SCABOMA LOTION 100 ML by GLENMARK PHARMACEUTICALS LTD

Scaboma Lotion is an antiparasitic medication primarily used for the management of scabies and lice infestations. It is manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

  • Name:

    • Common Name: Lindane Lotion
    • Brand Name: Scaboma Lotion
  • Composition:

    • Active Ingredient: Lindane (Gamma Benzene Hexachloride) 1% w/v. Lindane is an organochlorine insecticide.
  • Uses: Scaboma Lotion is prescribed for the treatment of:

    • Scabies (infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei mites).
    • Pediculosis (infestation by head lice, body lice, and pubic lice, including their eggs/nits). It is often used when other safer treatment methods have failed or are contraindicated, due to potential toxicity.
  • Dosage and Administration:

    • For external use only.
    • Shake the bottle well before use.
    • For Scabies: Apply a thin layer from the neck down to the entire body, including non-affected skin areas, on clean, dry skin. Leave on for 8-12 hours, then thoroughly wash off with warm water. Often, a single application is sufficient, but if symptoms persist after 7 days, consult a doctor. Repeat use is generally not recommended.
    • For Head Lice: Apply to dry hair or affected skin areas until wet, leave on for 4-8 hours, and then thoroughly rinse off. Follow immediately with a lice comb to remove dead lice and eggs.
    • Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Wear gloves (nitrile, sheer vinyl, or latex with neoprene) when applying.
    • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, and other mucous membranes. In case of accidental contact, rinse immediately with water.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common Side Effects: Dry skin, skin rash, itching, burning sensation, skin irritation, redness, hair loss, tingling or pricking sensation (paresthesia), numbness, headache, drowsiness.
    • Serious Side Effects: Seizures (fits), skin blisters, neurotoxicity, anaphylaxis. If side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor.
  • Precautions:

    • Do not use in premature infants, individuals with seizure disorders or conditions that increase seizure risk (e.g., HIV infection, history of head trauma, CNS tumors, severe liver cirrhosis, alcoholism).
    • Avoid application on broken skin, open wounds, crusted scabies, severe skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema, as this increases systemic absorption and risk of side effects.
    • Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary and advised by a doctor.
    • Elderly individuals or those weighing less than 50 kg may be more sensitive to Lindane's effects.
    • Avoid sun exposure and use sunbeds/lamps while using this lotion as it can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing.
    • Do not leave on the skin for more than 8-12 hours to prevent increased risk of side effects, including seizures and death.
    • Avoid sharing clothes, towels, or bedding during treatment to prevent transmission.
  • Storage:

    • Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C, away from sunlight, moisture, and heat.
    • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
    • Do not use after the expiry date.
Frequently asked questions

SCABOMA LOTION 100 ML by GLENMARK PHARMACEUTICALS LTD is an antiparasitic medication used to treat certain skin conditions. It contains Lindane (Gamma Benzene Hexachloride) as its active ingredient.

What is Scaboma Lotion used for?

Scaboma Lotion is primarily used for the treatment of scabies, a skin infection caused by tiny mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) that infest and irritate the skin. It is also used to treat lice infestations, including head lice, body lice, and pubic lice.

How does Scaboma Lotion work?

The active ingredient, Lindane (Gamma Benzene Hexachloride), works by penetrating the skin and paralyzing and killing scabies mites, lice, and their eggs. It achieves this by disrupting their central nervous system, specifically by blocking gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-gated chloride channels, which leads to overstimulation and ultimately the death of the parasites.

What is the usual dosage for Scaboma Lotion?

Scaboma Lotion is typically applied as a single, thin layer to clean, dry skin from the neck down to the toes. It should be left on the skin for 8 to 12 hours and then thoroughly washed off with warm water. It is important not to leave the lotion on for more than 12 hours, as prolonged exposure can increase the risk of serious side effects. Reapplication is generally not recommended unless advised by a doctor, especially if symptoms persist or live mites/lice are still present after 7 days, due to the risk of toxicity.

What are the possible side effects of Scaboma Lotion?

Common side effects may include dry skin, skin rash, itching, burning sensation, tingling or pricking sensation (paresthesia), hair loss, headache, and drowsiness. More serious side effects, though rare, can include seizures, disorientation, dizziness, numbness, and tremors, especially with improper use or in susceptible individuals. If you experience any persistent or severe side effects, consult your doctor.

Is Scaboma Lotion safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Scaboma Lotion is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy as it is categorized as a Category C pregnancy drug, and animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. For breastfeeding women, a small amount of the medicine might pass into breast milk and could potentially cause adverse effects in the baby. Therefore, it is advised to consult a doctor before using Scaboma Lotion if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can Scaboma Lotion be taken with other medications?

Since Scaboma Lotion is applied topically, it is less likely to interact with systemic medications. However, caution should be exercised if you are taking medications for seizures (such as antipsychotics, antidepressants, theophylline, cyclosporine, etc.) as using Scaboma Lotion may increase the risk of seizures. It's also recommended to avoid using oil-based creams, ointments, lotions, or hair balms immediately before and after applying the lotion, as oils can enhance its absorption through the skin and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects. There is no known interaction between alcohol and Scaboma Lotion, but if you consume alcohol frequently, discuss it with your doctor.

What precautions should be taken when using Scaboma Lotion?

Scaboma Lotion is for external use only. Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, nose, and any broken, scratched, or eroded skin, or open wounds. It should not be used on premature infants, individuals with uncontrolled seizure disorders, HIV/AIDS, liver cirrhosis, excessive alcohol consumption, a history of head injury, or spinal cord or brain tumors, due to increased risk of systemic absorption and central nervous system toxicity. Do not apply more than the prescribed amount or use it more often than recommended, as this can increase the risk of serious side effects, including seizures and even death. Always wash your hands thoroughly after application, and use gloves if applying to another person. It is also important to wash all clothing, bedding, and towels used recently in hot water to prevent re-infestation.

What happens if a dose of Scaboma Lotion is missed?

Scaboma Lotion is typically applied as a single dose. Therefore, the concept of a "missed dose" usually does not apply. If a reapplication is considered, it should only be done under strict medical advice, as repeating the treatment too soon can lead to severe side effects.

How should Scaboma Lotion be stored?

Scaboma Lotion should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, ideally below 25°C or 30°C. Keep it out of sight and reach of children.
