Frequently asked questions
What is GEMTIDE Injection used for?
GEMTIDE Injection is used to treat severe osteoporosis in men and postmenopausal women who have a high risk of fractures. It is particularly prescribed for individuals with osteoporosis where other treatments have been ineffective, caused severe side effects, or are contraindicated. This includes postmenopausal osteoporosis and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
How does GEMTIDE Injection work?
GEMTIDE Injection contains Teriparatide, a synthetic form of a natural human hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH). It works by stimulating the number and activity of bone-forming cells called osteoblasts. This process leads to the formation of new bone tissue, which increases bone mineral density and strength, ultimately reducing the risk of fractures, especially in the spine and hip. It can also help accelerate bone healing by promoting callus formation.
What is the usual dosage and how is it administered?
The usual dose for adults is 20 micrograms injected under the skin (subcutaneously) once a day. It should be injected into the thigh or abdomen. GEMTIDE Injection should be used regularly and at the same time each day to achieve maximum benefit. It is usually administered by a healthcare professional, and patients should not self-inject unless properly instructed. The total duration of treatment is generally limited to a maximum of 2 years (24 months) over a patient's lifetime.
What are the possible side effects of GEMTIDE Injection?
Common side effects of GEMTIDE Injection include joint pain, injection site reactions (such as pain, swelling, and redness), nausea, headache, dizziness, weakness, constipation, and leg cramps. Some individuals may experience low blood pressure and dizziness during the initial days after injection, which may require sitting or lying down until symptoms subside. Serious side effects can include hypercalcemia (high calcium levels), which may present as nausea, vomiting, constipation, low energy, or muscle weakness. In rare cases, there is an increased risk of osteosarcoma (a type of bone cancer), especially in individuals with pre-existing risk factors.
Is GEMTIDE Injection safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
GEMTIDE Injection is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, and a doctor has assessed the risks and benefits. Animal studies have shown potential harm to the developing baby. It is contraindicated in pregnant women, and proper birth control measures should be taken during treatment. Information regarding its use during breastfeeding is limited, and it is unknown if it passes into breast milk. Therefore, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers should consult their doctors.
Can it be taken with other medications?
It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines, including prescription, over-the-counter, nutritional, vitamin supplements, and herbal products, as certain medications may interact with GEMTIDE Injection. Caution is advised when taking it with medicines used to treat heart diseases, such as digoxin, as it may cause harmful effects. Thiazide diuretics can increase the risk of hypercalcemia when used concurrently with teriparatide, requiring regular monitoring of blood calcium levels. While calcium and Vitamin D supplements are often recommended for bone health, excessive intake can also increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
What precautions should be taken?
GEMTIDE Injection should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease, kidney stones, or a history of liver diseases, and dose adjustments or regular monitoring may be required. It should not be used by individuals with severe renal impairment, Paget's disease, any type of bone cancer, or unexplained high levels of serum calcium. Patients with orthostatic hypotension or pre-existing hyperparathyroidism should use it cautiously. Due to the potential for dizziness and lightheadedness, activities like driving or operating heavy machinery should be avoided if these symptoms occur. GEMTIDE Injection is not recommended for children and young adults under 18 years of age.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If a dose of GEMTIDE Injection is missed, it should be administered as soon as you remember on the same day. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not administer extra medicine or a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Since it is often administered by a healthcare professional, the chances of missing a dose are low, but if you feel a dose has been missed, inform your nurse or doctor.
How should it be stored?
GEMTIDE Injection should always be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). It is crucial to avoid freezing the medicine, as this can damage it and lead to a loss of activity. Therefore, do not place the injection pens near the ice compartment of the refrigerator. If properly stored, the medication can be used for up to 28 days after the first injection; any unused pen should be discarded after this period. Keep it away from moisture, heat, light, children, and pets.
