PRE ALDONIL

Name: Pre Aldonil (brand name).

Composition: Pre Aldonil contains a combination of Epalrestat and Pregabalin. The dosage typically found is 150mg of Epalrestat and 150mg of Pregabalin per tablet, although a 150mg Epalrestat + 75mg Pregabalin variant also exists. Epalrestat is an aldose reductase inhibitor, and Pregabalin is an alpha 2 delta ligand (cyclic GABA analogue).

Uses: Pre Aldonil is primarily used to treat neuropathic pain, especially diabetic nerve disease (diabetic neuropathy). It helps alleviate pain, protects nerve fibers from damage, and promotes the regeneration of nerve cells. Neuropathic pain is a chronic condition often characterized by burning, tingling, or shooting pain.

Dosage and Administration: Pre Aldonil should be taken on an empty stomach, ideally at the same time each day. The dose and duration of treatment are determined by a doctor. It is crucial not to stop taking the medicine without consulting a doctor, as abrupt discontinuation can lead to increased blood sugar levels and serious complications.

Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, uncoordinated body movements, increased liver enzymes, weight gain, dry mouth, blurred vision, and urine discoloration. Most of these are temporary and usually subside. More serious side effects can include thoughts of self-harm, and persistent symptoms should prompt medical consultation.

Precautions:

  • Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol is unsafe while taking Pre Aldonil as it can increase drowsiness and sleepiness.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Pre Aldonil may be unsafe during pregnancy and is generally not recommended for breastfeeding women unless deemed necessary by a doctor.
  • Driving: The medicine can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so driving or operating machinery should be avoided if alertness is affected.
  • Kidney and Liver Conditions: Use with caution in patients with kidney disease, and dose adjustment may be required. While generally considered safe for liver disease, consultation with a doctor is advised.
  • Other: Inform your doctor about any pre-existing heart problems, bipolar syndrome, severe liver disease, porphyria, or kidney impairments. Do not stop treatment abruptly to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

Storage: Store below 30°C and keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

PRE ALDONIL by ZYDUS HEALTHCARE LIMITED: Frequently Asked Questions

What is PRE ALDONIL used for?

PRE ALDONIL is primarily used to treat neuropathic pain, especially nerve damage caused by diabetes, known as diabetic neuropathy. It helps alleviate symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning pain, and reduced sensation in the hands and feet. This medicine also promotes the regeneration of nerve cells.

How does PRE ALDONIL work?

PRE ALDONIL is a combination of two active ingredients: Epalrestat and Pregabalin. Epalrestat is an aldose reductase inhibitor that works by blocking the accumulation of sorbitol in cells, which is linked to diabetic nerve damage. Pregabalin is an alpha 2 delta ligand that reduces pain by modulating the calcium channel activity of nerve cells and interfering with pain signals traveling through damaged nerves and the brain. It also improves nerve conduction.

What are the possible side effects of PRE ALDONIL?

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, uncoordinated body movements, headache, stomach pain, dry mouth, constipation, increased liver enzymes, and increased appetite. Less common side effects can include blurred or double vision, sleep problems, fatigue, and feeling generally unwell.

Is PRE ALDONIL safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

PRE ALDONIL should generally not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless considered absolutely necessary by a doctor. Limited human studies and animal studies for pregnancy have shown potential harmful effects on the developing fetus. It's essential to consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Can PRE ALDONIL be taken with other medications?

Before taking PRE ALDONIL, inform your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking. It's particularly important to mention medicines used to manage severe pain (e.g., morphine, fentanyl, oxycodone) and medications for anxiety (e.g., lorazepam). Combining PRE ALDONIL with certain drugs, such as MAO inhibitors, can lead to life-threatening interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using PRE ALDONIL?

Patients with a history of heart, liver, or kidney disease, alcoholism, drug abuse, or dependence should use PRE ALDONIL with caution and inform their doctor. It may cause dizziness and drowsiness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these effects. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is advised. Do not stop taking the medicine abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms and increased blood sugar levels.

What happens if a dose of PRE ALDONIL is missed?

If you miss a dose of PRE ALDONIL, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.

How should PRE ALDONIL be stored?

PRE ALDONIL should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, typically at temperatures between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Keep it out of the reach and sight of children.

Should alcohol be avoided while taking PRE ALDONIL?

Yes, it is generally unsafe and strongly advised to avoid consuming alcohol while taking PRE ALDONIL. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness.
