NAILROX 8% NAIL LACQUER SOLUTION 5 ML by INTAS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD.

NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution is an antifungal medication designed for topical treatment of fungal infections.

  • Name: NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution.
  • Composition: Each solution contains Ciclopirox Olamine 8% w/v (or 8% w/w).
  • Uses:
    • Manages mild to moderate fungal infections of fingernails and toenails (onychomycosis) caused by dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds, including Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
    • Also used to treat fungal skin infections like athlete's foot, jock itch, candidiasis, tinea corporis, and seborrheic dermatitis, as well as on the skin immediately surrounding infected nails.
  • Dosage and Administration:
    • For external use only.
    • Clean and dry the affected nail and surrounding skin before application.
    • Before starting treatment, and periodically thereafter as directed by a doctor, any loose or infected nail material should be removed using clippers or a filer.
    • Apply a thin, even layer of the lacquer evenly over the entire affected nail plate and approximately 5 mm of the surrounding skin once daily, preferably at bedtime. If possible, also apply to the underside of the nail and hyponychium.
    • Allow the lacquer to dry for about 30 seconds before putting on socks or stockings.
    • Wash hands thoroughly after application. Do not wash the treated area for at least 8 hours post-application.
    • Once a week, remove the lacquer using alcohol.
    • The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the infection and can be several months until healthy nails have grown back.
  • Side Effects:
    • Common side effects include redness, burning, stinging, itching, irritation at the application site, changes in nail shape or color, pain in the treated area, swelling, and ingrown toenails. Most are temporary and resolve with discontinuation.
  • Precautions:
    • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or mucous membranes. Rinse immediately with water if accidental contact occurs and consult a doctor if irritation persists.
    • Do not use if allergic to ciclopirox or any ingredients.
    • Consult a doctor if you have diabetes or peripheral neuropathy.
    • Avoid using cosmetic nail lacquer or artificial nails during treatment.
    • Do not share nail filers to prevent spreading the infection.
    • Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding, only if prescribed by a doctor.
    • Keep away from heat or open flames as it is flammable.
  • Storage:
    • Store in a tightly closed container at room temperature, below 25°C or 30°C.
    • Protect from light and moisture, and keep in its original carton when not in use.
    • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
Frequently asked questions

What is NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution used for?

NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution is an antifungal medication primarily used to manage mild to moderate fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails, also known as onychomycosis. It can also be used for fungal skin infections, including those immediately surrounding the nails, especially when caused by fungi like Trichophyton rubrum.

How does NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution work?

This medicine contains ciclopirox olamine (8%), which is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent. It works by binding to trivalent metal cations like iron (Fe+3) or aluminum (Al+3) in fungal cells, a process known as chelation. This action inhibits certain enzymes crucial for fungal cell function and disrupts protein production, thereby stopping the growth of fungi and eventually killing them.

What is the usual dosage and application?

NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution is for external use only. It should be applied once daily, preferably at bedtime, to the entire affected nail and about 5 mm of the surrounding skin. Before application, any loose or infected nail material should be removed using clippers or a file, and the nails should be washed and dried. The lacquer should be allowed to dry for about 30 seconds before putting on socks or stockings, and the treated area should not be washed for at least 8 hours after application. Once a week, the lacquer should be removed with alcohol, and as much of the damaged nail as possible should be removed. It is important to continue using the lacquer as prescribed by your doctor, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning.

What are the possible side effects of NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution?

Common side effects may include redness, burning, stinging, irritation, or itching at the application site. Other possible, though less common, effects include changes in nail shape or color, pain in the treated area, swelling of the treated skin, or ingrown toenail. These side effects are usually temporary and resolve after discontinuing the medicine. If any serious or worsening symptoms occur, consult your doctor.

Is NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution should be used with caution during pregnancy and only if considered necessary by a doctor. While animal studies have shown low or no adverse effects, human studies are limited. For breastfeeding women, it is advised to consult a doctor before use, as it is not known whether the medicine passes into breast milk.

Can NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution be taken with other medications?

Using NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution (which contains ciclopirox) with oral antifungal medications (such as fluconazole, itraconazole, or ketoconazole) is not recommended, as it might reduce the effectiveness of these oral medications. There are no known food interactions, and interactions with alcohol are unlikely due to it being a topical medication. Always inform your doctor about all ongoing medications to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution?

This medicine is for external use only; avoid contact with eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse immediately with water. Do not use if you are allergic to ciclopirox or any of its ingredients. Patients with conditions like diabetes or peripheral neuropathy should exercise caution. Avoid applying nail polish or other cosmetic nail products on the treated nails during the treatment period to ensure effectiveness. Do not cover the treated area with a bandage. NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution should be used with caution in children under 18 years of age.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss an application of NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution be stored?

NAILROX 8% Nail Lacquer Solution should be stored in a tightly closed container at room temperature, below 30°C. Keep it away from heat, open flames, and direct sunlight, as it is flammable. Ensure it is kept out of reach of children and pets.
