Frequently asked questions
Valparin 200 MG Syrup, manufactured by Sanofi India Ltd, is an anticonvulsant medication primarily containing Sodium Valproate (200 mg/5ml). It is used to manage various neurological and mental health conditions.
What is Valparin 200 MG Syrup used for?
Valparin 200 MG Syrup is primarily used for the treatment of epilepsy, which involves controlling seizures. It is also used to manage manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder and for the prevention of migraine headaches.
How does Valparin 200 MG Syrup work?
Valparin 200 MG Syrup, with its active ingredient Sodium Valproate, works by increasing the levels of a neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This action helps to calm the brain by reducing the abnormal and excessive activity of nerve cells, thereby controlling seizures and stabilizing mood.
What is the usual dosage?
The dosage of Valparin 200 MG Syrup can vary depending on the patient's age, weight, gender, medical history, and the specific condition being treated. For seizure control, an initial daily dosage of 10-15mg/kg is often prescribed, which can then be titrated up to 20-30mg/kg. For treating mania, the initial dosage might be 600mg daily, increasing by 200mg/day at three-day intervals. It is crucial to follow the exact dosage and duration advised by your doctor, and to take the medicine regularly, preferably with or after food.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of Valparin 200 MG Syrup can include loss of appetite, drowsiness, weight gain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, tremor, blurred vision, and hair loss or changes in hair texture. Less common but severe side effects can include liver problems, pancreatitis, and an increased risk of suicidal thoughts. If any side effects persist or worsen, medical consultation is advised.
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Valparin 200 MG Syrup is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy as it can cause severe side effects, including birth defects and developmental problems in the baby. For breastfeeding mothers, it can be taken if clearly needed, but only after discussing the risks and benefits with a doctor, as very minor side effects for lactating mothers have been reported. Monitoring of the infant for any undesired effects is necessary.
Can it be taken with other medications?
Valparin 200 MG Syrup can interact with other medicines. For example, it should not be taken with erythromycin due to potential severe side effects. It may also increase the concentration of medicines like antipsychotics, MAO inhibitors, antidepressants, and benzodiazepines. Conversely, certain medications like lamotrigine can have increased concentrations when taken with Valparin, potentially causing serious skin reactions. Oral contraceptives may reduce the desired effect of Valparin. It is important to inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are currently taking to avoid possible interactions.
What precautions should be taken?
Patients with pre-existing conditions like depression, liver disease, pancreatitis, bleeding disorders, or suicidal thoughts should use Valparin with caution or avoid it. It is not safe to drive or operate heavy machinery if you experience drowsiness or dizziness. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase the risk of side effects. Regular monitoring of blood cell counts and liver function is recommended. Do not stop the medication suddenly, as it can increase the frequency of seizures.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If a dose of Valparin 200 MG Syrup is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should it be stored?
Valparin 200 MG Syrup should be stored below 30°C. Keep it in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of the sight and reach of children.
