RISNIA MD 2 Tablet

RISNIA MD 2 is a medication manufactured by Cipla Ltd. (Division Impulse 1) and is primarily used in the management of certain psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Composition

The active ingredient in RISNIA MD 2 Tablet is Risperidone at a strength of 2 mg. Risperidone is classified as an atypical antipsychotic.

Uses

RISNIA MD 2 Tablet is prescribed for a range of mental health conditions:

  • Schizophrenia: It helps treat hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and abnormal behavior in adults and children aged 13 and older by restoring chemical imbalances in the brain.
  • Bipolar Disorder (Manic Episodes): Used alone or in combination with other medicines, it controls mood swings, especially manic or mixed episodes (mania and depression) in adults and children aged 10 and older. It helps to stabilize mood and prevent recurrence of mania.
  • Behavioral Problems in Autistic Children: It reduces irritability, aggression, mood swings, and self-injurious behavior in children aged 5 to 16 years with autism spectrum disorder.
  • It may also be used for short-term management of long-term aggressiveness in Alzheimer's dementia and in intellectually disabled children (at least 5 years of age).

Dosage and Administration

RISNIA MD 2 Tablet is taken orally, with or without food, preferably at night. It is advised to take it at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of medicine in the body. The correct dosage depends on the patient's age, gender, medical history, and the condition being treated. Do not discontinue the use of this medicine without consulting your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but skip it if it's almost time for the next dose; do not double the dose.

Frequently asked questions

What is RISNIA MD 2 used for?

RISNIA MD 2 Tablet is an antipsychotic medication primarily used to treat schizophrenia, a mental disorder characterized by disorganized thinking, hallucinations, and delusions. It is also prescribed for mania or mixed episodes in adults and children over 10 years old with bipolar disorder. Additionally, it is used to manage behavioral problems like irritability, aggression, self-injury, and mood changes in children aged 5 to 16 years with autism, and long-term aggression in individuals with Alzheimer's dementia.

How does RISNIA MD 2 work?

RISNIA MD 2 contains Risperidone, which is an atypical antipsychotic. It functions by blocking the effects of specific chemical messengers in the brain, namely dopamine and serotonin. This action helps to restore the balance of these neurotransmitters, leading to improvements in mood, behavior, and thoughts, and alleviating the symptoms of the treated conditions.

What is the usual dosage of RISNIA MD 2?

The dosage of RISNIA MD 2 varies depending on the patient's age, medical condition, and individual response to treatment. It is typically started at a low dose and gradually increased by a doctor. For schizophrenia, adults may begin with 2 mg per day, while older adults might start with 0.5 mg twice daily. For children with autism, the dosage is determined by their weight. The medication can be taken as a single daily dose or divided into two doses, with or without food, preferably at night to maintain consistent medication levels.

What are the possible side effects of RISNIA MD 2?

Common side effects of RISNIA MD 2 include sleepiness, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, insomnia, sedation, fatigue, and weight gain. Some individuals may experience parkinsonism (tremors, stiffness, shuffling walk). More serious, but less common, side effects can include muscle stiffness, seizures, irregular heartbeat, unusual body movements, a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing (orthostatic hypotension), and an increased risk of developing diabetes.

Is RISNIA MD 2 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

RISNIA MD 2 is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless your doctor determines it is absolutely necessary, as it may cause unwanted side effects in the baby, especially if taken in the last trimester. It is also considered unsafe during breastfeeding, as the drug can pass into breast milk and potentially harm the nursing infant, causing side effects such as poor feeding, difficulty sleeping, and restlessness.

Can RISNIA MD 2 be taken with other medications?

RISNIA MD 2 can interact with various medications. It may lower blood pressure when taken with antihypertensives. Certain antibiotics (like rifampicin) can decrease its effectiveness, while anti-acidity medicines (like cimetidine and ranitidine) can increase its levels in the blood. Anti-epilepsy medications (such as carbamazepine and phenytoin) may also alter RISNIA MD 2 levels. Combining it with some antidepressants or other antipsychotics can increase the risk of side effects. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using RISNIA MD 2?

Before taking RISNIA MD 2, inform your doctor if you have medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, liver or kidney disease, a low white blood cell count, seizures, breast cancer, or Parkinson's disease. Be cautious when standing up from a sitting or lying position to avoid dizziness caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. It is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption, driving, or operating heavy machinery until you understand how the medication affects you, as it can cause dizziness and sleepiness. Your doctor may also recommend regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, prolactin levels, and body weight.

What happens if a dose of RISNIA MD 2 is missed?

If you miss a dose of RISNIA MD 2, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this can increase the risk of side effects. If you frequently miss doses or miss two or more doses, contact your doctor for guidance.

How should RISNIA MD 2 be stored?

RISNIA MD 2 should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, at temperatures between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed, and out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Do not store it in humid places like bathrooms. Regularly check the expiration date and dispose of any unused or expired medication properly as advised by your pharmacist or doctor.
