Description
PEGCLEAR SYR (Zuventus Healthcare Ltd.)
PEGCLEAR SYR is a sugar-free oral solution primarily used as a laxative to treat constipation. It helps facilitate comfortable bowel movements by softening stools.
Composition Each 25 ml of PEGCLEAR SYR contains:
- Polyethylene Glycol 3350 USP: 13.125 gm
- Sodium Chloride IP: 0.3507 gm
- Sodium Bicarbonate IP: 0.1785 gm
- Potassium Chloride IP: 0.0466 gm
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 3350 acts as an osmotic laxative, drawing water into the intestine to soften stools and increase their volume, thereby promoting bowel movements. The electrolytes (Sodium Chloride, Sodium Bicarbonate, and Potassium Chloride) help maintain the body's electrolyte balance during this process.
Uses PEGCLEAR SYR is prescribed for:
- Treatment of chronic constipation in adults, adolescents, and the elderly.
- Relief from occasional constipation.
- Bowel cleansing prior to certain medical procedures like colonoscopy.
- Treatment of fecal impaction.
Dosage and Administration PEGCLEAR SYR must be diluted with water before use and should not be taken undiluted.
- Adults, Adolescents, & Elderly: The usual starting dose is 25 ml of solution diluted in 100 ml of water, taken 1-3 times daily, adjusted according to individual response. For extended use, the dose can be reduced to 1 or 2 doses per day.
- Children:
- 2 to 6 years: Usual starting daily dose is 12.5 ml solution diluted in 50 ml of water.
- 7 to 11 years: Usual starting daily dose is 25 ml solution diluted in 100 ml of water.
- The dose should be adjusted to produce regular soft stools, increasing every second day if needed. The maximum dose of PEG 3350 typically does not exceed 26.252 gm per day.
- Any unused diluted solution should be discarded within 24 hours. The medicine can be taken with or without food.

- Caution is advised for patients on a controlled sodium diet due to the sodium content.
- If symptoms like swelling, difficulty breathing, increased tiredness, or dehydration develop, stop use and seek medical attention.
- Polyethylene glycol may transiently reduce the absorption of other oral medications; avoid taking other oral medications within 1 hour before or during administration.
- Use with caution in patients with kidney diseases or electrolyte abnormalities.
- Although generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, consult a doctor before use.
- Prolonged use beyond two weeks is not usually recommended for constipation unless advised by a doctor for severe chronic conditions or medication-induced constipation.

Frequently asked questions
PEGCLEAR SYR by Zuventus Healthcare Ltd. is an oral solution primarily used as a laxative. It contains Polyethylene Glycol (PEG 3350) along with electrolytes like Sodium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, and Sodium Bicarbonate, which work together to relieve constipation.
What is PEGCLEAR SYR used for?
PEGCLEAR SYR is used for the treatment of chronic constipation in adults, adolescents, and the elderly. It helps you to have a comfortable bowel movement, even if you have been constipated for a long time. It can also be used for bowel cleansing prior to colonoscopy in adult patients. It is not recommended for children below 2 years of age.
How does PEGCLEAR SYR work?
PEGCLEAR SYR acts as an osmotic laxative. Its main active ingredient, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG 3350), works by drawing water into the intestine. This softens the stools and increases their volume, which then triggers colon motility and facilitates easier bowel movements. The electrolytes included help to maintain the body's natural balance of sodium, potassium, and water.
What is the usual dosage for PEGCLEAR SYR?
For adults, adolescents, and the elderly for constipation, the usual starting daily dose is 25 ml of solution diluted in 100 ml of water, taken 1 to 3 times a day, adjusted according to individual response and severity of constipation. For children aged 2 to 6 years, the usual starting daily dose is 12.5 ml solution diluted in 50 ml of water. For children aged 7 to 11 years, the usual starting daily dose is 25 ml solution diluted in 100 ml of water. The dose should be adjusted to produce regular soft stools. PEGCLEAR must be diluted in water and should not be taken undiluted. Any unused diluted solution should be discarded within 24 hours. It can be taken with or without food. Treatment for constipation should not normally exceed 2 weeks, though longer use may be advised by a doctor for severe chronic constipation, such as in patients with multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease.
What are the possible side effects of PEGCLEAR SYR?
Common side effects may include abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, gas, and mild diarrhea. Mild diarrhea often responds to a reduction in dose. Less common but serious side effects can include allergic reactions such as rash, itching, reddening of the skin, nettle rash, swelling of hands, feet, or ankles, headache, or, in severe cases, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. If you experience a serious allergic reaction, stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical attention.
Is PEGCLEAR SYR safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
PEGCLEAR SYR is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, as systemic exposure to its active ingredient, PEG 3350, is negligible, meaning minimal amounts are absorbed into the body. However, it is always advisable to consult your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Can PEGCLEAR SYR be taken with other medications?
PEGCLEAR SYR may transiently increase the gastro-intestinal transit rate, which could potentially reduce the absorption of other orally administered medications. Therefore, it is generally recommended to avoid taking other oral medications within 1 hour before or during the administration of PEGCLEAR SYR. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking to avoid possible interactions.
What precautions should be taken with PEGCLEAR SYR?
It is important to continue drinking plenty of fluids while taking PEGCLEAR SYR, as the fluid content of the solution should not replace your regular liquid intake. Do not take PEGCLEAR SYR if you have a blockage or perforation in your intestine, severe inflammatory bowel disease (like ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or toxic megacolon), or an allergy to any of its ingredients. Caution is advised for patients on a controlled sodium diet due to the sodium content in the solution, and for individuals with electrolyte abnormalities or kidney disorders. If you experience severe bloating, abdominal pain, or distension, slow down or temporarily stop taking the solution and contact your healthcare provider.
What happens if a dose of PEGCLEAR SYR is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should PEGCLEAR SYR be stored?
Keep PEGCLEAR SYR out of the sight and reach of children. Do not refrigerate or freeze, and store it at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. Discard any remaining product 30 days after first opening the bottle. Once diluted in water, any solution not used within a 24-hour period should be discarded.
