Name
Common Name: Vaxiboon 23 Injection Brand Name: VAXIBOON 23 INJ
Composition
VAXIBOON 23 INJ contains Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (25mcg). It is formulated from purified capsular polysaccharides of 23 prevalent or invasive types of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Each 0.5 mL dose is a sterile, liquid solution in isotonic saline, containing 0.25% phenol as a preservative.
Uses
VAXIBOON 23 INJ is a vaccine primarily used for the prevention of invasive diseases caused by pneumococcal bacteria. These diseases include:
- Pneumonia (lung infection)
- Meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord linings)
- Bacteremia/Sepsis (bloodstream infection)
- Ear infections
- Sinus infections
It is recommended for individuals at higher risk of pneumococcal infections, such as children over 2 years of age, adults 65 years or older, people with certain medical conditions, and cigarette smokers.
Dosage and Administration
VAXIBOON 23 INJ is typically administered as a single dose via intramuscular (IM) injection into the upper arm by a healthcare professional. Self-administration is not recommended. For most individuals, only one dose is needed. A booster dose may be given 5 years after the first dose, or between 3-5 years for those at high risk of serious pneumococcal infections. It is advised to administer the vaccine at least two weeks prior to planned spleen removal or initiation of immunosuppressive treatments like chemotherapy. If such treatments are completed, vaccination should occur at least 3 months afterwards.
Side Effects
Common side effects include:
- Fever
- Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness, soreness, tenderness, hard lump) Other reported side effects may include rashes, decreased appetite, irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious allergic reactions like anaphylaxis are rare but require immediate medical attention.
Precautions
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor about any existing heart, liver, kidney problems, severe infections with high fever, bleeding disorders, or a weakened immune system.
- Medication Interactions: Disclose all medications you are currently taking.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before receiving the vaccine if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Acute Illness: Vaccination may be delayed if you have an infection with a high temperature.
- Immunosuppression: The vaccine's effectiveness may be reduced in individuals receiving immunosuppressive therapy or with compromised immune systems.
- Alcohol: It is advisable to avoid alcohol as it may decrease immunity and increase the risk of pneumococcal infections.
- Limitations: This vaccine does not protect against all types of pneumococcal infections and is not for treating an active infection.
Storage
Store VAXIBOON 23 INJ in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C (36-46°F). Do not freeze. All vaccine must be discarded after the expiration date.
Frequently asked questions
Here are frequently asked questions about VAXIBOON 23 INJ by MANKIND PHARMA LTD.:
What is VAXIBOON 23 INJ used for?
VAXIBOON 23 INJ is a vaccine primarily used for the prevention of pneumococcal diseases caused by 23 specific types of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. These diseases can include pneumonia (lung infection), meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord coverings), ear infections, and blood infections (bacteremia or sepsis). It is recommended for adults aged 50 years or older and individuals aged 2 years or older who are at increased risk for pneumococcal disease.
How does VAXIBOON 23 INJ work?
VAXIBOON 23 INJ is a vaccine that contains purified polysaccharide (sugar) molecules from the outer capsule of 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria. These molecules act as antigens, stimulating your body's immune system to produce antibodies. These antibodies help your immune system recognize and fight off these specific bacteria if you are exposed to them in the future, thereby preventing infection. It does not contain a live virus.
What is the usual dosage and administration of VAXIBOON 23 INJ?
The usual dosage is a single 0.5 mL dose. VAXIBOON 23 INJ is administered as an injection into a muscle (intramuscularly), typically in the upper arm, or under the skin (subcutaneously) by a healthcare professional. It should not be self-administered. For most people, only one dose is needed. A booster dose may be considered 5 years after the first dose, especially for individuals at high risk of serious pneumococcal infections, but routine revaccination for immunocompetent persons is generally not recommended.
What are the possible side effects of VAXIBOON 23 INJ?
Common side effects include local reactions at the injection site such as pain, soreness, tenderness, swelling, induration, and redness. Systemic side effects can include headache, fatigue or asthenia, muscle pain (myalgia), chills, and mild fever. These side effects are usually mild and typically resolve within a few days. Serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) are rare but possible.
Is VAXIBOON 23 INJ safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Information regarding the use of VAXIBOON 23 INJ specifically during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited or not available, and it is advised to consult your doctor. However, for the active component, pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23), generally, pregnancy is not a contraindication to vaccination, and pregnant women at high risk of infection should receive the vaccination. For breastfeeding mothers, vaccines given do not typically impact the safety of breastfeeding for mothers or infants. Immunization during the third trimester of pregnancy can increase pneumococcal antibodies in breast milk.
Can VAXIBOON 23 INJ be taken with other medications?
It is important to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking. VAXIBOON 23 INJ can generally be given at the same time as the influenza vaccine, but a different injection site and a separate syringe should be used. Caution is advised with medications that suppress the immune system (e.g., chemotherapy, radiation therapy, high-dose oral corticosteroids) as the vaccine response may be diminished. Also, inform your doctor if you are taking medications that prevent or treat blood clots.
What precautions should be taken before receiving VAXIBOON 23 INJ?
Before receiving VAXIBOON 23 INJ, inform your doctor if you have any allergies to vaccine components, a severe acute illness with high fever (vaccination may need to be deferred until recovery), or problems with your heart, liver, or kidneys. Also, discuss any bleeding problems, conditions affecting your immune system, or seizures. If you have a planned spleen removal or are initiating chemotherapy or other immunosuppressive treatment, it is recommended that the vaccine be given preferably two weeks prior. After such therapies, it's generally advised to wait at least 3 months for optimal vaccine response.
How should VAXIBOON 23 INJ be stored?
VAXIBOON 23 INJ should be stored in a refrigerator, between 2°C and 8°C. It is crucial not to freeze the vaccine. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
