Composition: FORMONIDE 400 MCG INHALER contains a combination of two active ingredients: Budesonide 400 mcg and Formoterol Fumarate 6 mcg.
- Budesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation (swelling) in the airways.
- Formoterol Fumarate is a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (bronchodilator) that relaxes the muscles in the airways, making them wider and easier to breathe through.
Uses: FORMONIDE 400 MCG INHALER is prescribed for the regular management and maintenance treatment of:
- Asthma: To relieve long-term symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness, and to help prevent asthma attacks.
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, to improve breathing and reduce flare-ups.
It is important to note that this inhaler is not intended for the relief of sudden or acute asthma attacks or COPD exacerbations; a rescue inhaler should be used for immediate relief.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage and duration of treatment should be strictly as advised by a physician.
- Typical Guidance (for asthma in adults and adolescents 13-18 years): Usually 2 puffs daily, with each puff containing 100 mcg Budesonide and 6 mcg Formoterol.
- For children above 6 years: The strength may be 80 mcg Budesonide and 4.5 mcg Formoterol per puff.
- Administration Instructions:
- Shake the inhaler well before each use.
- Exhale fully, then place the mouthpiece between your teeth and seal your lips around it.
- Press down on the inhaler canister once to release the medication while inhaling deeply.
- Hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.
- Repeat the process if more than one puff is prescribed.
- After each use, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and spit it out to prevent fungal infections in the mouth and throat.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dosage or frequency.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, cough, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), upper respiratory tract infection, sinus inflammation, fungal infection of oropharynx (oral fungal infection), tremors, palpitations (fluttering in chest), voice change (hoarseness of voice), pharyngolaryngeal pain, influenza, back pain, sore throat, dizziness, muscle cramps, body pain, chills, flu-like symptoms, sneezing, unusual tiredness or weakness, and diarrhea.
- Serious Side Effects: May lead to low potassium levels in the blood, which should be monitored regularly. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe if prescribed, but use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should only occur after assessing the need and if the benefits outweigh the potential risks. Limited human data is available.

- Interactions:
- Avoid concomitant use with certain medications such as Ketoconazole (antifungal), Ritonavir (used in HIV infection), and Clarithromycin (antibiotic) as they may alter the effects of this medicine.

Frequently asked questions
FORMONIDE 400 MCG INHALER by ZYDUS HEALTHCARE LIMITED is a combination medication used for the long-term management of respiratory conditions. It contains Budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid, and Formoterol, a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist.
Here are some frequently asked questions about FORMONIDE 400 MCG INHALER:
What is Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler used for?
Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler is primarily used for the regular maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults and children over 6 years of age. It helps to prevent and treat symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness. It is important to note that this inhaler is for maintenance therapy and should not be used for sudden or acute asthma attacks; a separate rescue inhaler is needed for immediate relief.
How does Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler work?
The inhaler contains two active ingredients: Budesonide and Formoterol. Budesonide is a corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways of the lungs. Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes and widens the muscles of the airways, making it easier to breathe. Together, these actions provide comprehensive control over respiratory symptoms.
What is the usual dosage for Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler?
The specific dosage will be prescribed by your doctor, depending on your condition and response to treatment. For asthma in adults, a common recommendation can be 2 puffs twice daily. It's crucial to follow your doctor's instructions precisely. To use the inhaler, shake it well, exhale fully, place the mouthpiece between your lips, and inhale deeply while pressing down on the canister. Hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds, then exhale slowly. After each use, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out to prevent fungal infections.
What are the possible side effects of Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler?
Common side effects may include fungal infection in the mouth (oral candidiasis), headache, sore throat, hoarse voice, upper respiratory tract infection, flu-like symptoms, cough, back pain, increased heart rate, trembling, nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort. Rinsing your mouth thoroughly with water after each use can help prevent oral fungal infections. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
Is Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
During Pregnancy: Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy for asthma management, as very little of the medicine enters the bloodstream. However, it should only be used if your doctor determines that the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. During Breastfeeding: It is likely safe to use while breastfeeding, as only tiny amounts are expected to pass into breast milk, and it's unlikely to cause significant adverse effects in the baby. Always consult your doctor if you have any concerns while breastfeeding.
Can Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler be taken with other medications?
Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler can interact with certain medications. It is advisable to avoid co-administration with strong CYP 3A4 inhibitors, such as antifungals like ketoconazole, HIV protease inhibitors like ritonavir, and certain antibiotics like clarithromycin, as these can increase the systemic effects of budesonide. Additionally, beta-blockers may lessen the effect of formoterol, and diuretics can potentially lead to low potassium levels. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken when using Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler?
- Do not use this inhaler for sudden breathing difficulties; always have a quick-relief (rescue) inhaler available.
- Rinse your mouth with water after each use to help prevent fungal infections in the mouth and throat.
- Inform your doctor if you have pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, low potassium levels (hypokalemia), glaucoma, cataracts, osteoporosis, liver problems, heart problems, or thyroid issues.
- Avoid contact with sick individuals as the medication may suppress the immune system.
- This medicine is generally not recommended for children below 6 years of age.
- Do not stop using Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this can worsen your symptoms.
What happens if a dose of Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler be stored?
Formonide 400 mcg Inhaler should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. The ideal storage temperature is generally between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC. Keep the inhaler out of sight and reach of children and pets. Do not freeze the medicine.
