and patient tolerance. For schizophrenia, the initial recommended dose for adults is typically 1 mg (two 0.5 mg tablets) three times daily, which can be increased if necessary. For depression with or without anxiety, an initial dose of 1 mg daily may be increased to a maximum of 3 mg daily. It should preferably be taken at the same time each day, with or without food. SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Elderly and debilitated patients may require a reduced initial dose.
What are the possible side effects of SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet?
Common side effects of SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet include sleepiness, dryness in the mouth, abnormality of voluntary movements (such as tremors, muscle stiffness, or restlessness), weight gain, increased prolactin level in the blood, urinary retention, and constipation. It can also cause orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing) and dizziness. More serious but rare side effects include Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), characterized by hyperthermia, muscular rigidity, and fluctuating consciousness. It's important to report any abnormal movements, especially of the face, lips, jaw, and tongue, to your doctor.
Is SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy as its safety has not been established and animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. It is also probably unsafe during breastfeeding, as limited human data suggests the drug may pass into breastmilk and harm the baby. Always consult your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet be taken with other medications?
Yes, SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet can interact with other medications. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including those that change the heartbeat (e.g., quinidine, amiodarone), other antipsychotics (e.g., risperidone, olanzapine), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), and barbiturates (e.g., amobarbitol). It may also reduce the efficacy of levodopa and increase adverse extrapyramidal symptoms with dopamine antagonists like metoclopramide.
What precautions should be taken while taking SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet?
Several precautions should be taken:
- Driving and Operating Machinery: This medicine can cause dizziness and sleepiness, so avoid driving or activities requiring concentration until you know how it affects you.
- Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol as it can worsen drowsiness and dizziness.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have liver, kidney, or heart problems, diabetes (as it can increase blood sugar), epilepsy, glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson's disease, thyroid problems, or prostate problems.
- Sudden Discontinuation: Do not stop taking SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet suddenly without consulting your doctor, as it can worsen symptoms or cause withdrawal effects like irritability, restlessness, or seizures.
- Abnormal Movements: Report any abnormal movements, particularly of the face, lips, jaw, and tongue, to your doctor.
- Weight, Blood Sugar, and Cholesterol: This medicine may increase weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, so regular monitoring is advised.
What happens if a dose of SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose of SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should SPENZO 0.5 MG Tablet be stored?
