Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Dettol Antiseptic Liquid

Dettol Antiseptic Liquid is a concentrated antiseptic solution widely used for first aid, medical, and personal hygiene purposes, as well as for household disinfection. Its active ingredient, Chloroxylenol, works to kill bacteria and protect against germs that can cause infection and illness.

What is Dettol Antiseptic Liquid used for?

Dettol Antiseptic Liquid is a versatile product used as an antiseptic for minor wounds like cuts, bites, grazes, and insect stings. It's also used for antiseptic skin cleansing, including personal hygiene applications like adding it to bath water, treating spots and pimples (excluding eczematous conditions), and managing dandruff. Additionally, it serves as a household disinfectant for cleaning surfaces such as floors, tiles, tables, and laundry.

How does Dettol Antiseptic Liquid work?

The active ingredient in Dettol Antiseptic Liquid is Chloroxylenol, which makes up 4.8% w/v of the solution. Chloroxylenol is a substituted phenol known for its bactericidal properties, effectively killing a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by disrupting the cell walls of microorganisms, preventing their growth and spread, thereby protecting against infection. The liquid also contains pine oil, isopropyl alcohol, castor oil, and soap.

What is the usual dosage or dilution?

Dettol Antiseptic Liquid must always be diluted before use and is for external application only.

  • For minor wounds (cuts, grazes, bites, stings): Dilute 1 tablespoonful (approximately 15 ml or three medicine measures) in half a pint (around 300-400 ml) of water.
  • For bathing: Add 30 ml to your bath water for a refreshed feeling. It should not be used when bathing babies under 9 months old, except on medical advice.
  • For household disinfection (floors, hard surfaces): Prepare a 1:20 dilution (e.g., 20 ml in 400 ml of water or 50ml in 1 litre of water). Apply to the surface, leave for 3-5 minutes, and then wipe.
  • For laundry: Add 30 ml to the rinse cycle to freshen linen or other items.

What are the possible side effects?

When used externally and as directed, Dettol Antiseptic Liquid typically has no major side effects. However, minor side effects can include skin irritation, a stinging sensation, or dryness, particularly in individuals with sensitive skin. Allergic contact dermatitis, characterized by redness, itching, or blistering, can occur in some individuals. Using undiluted Dettol on the skin can cause severe chemical burns. Accidental ingestion is highly dangerous and can lead to severe corrosive burns to the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach, potentially causing respiratory distress, cardiovascular collapse, central nervous system depression, and even death. If concentrated liquid contacts the eyes, severe irritation may occur.

Is Dettol Antiseptic Liquid safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Dettol Antiseptic Liquid can generally be used during pregnancy for external purposes, as systemic exposure from topical chloroxylenol use is considered negligible. However, some sources advise that it is contraindicated in pregnancy unless under a doctor's supervision.

For breastfeeding, it is unknown whether chloroxylenol or its metabolites are excreted in human milk, and a risk to newborns/infants cannot be excluded. Therefore, application of the product to the breast is not recommended during breastfeeding. If used in bath water, ensure thorough rinsing to avoid residue contact with the baby.

What precautions should be taken?

  • Dettol Antiseptic Liquid is for external use only and must never be swallowed.
  • Always dilute the product according to instructions before applying to the skin. Do not use it undiluted.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, ears, nose, or mouth. In case of contact, wash thoroughly with cold water and seek medical advice immediately.
  • Keep the product out of reach and sight of children and pets.
  • Do not use Dettol Antiseptic Liquid on eczematous skin conditions or on large areas of the body or sensitive skin.
  • It is not recommended for use in children under 1 year of age (or under 9 months for bathing, unless medically advised).
  • If accidentally swallowed, rinse the mouth and drink plenty of water or milk, then seek immediate medical attention. Do NOT induce vomiting.
  • Do not mix Dettol with detergents or other chemicals.
  • Avoid repeated application, as it may lead to hypersensitivity.

How should Dettol Antiseptic Liquid be stored?

Store Dettol Antiseptic Liquid in its original container, protected from direct sunlight, in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated area, below 25°C or 30°C. Keep the container tightly closed and sealed. Always keep it out of reach of children. Any diluted solutions should be discarded after use.
