PAN 80 TABLET by ALKEM LABORATORIES LTD

Name

  • Brand Name: PAN 80 TABLET
  • Common Name: Pantoprazole

Composition

  • Each tablet contains Pantoprazole 80mg.

Uses PAN 80 TABLET is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is prescribed for the management of various acid-related conditions, including:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and associated symptoms such as heartburn, acidity, and acid reflux.
  • Erosive Esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid).
  • Peptic Ulcers (duodenal and gastric ulcers), including those caused by long-term use of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome and other pathological hypersecretory conditions where the stomach produces excess acid.
  • Eradication of Helicobacter pylori as part of a combination therapy.

Dosage and Administration

  • PAN 80 TABLET should be taken orally, preferably on an empty stomach about 30 minutes before a meal.
  • Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush, chew, or break it.
  • For Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome and other hypersecretory states: The initial adult dose is typically 80 mg once per day, which may be adjusted based on patient response, up to a maximum of 240 mg per day in divided doses. Oral administration is often 40 mg twice daily.
  • Dosage for other conditions, such as erosive esophagitis or peptic ulcers, often starts at 40 mg daily, with an additional 8-week course if needed.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, and joint pain.
  • Serious Side Effects (less common but require medical attention): Severe or watery diarrhea (possibly Clostridioides difficile-associated), kidney problems (e.g., acute tubulointerstitial nephritis), low magnesium levels (symptoms like tremors, irregular heartbeat, muscle spasms), bone fractures (with long-term or high-dose use), vitamin B12 deficiency (with long-term use), and fundic gland polyps.

Precautions

  • Contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to pantoprazole or other PPIs.
  • Pantoprazole is not intended for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms; persistent chest pain should be evaluated for potential cardiac issues.
  • Long-term use (beyond 3 months or 1 year) may increase the risk of hypomagnesemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, and bone fractures.
  • Caution is advised in patients with atrophic gastritis, bacterial overgrowth in the GI tract, or a history of lupus, as pantoprazole may worsen these conditions.
  • This medicine may interact with other drugs, including those dependent on gastric pH for absorption (e.g., iron salts, ketoconazole), rilpivirine, and clopidogrel.
  • Use during pregnancy and lactation should be under strict medical guidance, as pantoprazole may pass into breast milk.

Storage

  • Store PAN 80 TABLET at room temperature, between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
  • Protect from light and moisture.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions

PAN 80 Tablet is a medication containing Pantoprazole (80mg), which belongs to a class of drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

What is PAN 80 Tablet used for?

PAN 80 Tablet is primarily used to treat conditions caused by excessive stomach acid. These include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn, acid reflux, peptic ulcers (stomach and duodenal ulcers), erosive esophagitis (inflammation of the food pipe), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a condition where the stomach produces too much acid due to a pancreatic tumor). It can also be used to prevent stomach ulcers and acidity associated with the prolonged use of painkillers.

How does PAN 80 Tablet work?

PAN 80 Tablet works by blocking the action of an enzyme called H+/K+ ATPase, also known as the gastric proton pump, which is located in the cells of the stomach wall and is responsible for releasing gastric acid. By irreversibly inhibiting this proton pump, Pantoprazole reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes, thereby relieving symptoms and promoting healing of acid-related damage to the food pipe, stomach, and duodenum.

What is the usual dosage for PAN 80 Tablet?

PAN 80 Tablet is typically taken once daily, usually in the morning, about 30-60 minutes to one hour before a meal, on an empty stomach to maximize its effectiveness. The exact dosage and duration of treatment will depend on the medical condition being treated and your doctor's assessment. For conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, the initial dose might be 80 mg per day and can be increased up to 240 mg/day in divided doses if rapid control is needed. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, or broken.

What are the possible side effects of PAN 80 Tablet?

Common side effects of PAN 80 Tablet may include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, dizziness, and joint pain. These side effects are usually temporary and tend to resolve on their own. More serious, but less common, side effects with prolonged use (longer than 3 months to a year) can include low magnesium levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, and an increased risk of bone fractures.

Is PAN 80 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

PAN 80 Tablet should be used in pregnant women only if considered necessary by a physician. Limited information is available regarding its use during pregnancy, so it is generally advised to use it only if prescribed by your doctor. If you are breastfeeding, PAN 80 Tablet may pass into breast milk. It is advised not to take it unless prescribed by your doctor.

Can PAN 80 Tablet be taken with other medications?

PAN 80 Tablet can interact with certain medications. It may decrease the effectiveness or absorption of drugs like some antifungals, anti-HIV medications (e.g., atazanavir, nelfinavir), and iron supplements. It may also interact with blood thinners like warfarin, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to prevent possible interactions.

What precautions should be taken with PAN 80 Tablet?

Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergies to Pantoprazole or similar medicines, or if you have liver problems, stomach cancer, low magnesium levels, or low vitamin B12. Prolonged intake may lead to deficiencies in Vitamin B12 and magnesium, and an increased risk of bone fractures, especially if used for more than a year. Avoid or limit alcohol consumption as it can aggravate acidity. Do not take this medicine if you are taking rilpivirine for HIV treatment.

What happens if a dose of PAN 80 Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of PAN 80 Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

How should PAN 80 Tablet be stored?

PAN 80 Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of sight and reach of children. Store it at room temperature, typically between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC.
