EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TABLET
Name: Empaglyde L 10 Tablet (Brand: Mankind Pharma Ltd.)
Composition: Each tablet contains Empagliflozin 10 mg and Linagliptin 5 mg.
Uses: Empaglyde L 10 Tablet is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood sugar control as an adjunct to diet and exercise. It also helps in reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. Additionally, it is used to treat chronic kidney disease in adults with reduced kidney function.
Dosage and Administration: This medicine is typically taken once daily, with or without food, preferably in the morning. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed, crushed, or split. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding the specific dosage, as it varies based on individual medical conditions and response to treatment. If a dose is missed and it's 12 hours or more until the next dose, take it as soon as remembered. If it's less than 12 hours, skip the missed dose.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include urinary tract infections, nasopharyngitis (common cold-like symptoms), upper respiratory tract infections, increased urination, skin rash, itching, dizziness, light-headedness, constipation, and genital fungal infections. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can occur, especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Serious allergic reactions such as angioedema and anaphylaxis have been reported.
Precautions: Empaglyde L 10 Tablet is not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney problems; severe kidney disease may necessitate dose adjustment or avoidance. It is generally advised to avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of dehydration or hypoglycemia. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially diuretics, insulin, or insulin secretagogues, to avoid potential interactions. Do not stop the medication abruptly without consulting your doctor.
Storage: Store the medicine below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, excessive heat, and direct light. Keep out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
Frequently asked questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions about EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB:
What is EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB used for?
EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB is a combination medicine primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It is prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control. Additionally, it is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and to lower the risk of worsening kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with chronic kidney disease.
How does EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB work?
EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB contains two active ingredients: Empagliflozin and Linagliptin. Empagliflozin works by blocking a protein in the kidneys called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2). This action prevents the reabsorption of glucose back into the bloodstream, leading to increased excretion of glucose in the urine and thus lowering blood sugar levels. Linagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It increases the levels of natural substances called incretins, which help regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin release, especially after meals, and by decreasing the amount of sugar the liver produces.
What is the usual dosage for EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB?
The usual dose for EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB (which contains 10 mg Empagliflozin and 5 mg Linagliptin) is one tablet taken once a day. It can be taken any time of day, with or without food, but it is recommended to take it at the same time each day to help remember. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on your individual needs and how well your blood sugar levels are controlled.
What are the possible side effects of EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB?
Common side effects can include genital mycotic (yeast) infections, urinary tract infections, increased urination, dizziness, and lightheadedness. Serious but less common side effects can include dehydration, symptomatic low blood pressure (hypotension), diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition with high ketone levels), and a rare but severe bacterial infection called Fournier's gangrene affecting the genital area. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can occur, particularly when EMPAGLYDE L is taken with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas.
Is EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB is generally not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to potential risks to the unborn baby. For breastfeeding, it is also not usually recommended as it is not known how much of the medication passes into breast milk and there is a theoretical risk to the infant's developing kidneys. Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB be taken with other medications?
EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB can interact with other medications. Taking it with diuretics (water pills) may increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure. When taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) increases, and your doctor may need to adjust the dose of these other medications. It can also interact with lithium, potentially decreasing lithium levels. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking.
What precautions should be taken while taking EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB?
It is important to stay well-hydrated while taking this medicine. Your doctor will monitor your kidney function and blood pressure regularly. EMPAGLYDE L should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Exercise caution if you have kidney impairment, low blood pressure, or a history of genital yeast infections or urinary tract infections. If you experience severe vomiting, diarrhea, or are scheduled for surgery, your doctor may advise temporarily stopping the medication to reduce the risk of ketoacidosis or acute kidney injury.
What happens if a dose of EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, provided it is at least 12 hours before your next scheduled dose. If it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB be stored?
Store EMPAGLYDE L 10MG TAB in its original container, tightly closed, at room temperature (between 20°C to 25°C or 68°F to 77°F). Keep the medicine away from excess heat, moisture, and direct light, and out of reach of children.
