Description
CORABRAD 5 by MANKIND PHARMA LTD
CORABRAD 5 mg Tablet is a medication prescribed for various heart conditions, primarily to manage heart rate and improve cardiac function. It is manufactured by Mankind Pharma Ltd..
Composition
- Active Ingredient: Ivabradine 5 mg.
Uses CORABRAD 5 is used to treat:
- Symptomatic Stable Angina Pectoris (Chest Pain): It is used in adult patients who are intolerant to or cannot take beta-blockers, or when beta-blockers alone do not adequately control symptoms, especially if the heart rate is equal to or above 70 beats per minute. It works by reducing the heart's oxygen demand, thereby decreasing the number of angina attacks and alleviating chest pain.
- Chronic Heart Failure: It is used in adult patients with chronic heart failure, particularly when the heart rate is equal to or exceeds 75 beats per minute, either in combination with beta-blockers or as an alternative when beta-blockers are unsuitable. It slows the heart rate, allowing the heart to pump more blood efficiently and reducing the risk of hospitalization due to worsening heart failure.
Dosage and Administration The typical starting dosage for adults is 5 mg twice daily, to be taken with meals. Depending on the patient's response and condition, the dosage may be increased to a maximum of 7.5 mg twice daily. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not crushed or chewed. It is recommended to take the medicine at the same time each day to maintain consistency. Treatment for angina or heart failure is often lifelong, and discontinuation should only be done under medical supervision.
Side Effects Common side effects may include:
- Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
- Luminous phenomena (temporary brightness, flashes of light, or blurred vision, especially with sudden changes in light intensity)
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea
- High blood pressure More serious, though less common, side effects can include irregular or rapid heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) and fainting, which may require urgent medical attention.
Precautions
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: CORABRAD 5 is not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby, and effective birth control measures should be used by women of childbearing potential. It is also not recommended for use during breastfeeding.
- Contraindications: Do not take CORABRAD 5 if you are allergic to ivabradine or any of its components, have very low blood pressure, certain heart conditions (such as sick sinus syndrome, sinoatrial block, 3rd-degree atrioventricular block, severe heart failure, or heart rhythm disorders), or severe liver disease.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, moderate liver disease, chronic eye retinal disease, recent stroke, or a pacemaker. Caution is advised in elderly patients over 65 years of age.
- Driving and Operating Machinery: As CORABRAD 5 may cause dizziness or visual disturbances, including temporary blindness due to sudden changes in light intensity, caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including herbal supplements. Concomitant use with certain antifungal medications (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole), antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin), HIV medications (e.g., ritonavir), antidepressants (e.g., nefazodone), and certain heart medications (e.g., diltiazem, verapamil, quinidine, amiodarone, beta-blockers) is not recommended or requires caution.
- Food Interactions: Avoid drinking grapefruit juice as it may alter the effect of the medicine.
- Overdose: An overdose may lead to a very slow heart rate, dizziness, excessive tiredness, and lack of energy, requiring immediate medical attention.
Storage Store CORABRAD 5 tablets in a cool and dry place, protected from sunlight, moisture, and heat. The storage temperature should not exceed 30°C. Keep the medicine out of sight and reach of children and pets.
Frequently asked questions
Here are some frequently asked questions about CORABRAD 5 by MANKIND PHARMA LTD:
What is CORABRAD 5 used for?
CORABRAD 5, which contains the active ingredient Ivabradine, is primarily used to treat chronic heart failure and symptomatic stable angina pectoris (chest pain) in adults. It helps to lower the risk of hospitalization for worsening heart failure. For angina, it is typically recommended for individuals with a heart rate of 70 beats per minute or higher who cannot take beta-blockers. In chronic heart failure, it's used alongside standard therapy for patients with a heart rate of 75 beats per minute or above.
How does CORABRAD 5 work?
CORABRAD 5 works by selectively inhibiting the "funny" channel pacemaker current (If) in the heart's sinoatrial (SA) node. This action reduces the heart rate by a few beats per minute, which in turn decreases the heart's workload and oxygen demand. By slowing the heart rate, it allows more time for blood to flow to the heart muscle, helping to alleviate angina symptoms and improve heart function in patients with heart failure.
What is the usual dosage of CORABRAD 5?
For adults, the usual starting dose of CORABRAD 5 is 5 mg taken twice daily with food. After two weeks, your doctor may adjust the dose to achieve a resting heart rate between 50 and 60 beats per minute, based on how well you tolerate the medication. The maximum recommended dose is 7.5 mg twice daily. In some cases, for patients with a history of conduction defects or where bradycardia (slow heartbeat) could lead to complications, a lower initial dose of 2.5 mg twice daily might be prescribed.
What are the possible side effects of CORABRAD 5?
Common side effects of CORABRAD 5 may include a slow heartbeat (bradycardia), temporary visual disturbances such as seeing bright spots or halos around lights (luminous phenomena or phosphenes), headache, dizziness, and blurred vision. Other less common side effects can include an irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation), increased blood pressure, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. If you experience severe bradycardia symptoms like excessive tiredness, confusion, or trouble breathing, or signs of an allergic reaction (rash, swelling of the face/lips/tongue), seek immediate medical attention.
Is CORABRAD 5 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
CORABRAD 5 is generally not recommended during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown potential risks to the fetus, including embryo-fetal toxicity and teratogenicity. Females who are able to become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, inform your doctor immediately.
For breastfeeding, CORABRAD 5 is also not recommended. While there is no definitive data on its presence in human milk, animal studies indicate that ivabradine is present in rat milk, suggesting a potential risk to breastfed infants. Your doctor will weigh the potential benefits against the risks before advising on its use during breastfeeding.
Can CORABRAD 5 be taken with other medications?
CORABRAD 5 can interact with several other medications, which may increase the risk of side effects like bradycardia or conduction disturbances. It should not be taken with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, such as certain antifungal medicines (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole), some antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, telithromycin), HIV/AIDS medications (e.g., nelfinavir, ritonavir), and some antidepressants (e.g., nefazodone). Co-administration with calcium channel blockers like diltiazem or verapamil should also be avoided. Additionally, caution is advised when taking it with other drugs that slow the heart rate, such as digoxin, amiodarone, or beta-blockers. Always inform your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, and supplement products you are taking.
What precautions should be taken while taking CORABRAD 5?
Before taking CORABRAD 5, inform your doctor if you have certain heart conditions like sick sinus syndrome, sinoatrial block, third-degree AV block without a pacemaker, very low blood pressure (hypotension), decompensated heart failure, or severe liver disease, as CORABRAD 5 might be contraindicated in these situations. Use caution if you have moderate liver disease, other heart rhythm problems (like atrial fibrillation), or a pacemaker. You may experience temporary vision changes, particularly with sudden changes in light, so be careful when driving or operating machinery, especially at night.
What happens if a dose of CORABRAD 5 is missed?
If you miss a dose of CORABRAD 5, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. If you vomit or spit out a dose, do not take another dose; simply continue with your next scheduled dose.
How should CORABRAD 5 be stored?
CORABRAD 5 tablets and oral solution should be stored at room temperature, typically between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Do not freeze the medication. Discard any unused oral solution as it is sterile and preservative-free. Do not keep outdated medicine or medicine no longer needed.
