Name:

  • Brand Name: VALANCE 250 MG SOLUTION 100ML
  • Common Name: Divalproex Sodium (or Valproic Acid)

Composition: Each 5ml of VALANCE Solution contains Divalproex Sodium equivalent to 250 mg of Valproic Acid.

Uses: VALANCE Solution is an anticonvulsant primarily used for:

  • Epilepsy/Seizures: Monotherapy and adjunctive therapy for complex partial seizures, simple and complex absence seizures, and other seizure types, including generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Management of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder, helping to stabilize mood.
  • Migraine Prophylaxis: Prevention of migraine headaches.

Dosage and Administration: VALANCE Solution is an oral solution. It should be taken by mouth as directed by a physician. The bottle should be shaken well before each use. It is generally advised to take the medicine with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Dosage is individualized based on medical condition, age, and response to treatment. It is crucial to take this medicine regularly at the same time each day and not to stop it suddenly, as this may trigger seizures.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, sleepiness/drowsiness, tremor, weight gain, hair loss, stomach pain, diarrhea, blurred vision, double vision, problems with walking or coordination, increased or loss of appetite, constipation, skin rash, weakness, and irregular menstrual periods.
  • Serious Side Effects: Pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting), liver damage, bleeding problems, high ammonia levels in the blood (fatigue, vomiting, mental status changes), low body temperature, and allergic reactions (fever, rash, swelling). Rarely, it may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts.

Precautions:

  • Contraindications: VALANCE is not recommended for individuals with a known allergy to Divalproex or its ingredients, active and/or severe liver disease, urea cycle disorders, or porphyria.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use with caution during pregnancy as there may be a risk to the baby; effective contraception is recommended for women of childbearing age. It is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it passes into breast milk and may affect the infant.
  • Other Warnings: Use with caution in patients with kidney problems, systemic lupus erythematosus, depression, suicidal thoughts, or bleeding disorders. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Caution is advised when driving or operating heavy machinery due to potential drowsiness or dizziness. Inform your doctor about all existing medical conditions and other medications to avoid potential drug interactions.

Storage: Store VALANCE 250 MG SOLUTION 100ML at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and out of the reach of children. Do not store it in the bathroom due to humidity.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about VALANCE 250 MG SOLUTION 100ML, which contains Valproic Acid as its active ingredient.

What is Valance 250 MG Solution used for?

Valance 250 MG Solution (Valproic Acid) is primarily used to treat various types of seizures associated with epilepsy, including complex partial seizures, simple and complex absence seizures, and as an adjunctive therapy for patients with multiple seizure types. It is also used to manage the manic phase of bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) and to help prevent migraine headaches.

How does Valance 250 MG Solution work?

Valproic acid, the active ingredient in Valance, works through several mechanisms in the brain to control seizures and stabilize mood. Its primary actions include increasing the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps calm overactive nerve cells. It also blocks voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels, which reduces neuronal excitability and stabilizes nerve cell membranes. Additionally, it inhibits histone deacetylases (HDACs), contributing to its therapeutic effects.

What is the usual dosage of Valance 250 MG Solution?

The dosage of Valance 250 MG Solution is determined by a doctor based on body weight and the specific condition being treated. For seizures in adults and children 10 years and older, the initial dose is typically 10 to 15 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) of body weight per day. This dose may be gradually increased by 5 to 10 mg/kg per week, usually not exceeding 60 mg/kg per day. If the total daily dose is greater than 250 mg, it is usually divided into two or more smaller doses throughout the day. For bipolar disorder or migraine prevention, doses can vary, and your doctor will start with a low dose and gradually increase it.

What are the possible side effects of Valance 250 MG Solution?

Common side effects of Valance may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, tremors, weight changes, and hair loss.

Serious side effects can occur and require immediate medical attention. These include:

  • Liver problems: Symptoms like abdominal pain, dark urine, yellow eyes or skin (jaundice), decreased appetite, fever, itching, or unusual tiredness.
  • Pancreatitis: Sudden and severe stomach pain (which may spread to the back), chills, nausea, vomiting, or fever.
  • Blood problems: Unusual bruising or bleeding, fever, sore throat, or small red or purple spots on the skin.
  • Allergic reactions: Hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or throat.
  • Changes in mood or behavior: Agitation, irritability, new or worsening depression, or suicidal thoughts.
  • Hyperammonemic encephalopathy: Unusual drowsiness, confusion, vomiting, or low body temperature.
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and menstrual disorders have been observed in women treated with valproic acid.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Valance (valproic acid) is generally not recommended during pregnancy due to a significant risk of birth defects and developmental problems in the unborn child, including neural tube defects, heart defects, cleft lip, and lower intelligence. For women of childbearing potential, it is contraindicated unless there is no suitable alternative and a pregnancy prevention program is in place, including effective contraception. If you become pregnant while taking Valance, it is crucial to contact your doctor immediately but not to stop the medication without medical advice, as this could worsen your condition.

Breastfeeding: Valproic acid passes into breast milk in very small amounts and usually does not cause side effects in breastfed babies. However, infants should be monitored for potential liver toxicity (e.g., jaundice, unusual bruising or bleeding). Discuss breastfeeding with your healthcare provider to weigh the benefits and risks.

Can it be taken with other medications?

Valance (valproic acid) can interact with many other medications, and these interactions can be significant. It can affect the levels of other anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, and lamotrigine, potentially requiring dosage adjustments. Valproic acid can also interact with blood thinners like warfarin and aspirin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Other medications, including certain antibiotics (carbapenems), antidepressants, and CNS depressants (like alcohol), can also interact. Always inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

What precautions should be taken?

  • Liver and Pancreatic Monitoring: Regular monitoring of liver function tests and pancreatic enzymes is recommended, especially during the initial months of treatment, due to the risk of serious liver damage and pancreatitis.
  • Suicidal Thoughts: Valproic acid may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior. Report any new or worsening mood changes to your doctor.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: Valance can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness.
  • Urea Cycle Disorders/Mitochondrial Disorders: Valance is contraindicated in patients with known urea cycle disorders or certain mitochondrial disorders due to increased risks of serious adverse effects.
  • Weight Gain: Weight gain is a possible side effect, and monitoring your weight is advisable.
  • Bone Health: Long-term use may affect bone density, increasing the risk of fractures.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of Valance 250 MG Solution, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects. If you have epilepsy, missing doses can trigger a seizure, so it's important to take the medicine regularly.

How should it be stored?

Valance 250 MG Solution should be stored as directed by your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Typically, oral solutions containing valproic acid should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and direct heat. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.
