DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50

Name: Dyamide Plus 10/50 Tablet.

Composition: Each tablet contains Spironolactone 50 mg and Torsemide (also referred to as Torasemide) 10 mg.

Uses: Dyamide Plus 10/50 is prescribed for the management of fluid retention (oedema) associated with various conditions, including heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disorders such as nephrotic syndrome. It is also used to control resistant hypertension (high blood pressure) that has not responded well to other medications alone, and to reduce fluid overload and high blood pressure caused by hyperaldosteronism.

Dosage and Administration: This medicine is taken orally, typically once daily, preferably in the morning with food to avoid frequent nighttime urination. The dosage and duration of treatment should be precisely as directed by a healthcare professional, based on the patient's medical condition and response. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, or broken. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects: Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased urination, dry mouth, and thirst. Gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain may also occur. Other possible side effects include dehydration, electrolyte imbalance (especially high potassium levels), muscle cramps, weakness, gynecomastia (enlarged breasts in men), and menstrual irregularities.

Precautions: Caution is advised for patients with kidney or liver impairment, diabetes, and gout. It is contraindicated in severe kidney disease or anuria, and generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless deemed necessary by a doctor. Alcohol consumption should be limited or avoided as it may worsen dizziness and dehydration. Patients should avoid potassium-rich foods and potassium supplements. DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 can interact with NSAIDs, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, digoxin, and lithium, potentially leading to adverse effects or altered drug efficacy.

Storage: Store the medicine in a cool, dry place, ideally below 25°C, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep it in its original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 by MACLEODS GENCARE, along with concise answers:

What is DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 used for?

DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 is primarily used to manage fluid retention (edema) and high blood pressure (hypertension). It is prescribed for conditions such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney disorders that lead to excess fluid buildup. It can also be used for resistant hypertension (high blood pressure not controlled by other medicines alone) and hyperaldosteronism (a condition where the body produces too much aldosterone hormone).

How does DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 work?

This medicine is a combination of two diuretics: Spironolactone (50 mg) and Torsemide (10 mg). Torsemide is a loop diuretic that works by increasing the production of urine, thereby reducing fluid buildup. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic that helps the body get rid of excess water and sodium while preventing too much potassium from being lost. It does this by blocking the effects of a hormone called aldosterone. Together, they help remove excess fluid and lower blood pressure while maintaining the body's potassium balance.

What is the usual dosage of DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50?

DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 is typically taken orally as directed by your doctor. It is usually taken once or twice daily, with food, to avoid stomach upset. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and duration based on your age, body weight, and specific medical condition.

What are the possible side effects of DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50?

Common side effects can include dizziness, headache, fatigue, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance (especially high potassium levels), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, muscle cramps, weakness, increased urination, dry mouth, and thirst. Less common side effects may include breast enlargement in men (gynaecomastia) and menstrual irregularities in women. Consult your doctor if any side effects persist or worsen.

Is DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless deemed necessary by your doctor, who will weigh the potential benefits against the risks. Similarly, it is not recommended for use during breastfeeding as there is insufficient information on its safety and it is unknown how much passes into breast milk.

Can DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 be taken with other medications?

This medicine can interact with other medications. For instance, NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) may increase the risk of kidney damage. Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (like enalapril) may lead to high potassium levels in your blood. Antiarrhythmics such as amiodarone and sotalol may also interact, leading to increased levels of these drugs in the body. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while taking DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50?

You should avoid consuming alcohol as it may increase the risk of dizziness and dehydration. It is important to limit your salt intake and maintain adequate hydration. Patients with kidney or liver problems, diabetes, or those prone to electrolyte imbalances should use this medicine with caution, and their doctor will monitor their condition closely. Avoid potassium-rich foods and potassium supplements unless advised by your doctor, as this medicine can increase blood potassium levels.

What happens if a dose of DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

How should DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 be stored?

Store DYAMIDE PLUS 10/50 in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of reach of children.
