Canesten V6 Tablet VT

Canesten V6 Tablet VT (also known as Canesten Vaginal Tablet or Candid V-6 Vaginal Tablet) is an antifungal medication primarily used for the treatment of fungal infections in the vagina.

  • Composition The active ingredient in Canesten V6 Tablet VT is Clotrimazole, typically at a strength of 100mg. Clotrimazole works by destroying the cell membrane of fungi, which inhibits their growth and ultimately kills them.

  • Uses Canesten V6 Tablet VT is prescribed to treat vaginal thrush (candidiasis), an infection of the vagina and/or vulva caused by the yeast germ candida. It helps alleviate associated symptoms such as itching, burning, irritation, white vaginal discharge, and soreness during sexual intercourse or urination. While primarily for vaginal use, clotrimazole can also treat other fungal infections like ringworm, athlete's foot, and fungal nappy rash.

  • Dosage and Administration This medicine is for vaginal insertion only. The typical dosage involves inserting one tablet daily for six successive days, preferably at night, or two tablets daily for three consecutive days. For best results, the tablet should be inserted as deeply as possible into the vagina, ideally using the provided applicator, while lying back with legs bent up. It is crucial to wash hands thoroughly before and after use and to complete the entire course of treatment even if symptoms improve.

  • Side Effects Common side effects may include a burning sensation, irritation, itching, redness, discomfort, and pain in the vagina, vulva, or lower abdomen. Other reported mild side effects include blisters, skin peeling, swelling, and changes in vaginal discharge or bleeding. In rare cases, more serious allergic reactions such as swelling of the lips, throat, or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, weakness, dizziness, low blood pressure, and rash can occur.

  • Precautions Canesten V6 Tablet VT is strictly for vaginal use and must not be swallowed. Treatment should be avoided during the menstrual period, and it is advisable to wait until menstruation has finished. During treatment, refrain from using tampons, other vaginal products, or spermicides. Sexual intercourse should also be avoided as the infection can spread, and the medication may weaken latex contraceptives like condoms and diaphragms, leading to contraceptive failure. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use, and if pregnant, the tablet should be inserted without an applicator. Medical advice should be sought if the patient is under 16 or over 60 years of age, has recurrent infections (more than twice in six months), a history of sexually transmitted diseases, or experiences unusual symptoms like irregular/bad-smelling vaginal discharge, fever, chills, lower abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. If symptoms do not improve within 3 days or worsen, consult a doctor.

  • Storage Store Canesten V6 Tablet VT below 25°C or 30°C in a cool and dry place, protected from sunlight and moisture. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

Canesten V6 Tablet (Clotrimazole 100mg) is an antifungal medication primarily used to treat vaginal fungal infections. Here are some frequently asked questions about this medicine:

What is Canesten V6 Tablet used for?

Canesten V6 Tablet is primarily used to treat vaginal fungal infections, often referred to as vaginal thrush or candidiasis. It helps alleviate symptoms such as itching, burning, redness, and abnormal discharge caused by an overgrowth of yeast, mainly Candida albicans, in the vaginal area.

How does Canesten V6 Tablet work?

Canesten V6 Tablet contains clotrimazole, an antifungal agent. It works by inhibiting the production of ergosterol, a vital component of fungal cell membranes. By damaging the fungal cell membrane, it disrupts the growth and reproduction of fungi, ultimately killing them and clearing the infection.

What is the usual dosage?

The typical dosage involves inserting one vaginal tablet as deeply as possible into the vagina once daily in the evening for six consecutive days. It is often recommended to do this at bedtime. It's crucial to complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve earlier.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects may include vaginal burning, itching, irritation, or redness at the application site. Other reported side effects can include abdominal cramps or pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin rash or hives, blisters, and skin peeling. If severe or persistent side effects occur, or if you experience symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, contact your doctor immediately.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Canesten V6 Tablet is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy, but it should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Pregnant women should insert the tablet without using an applicator. It is also considered safe to use while breastfeeding, as minimal amounts are likely to pass into breast milk.

Can it be taken with other medications?

Clotrimazole, the active ingredient, may interact with certain medications. For instance, it can increase the effects of warfarin (a blood thinner) and elevate the levels of tacrolimus and cyclosporine (immunosuppressants) in the body. It can also reduce the effectiveness of some contraceptives, such as latex condoms and diaphragms. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, you are taking.

What precautions should be taken?

Do not use Canesten V6 Tablet during your menstrual period, as the medicine may be washed off. Avoid using tampons, spermicides, or other vaginal products, and refrain from sexual intercourse during treatment to prevent further irritation or spread of the infection. The tablet is for vaginal use only and should not be swallowed. Consult your doctor if your symptoms do not improve within 3 days or if the infection recurs frequently.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, insert the next tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. If you have concerns, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

How should it be stored?

Canesten V6 Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, typically below 30°C or between 10°C and 25°C. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
