Severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) like Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) have been reported with systemic piroxicam and cannot be entirely ruled out with topical use. Stop use immediately if blistering, bruising, or ulcers appear on the skin or mucous membranes (mouth, nose, throat, genitals).

Frequently asked questions
PIROX GEL 30 GM by CIPLA LTD. (GENERIC DIVISION) is a topical medication containing Piroxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation in various musculoskeletal conditions.
What is PIROX GEL used for?
PIROX GEL is primarily used for the short-term relief of pain, inflammation, and stiffness associated with conditions affecting joints and muscles. This includes conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, minor injuries like sprains and bruises, tendinitis, tenosynovitis, periarthritis, and low back pain.
How does PIROX GEL work?
PIROX GEL contains Piroxicam, which belongs to the class of NSAIDs. It works by inhibiting enzymes responsible for producing prostaglandins, which are natural chemicals in the body that cause pain, swelling, and inflammation at the site of injury or disease. By blocking these chemical messengers, Piroxicam helps to reduce discomfort and improve movement in the affected area.
What is the usual dosage of PIROX GEL?
PIROX GEL is for external use only. A thin layer of the gel should be applied to the affected area and gently massaged into the skin. The specific frequency and duration of application should be as advised by your doctor. It is recommended to wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the gel, unless your hands are the area being treated.
What are the possible side effects of PIROX GEL?
Common side effects of PIROX GEL include localized skin reactions such as irritation, redness (erythema), itching (pruritus), skin rash, contact dermatitis, or eczema at the application site. In rare cases, more severe reactions like increased sensitivity to sunlight, blistering, or mouth sores may occur. If severe reactions or worsening of symptoms are experienced, it is important to contact your doctor immediately.
Is PIROX GEL safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
The use of PIROX GEL is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the later stages, as studies in animals have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Similarly, it is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding, as limited human data suggests the drug may pass into breast milk and potentially harm the baby. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can PIROX GEL be taken with other medications?
Due to its topical application, PIROX GEL is less likely to interact with oral medications. However, it may interact with other topical medications. For instance, topical anti-acne medicines containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, and topical corticosteroids, may have altered effectiveness or increased risk of skin irritation when used concurrently. It is advisable to inform your doctor about all medicines you are currently using, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products, to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken while using PIROX GEL?
Avoid applying PIROX GEL to broken, wounded, diseased, infected, or irritated skin, as this may increase absorption and potential side effects. Do not let the gel come into contact with your eyes, lips, mouth, nose, or genital/anal areas; if accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do not cover the treated area with occlusive bandages or dressings unless specifically instructed by your doctor, as this may increase the risk of side effects. Use caution if you have pre-existing skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, or if you have a history of severe allergic reactions to NSAIDs. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight on the treated area, as the gel may increase sensitivity to the sun.
What happens if a dose of PIROX GEL is missed?
If you miss a dose of PIROX GEL, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
How should PIROX GEL be stored?
PIROX GEL should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of the reach and sight of children and pets. The gel should be stored at temperatures between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC, and should not be frozen.
